60% of the time, it works every time
I was excited to get this product to use when car camping to get the fire going quick. It does that very very very well when it is in the mood. It has a tendency to blow itself out sometimes. After searching online it seems this was something that happened with the previous version without the handle as well. Usually the blowouts only happen when i try to tip the unit forward or upside down. If i leave it sit on the ground and hold some kindling in front of the flame it turns into a blaze quite well with no blow outs in that position so far. I have not used it in lower elevation yet so that may help eliminate blow outs some by having more oxygen.
Snowpeak Gigatorch and Lysol carry case
I've used the Gigatorch now twice, once with the butane adaptor and both times it's worked flawlessly, even upside down when windy. Thought I'd let you all know that the Gigatorch fits perfectly inside the smaller 35 sheet Lysol wipes container, you just have to squeeze the opening to get it in and out
Mini Flamethrower
Does anyone really NEED a torch like this to start a campfire? absolutely not. Does it make the process of doing so more efficient? 100%. Puts out a MONSTER flame and sounds like a jet. Like others have mentioned, it does have a habit of blowing out if you turn it up all the way but with a product such as this exercising some restraint isn't a bad idea.
needs improvements
this torch can be fun to use...under the right conditions. if you angle it pointing down the closer you get to being perpendicular to ground the more likely the flame will go out. Event about at about 45 degrees from the ground, the flame struggles to stay on. So if you have a bbq or fire pit with high walls, this torch will struggle. It really feels like it goes through the gas canister way too quickly. Substantial breezes also affect. So if you're trying to light a fire at night, in the wilderness, you may gas really quick and deal with flame going out.
Sounds like a jet engine!
Got to use this for the first time camping. The fire started in about 20 seconds. Rained all night and it was cold. Got the fire going in the morning with wet wood with no problems. Flame does blow itself out if turned up too high. Once you get the hang of the seat spot, it's no trouble. This is a great tool for starting campfires. Sounds like a jet engine when you light it up. lol
From Creme Brulee to Camp Fires
This thing is a beast. I've owned it for over a year now and have used it 30 or so times. I've used it for wood working, lighting camp fires, and even creme brulee. I'm a big fan of it folding up to make it more compact for storage. My only complaint is the accompanying bag, as it feels rather cheap. However, there's enough space to throw a lighter in there as well. All in all, quite a versatile tool!
Great for damp conditions
I've used this several times so far, the last time conditions were damp. This was able to ignite & dry out enough little stuff to start a fire for drying out larger pieces. It does use a lot of fuel, but that's apparent when you see (and hear) the flame. It sounds like a genuine blow torch. But even with regular cooking over a couple nights, a large MSR tank lasted with gas to spare. My only gripe is that once in a while, when pointing it down, the flame will go out. It wouldn't be a problem if they hadn't over-promised by saying it works upsidedown. Also, an ignition click would be cool. I bought this with an ulterior motive of heating up my uhh, "essential oil burner" I take on the trail. Unfortunately, the flame is not so controllable or concentrated for that (I found my stove works great for that). Fortunately, it's the best firestarter for when it's wet, or you're in a hurry to get a fire going. I'd have to say this is my favorite thing I've splurged on in my pack RN.
I was hoping for more
This is a very well made product and it should be for the size. My problem with it is that it very easily floods and extinguishes itself if not held pretty much upright, so when trying to light a fire etc it becomes a bit of a mixed bag to keep it upright. I would probably opt for a cheaper torch that fits on a normal map bottle from the hardware store next time. I am a big fan of Snow Peak but this one needs a bit more work.
pizza time!
If pizza is life this will complete your camping pizza needs (if you've got the weight and space to spare... but again, only if pizza is life ;)). It was a hit at the campground for pizza night! While it's main purpose is to start fires fast, I'd rather use the fuel for something more important... PIZZA! (First test video below)
Giga Torch
Very useful torch for your outdoor needs, compact and eelagent design. Only con, no self igniter.
