Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, dry, packs small, and high pitched voices Jacket works great. The quality of the design and construction is outstanding. The zipper is nice and tight. I keep it in my Osprey day pack for hiking but I've used it in a pinch on my motorcycle, separate times for warmth and rain. If it am work at 65 mph then it works at nybblazing 3 mph hiking pace. Packs down small. Super lightweight so doesn't add unnecessary weight to the pack. You should probably get it if you're reading this review. Only thing is it doesn't actually change the pitch of your voice. Unless you've summits the highest mountains and spent the night screaming at Mother Nature to throw her worst at you because you're so secure in your new jacket. Then your voice might change.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from water "resistant" is a stretch... I have always been impressed with OR product but this jacket was lacking. The outer shell is great... Lightweight and water proof. However, the water "resistant" arm and side fabric soaked through within a few minutes, leaving me wet, cold and shivery for two straight days. The only reason I am not leaving a 1-star review is because the construction is amazing, the weight is ultralight and the only weak point was the hybrid material under the arms/sides. I'll be returning this jacket to REI and will avoid anything "hybrid" from OR in the future. It might be just fine for a sprinkle, but definitely not a RAIN coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handsome heavenly highlight for my hike I wore this in August with only a silk base layer and a t-shirt underneath, and it kept me warm and windproof on the summit for about half an hour. On the way back down, the rain was enjoyable. Very breathable. No pit zips needed, since the ferrosi material on the sides is very breathable. I needed a new rain jacket, since I have lost 40 pounds since this time last year. I'm very happy with my choice. I am 6'0" and 175 pounds and the medium is the perfect fit! I would consider this style a "slim fit".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versitile ultralight shell Used this jacket for the about 500 miles of hikes, including the John Muir Trail, and it has held up very well. Some ultralight backpackers carry a frog toggs rain jacket (5.7oz measured), and a Patagonia Houdini wind shirt (4.4oz measured). I just carry a Helium hybrid (8.6oz measured). While the weight and space savings are nice, the really special thing about this jacket is that it is one of the few rain jackets you can use without getting wet from either rain or sweat. Since tye Pertex Shield+ fabric also has a weave too tight for wind or bugs to bite through, this makes a very versitile a comfortable shell that adds warmth, and protects against wind, rain, and bugs!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for I am hiking the AT and use this jacket for rain, wind and cold. It has held up well with my backpack riding on it for 1922.6 miles, there is no sign of wear on the shoulders and it still keeps the rain out. If look forward to using if for the final 265 miles of the AT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All hail the hybrid! Fantastic shell. I've always loved the helium, but as I burn hot I'm always melting in my shell. The addition of the soft shell sides blow off heat and I still stay dry. It's nice having a shell like this that folds up to the size of a sandwhich. I use it for hiking, belaying, alpine climbing, and bumming around town. Oh, and the black one looks sweet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rain jacket with a bit of stretch and breathabilit I've been wearing this in the extremely rainy New England this spring. I must admit, it's an upgrade over the regular Helium at keeping you drier on the inside. With well placed stretch panels under the arms, I no longer feel like I'm wearing a plastic bag! Good work on the update, OR - keeping the coat light but adding a nice feature

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Zipper handle pops off Main zipper handle popped off due to the zipper which has a "latch" keeping the handle secured. If the zipper jams or just doesn't move well as you are pulling on it, the latch unlocks. I tried popping it back, but it just comes off again when you try to unzip the jacket. Otherwise works good, but can't really recommend it fur this reason. Got this for an active-rainshell for cycling due to the breath-ability, worked well for the purpose the few times I used it, but the zipper design seems to eliminate any workable fix for this issue.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between this jacket and Outdoor Research Helium II Rain Jacket?

Asked by: jacob
The hybrid has a soft shell material under the arms and down the side. This provides more constant breathability than the Helium II. This material replaces the pit zips.
