Don't be fooled, this is a great unit.

I hesitated buying the Garmin 820 because of the poor reviews, but decided to go out on a limb and give it a try and I am so glad I did. This is a great GPS and works just as described by Garmin. The software update that happens within minutes of turning it on obviously fixed any glitches on the earlier models. It is very user friendly and intuitive. Don't expect the screen to react like your smart phone, the touch screen is a bit slower but understandably so. That way rain will not affect it. It easily paired with my phone and my Garmin Vivosmart HR + heart rate monitor. I own other hand held Garmin GPS units and once again they did a great job.

Poor Product, Don't Buy

I race road cat 4, MTB cat 2 and CX cat 2. I have had this product for 1-2 weeks and a few days ago the unit failed and I had to do a hard reset. When the Garmin 820 failed it would not stop rotating through all the screens and I couldn't stop this process. Again, the only way I could stop this was to do a hard reset mid-ride. I have also had problems turning it off. Powering down is a basic function that Garmin could not do correctly.

Disappointed

This is my first Garmin product and I am not impressed. I got the 820 because it was supposed to have good mapping...it does not. It feels like the same old tech they had on the automobile GPS units 10 - 15 years ago. The maps are too small to really see, I could not find any of the trails I ride, and the search feature is poor. The interface is clunky, the touch screen is not responsive at all, and no matter how many times I tried it would not connect and sync with my iPhone 7. If I cant get the touch screen to work well for me at my kitchen table how will it work on the trail? I am returning it. I will go back to using Trail Forks and Strava. Both are free and tell me everything I need to know.

The best of them all

The Edge 820 is the same size as the Edge 520 but the 820 is touch screen which makes navigating, especially while riding, much easier. It has a better maps set than the 520 so you can actually navigate based on the maps. This is smaller than the 1030 but you also save a lot and get many of the same great features. This also pairs great with Garmin's Varia lights which connect as sensors and can be controlled right from your head unit. The other nice part about this computer is that if you have Shimano's Di2 you can set buttons on the top of the break hoods to control many different things on your Garmin.

Everything I need, but could be more snappy

When it came out it was far from perfect but the latest firmware (5.2) makes it almost perfect for me. Now you can have a custom data page that pops up when you approach a Strava live segment. It used to be a map that popped up, which was weird cause you usually know the road when you're on one of your favorite segment. I find the interface very slow, I wish it was more snappy. Navigating through the map with the touch screen is a real pain.

Great device - Ok Touchscreen

Nice and small but packed with features. This device does almost everything I could imagine. The group tracking feature is awesome on long rides with your buddies (Who also have a compatible device). I would say this is one of the best features of the device. The bicycle specific navigation is pretty good but I rarely use it. To be honest - in most cases its easier and faster to grab my phone from my jersey and get directions from it. I wish Garmin allowed you to create a course or directions from your phone and then upload it to the 820. I believe there is a 3rd party app that allows you to do that. Last but not least - the touch screen. Garmin should have left the side buttons like on the 520. The touch screen is useful when using navigation and other stuff but is a royal pain to use while cycling. Give me real buttons! Garmin does make a remote for it but thats another gadget that I have to remove when I go in the store or commute to work. Also if you get dirt or water on the screen it can sometimes make the screen go crazy. There is a sensitivity setting that you can adjust if that happens. I put a glass screen protector on mine and haven't had any issues the touch screen going crazy and have ridden 1000+ miles in the rain with the 820. Is it perfect? No but its a really good bike computer. Give it a shot.

Extremely buggy.

Like many reviewers, I also had issues getting the unit to respond. I read one review that speculated the processor was too small for all the features and this caused the unit to routinely freeze. One of the largest frustrations was that the bluetooth to connect to your phone would very rarely work.

Great concept, another glitchy product

My fourth Garmin, first of this model. Every one I've owned seems to have issues. This one rotated through screens by itself, and I could not get it to stop. Also powers down for no reason. Returning it for a replacement.

40-mile battery life

Fully charged, I can navigate 40 miles before it says "entering battery save mode" and screen cuts off. Like clockwork. Even the Edge 1000 went 50 miles with a bigger screen. The Elemnt BOLT is much better in battery life and ease of use. I thought I would try another Garmin only because their navigation is superior. But 40 miles? Come on, Garmin. What good are the maps if the screen goes blank?

Really Enjoy It

Really the only issues I might have with the unit revolve around not having used it (or a previous model) before. Other than that, I love how small it is and the accuracy of it seemed to be on point.
