Could be better
For starters I thought this was going to help reduce smoke from the fire, based on snowpeak marketing, but it doesn’t actually accomplish that. There is still a lot of smoke going every direction and this doesn’t reduce it or help it in any way. What this does accomplish and it does it very well is #1. It burns hotter faster. We were able to burn through 2 large wood rounds in 2 hours which normally would have taken well over 3-4 hours or longer. #2. It emits heat farther away from the fire pit HOWEVER you have to be standing to get the full benefit because adding this reduces any lower body warmth to the legs while sitting next to the fire. #3. It adds height to the fire pit which allows for higher wood stacking or use of larger pieces, but they are going to burn very quickly so this really isn’t ideal when camping unless you want a quick short lived fire or have an extra trailer of fire wood. Space is extremely limited for us When Over landing and we are constrained to only being able to carry 3 bundles of wood without a hitch carrier… even with a hitch carrier I can’t imagine being able to bring nearly enough wood to feed this beast. This is great for our back yard use or if you enjoy being in developed camp sites where you can buy wood from the camp host. What could be different or better.. well there are two design improvements that could be made. The first thing I noticed which is such a small detail is that the side walls attach by these flanges that face down. If these were to have been faced upward then the entire unit could easily be lifted and carried as one piece as they would lock together. Currently if you lift up on the pieces they detach and come apart. Lastly the carrying bag is decent but could be better. It does not come with suitable carrying handles. The bag comes with this thin pseudo para cord cinching strap for closing the top of the bag but no way to carry it. So I added my own straps but honestly the straps should go all the way around the bottom for full support like in the upgraded $60.00 bag that snow peak sells for this. Adding full straps to this bag just was not an option without completely taking the back apart and then sewing it all back together again. I definitely recommend taking advantage of the 20% members discounts and dividend if you really want to buy this.
upgrade: more wood, brighter fires and less smoke
pros: The floga attachment is extremely heavy and durable. It does produce secondary combustion- less smoke in your face and turns those vapors into bright yellow flames. Because it's so strong, you can use more wood to make a bigger fire. A nice bonus is you don't need to poke the fire much since it has improved airflow. Takes barely a minute to set up on the ground and then place atop the takibi. It's very versatile. Go from charcoal grilling to a bonfire in no time. cons: It makes the takibi much less warm to sit next to if you make a small fire, the walls are shielding your face from the smoke but also your knees from the warmth. Again, it is extremely heavy due to its robust stainless steel construction.
necessity for the Takibi fire pit.
Works amazing! It gets secondary combustion easily resulting in very little smoke. I'm replacing my Solo stove with this unit. It also packs a lot smaller then the Solo stove. Snow peak is made a lot better then anything else on the market.
