Sizing Notes

For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

As advertised

Good 3 season boot. After a little break-in I just wore these on an October 14er climb in CO. On the approach one boot went through the ice on a stream crossing but my foot stayed dry. The climb was chilly (high 20s/low 30s with a very strong wind) and had light snow. Again, my feet stayed dry and warm with just a medium wool sock and no gaiters. Traction was good on the packed snow before I put spikes on. They're comfortable for mountaineering boots and very light compared to my four season boots. Not suitable for winter but good for everything else.

Just Okay

This review is based on some what of a first impression. I have used these boots on several winter hikes and half an ice season so far. Water proofing seems to be fine and I don't see any problem with the durability so far. I haven't noticed much flex in these boots at all so you definitely can use them on steep ice. They work well with crampons so no issue there. My only complaint is that the fit is very strange. I wear a size 42 and they are extremely tight in the toes even with normal socks. This makes my toes freeze very quickly. On hikes and long approach or even belaying I usually loosen the laces to give more blood flow and when ready to climb ill tighten them back up. I have used them in sub zero temps on one day climbs and made do however not quite sure how they would do on multi-day climbs. But for the price I guess they are fine. If you don't want expensive boots id go with these.

The Perfect "Kili" Boots!

When I decided to climb Kilimanjaro in 2018, I was provided a gear list by my guide company suggesting that I purchase a light to mid-weight hiking boot (I emailed them for clarity). What they said was that taking into consideration all the various climate zones that we would encounter over 12-days on the Lemosho route, I was going to need a boot that was versatile enough to keep me dry in the rain forest, comfortable enough to wear on long days, yet technical enough for some light scrambling and class 3 climbing. It also had to be warm enough for a cold, O’ dark-thirty summit morning (they also suggested bringing crampons just in case). I already owned the La Sportiva’s Nucleo High GTX hiking boots in a size 46. They are a lightweight, Gore-Tex boot that is very breathable and extremely comfortable while hiking, scrambling, etc. But I gave into my concern about them possibly not being warm enough for the higher altitudes and summit morning and purchased the Trango Tower GTX in a size 46 to be on the safe side (I normally wear a size 11.5 in my running shoes but was given great advise to size up to account for thicker socks, feet swelling at altitude, and to minimize banging my toenails on the decent and possibly losing them). In addition, I’m not a big fan of strap-on crampons that I’d have to use anyway. Fortunately, I was able to break the Trango’s in on a number of hikes, to include some scrambling, prior to departing (highly recommend using Superfeet inserts). I really liked the dual-lacing zones that allows me to adjust the ankle section depending on the terrain. Because they have a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, my feet stayed dry in the rain forest and for the rest of the trip. With the Vibram soles, I found these to be very durable, abrasion resistant, and they held up well and didn’t disappoint while scrambling up and ascending the 840’ Barranco Wall. Luckily I’d purchased the Grivel G-12 New Matic crampons because we had nearly 5-feet of new snow at the summit and needed to put on our crampons just below Stella Point (the hybrid G-12’s in combination with my Trango’s worked perfect). All in all, they did great. They held up well considering all the rain, scree, and road debris that we encountered over 12-days while climbing Kilimanjaro. Bottom line, this is a fantastic 3-season boot that is durable and lightweight enough to be extremely comfortable yet technical enough to get you where you need to go!

Fantastic on the rocks

I bought these boots to train and use for Mount Kilimanjaro. It took quite awhile to break them in but once broken in and taken on the trip, they did not disappoint. Most of Kilimanjaro is rocky terrain with slippery rocks and moderate climbing. We took the Machame Route and these boots were perfect for it. I was able to dance and climb around the rocks without poles. These boots stuck to everything and gave me an added sense of security my other team mates did not have. I ended up donating them to one of the guides after the climb. His own boots were quite tattered and he was quite thrilled with the gift. As for myself, I’ll be picking up a new pair to break in. I highly recommend these boots for rocky terrain that requires traction when you need it most. Enjoy the journey.

Comfortable and Technical!

Great hybrid between a hiking boot and a technical boot. Ideal for snow/glacier travel and easy ice, but I have used it both for long approaches and vertical ice without complaints. Comfortable enough for 22 miles of Mt. Whitney and technical enough to take on WI5 in the Michigan winter- not many boots can claim both! Semi-auto crampons are fast on and off and with some thick warm socks they have kept my toes warm down to around 0 F. Highly recommended, especially if you can find a deal on them!

over the South Patagonia Ice Field

Bought two pairs for my two sons for a 80 km trek over the South Patagonia Ice Field. Boots used on the ice with crampons, with snow shoes, and on trail to access and exit. Neither son had a chance to break them in. Boots performed perfectly, just right for the mixed terrain, they are as light as they could be for their purpose, but stiff enough for crampons, feet stayed dry, no blisters. As more than one reviewer noted sizes run small, get one size larger than your usual.

Simply Awesome

Just ordered these in case my 10+ year old pair give out before a big fly fishing trip into Wyoming wilderness this upcoming summer. Great job La Sportiva, they feel like they fit exactly like my old pair, minus a little break in, same size - 43 as my old pair and other La Sportiva boots. My current pair were awesome as my only shoe for a week other than wader boots, feet stayed warm, dry, cool, whatever the crazy weather doled out in July above 10,000 ft.

So far, So good

I have had these boots for about 6 months and worn probably 10 times on good 3-10 mile hikes in tough mountain country. They didn't have much break-in time which was nice. Seams holding up so far.

Get These!

Bought these boots because I REALLY needed a new pair before a trek to Gokyo Lakes in Nepal. It was a risk because of the short time frame. The boots were awesome!! Highly recommend.

Very comfortable, poor quality.

Initial fit of boots was amazing, but simply did not last. One week of heavy use off trail and wore through rand, boot, and sole.
