Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Wall or City night out! so versatile I have been using the Ascendant exclusively for city wear. The soft exterior just didn't seem right for the rugged outdoors. Alas I got caught in May in Yosemite with a little colder weather than predicted and I only had the Ascendant with me. I took it up on El Capitan for an overnight and expected that it would get shredded and be tossed,(or returned on the OR Infinite Guarantee). BOOM! I'm astounded it handled all manner of tossing and turning against granite and general scraping. Super impressed with this seemingly "dressy outer layer."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great piece! As the title says, this is a great piece! I am 5'11" 180 pounds and originally got a Medium which was a bit snug. Ended up with a large which fits well with a thin baselayer, under a shell, or on its own. The Polartec Alpha Direct is good stuff. Good warmth and breathability and superb neck feel. I am a sweater and haven't noticed the funky feeling described in other reviews.... perhaps I haven't got there yet. I've used this under a shell in just above freezing, rainy conditions while on a recent bikepacking trip and was comfortable while moving. At camp, added a puffy and was dialed. Excited to see how this handles winter rides and backcountry trips! Nice Job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it.....really. Don't think, just buy it! Heres the deal, when ski touring, walking around town or anything outdoors when its winter time I'm usually on the colder side of the fence. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this jacket out, great warmth to weight ratio without being a smaller puffy (down or synthetic) that I usually wear. Today was its first test on the skins, after a brief ceremony welcoming it into the collection the test was on and it excelled. It breathed well when I was working hard in the warmer temps, and once that frigid alpine wind kicked up it blocked out the bad, and kept in the good. I'm stoked on this mid-layer & I suggest you add it to your collection too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best light weight insulating jacket I own This jacket does it all. It has enough warmth for casual wear in moderate cold but it really shines on a chilly hike. Once you get moving, it breathes well in all the right places and the open knit polartec is quite warm. I work as a photographer and can go from urban areas to wilderness and through it all the durability of this jacket is exceptional. The hood is adjustable it fits nicely around hats and can be used with a helmet. I'm 5'9 and 220lbs and I bought an XL and it fits really well in the shoulders, arms and chest but is slightly loose in the stomach. Overall, this jacket is one of the best I own for its versitality and comfort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most Amazing Jacket EVER!!! Just took this "Hoody" on a three day trek across the Presidential Range in New Hampshire (Temps 0-30F, Wind 30-50 mph to 60-70 mph with wind gust close to triple digits). I wore ONE thin merino wool tee shirt underneath and that's it! I would add a down jacket over when we stopped to set camp. Otherwise, this is THE PERFECT LAYER! I brought a Gore-Tex jacket and it never left my bag. It's so light and just magical at regulating temps, keeping you dry, and blocking the wind! My comrades were adding and removing layers, including the Gore-Tex. This is all you need (if moving). If the temps were below zero I would add a quarter zip. Otherwise just AMAZING.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not kidding about "active insulation" Still trying to figure out whether I like this more as a layer or a jacket. Living in a climate where we regularly get all four seasons in a week's time, the versatility of the Ascendant is appreciated. The fleece inner lining is comfortable and warm but still manages to breath nicely when you start to move around. I've worn it as a layer paddling in freezing conditions and stayed warm, or as a jacket when cleaning brush and hiking late fall. The only downside is the outer material is not as durable as I'd like - I snagged a tree and poked a good hole - but that is the tradeoff with lightweight material. Got mine in "agate red" and the colour is rockin'.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, lightweight jacket This jacket is pretty great. Very warm and breathable. I am using it to replace my fleeces that I would take hiking as well as for a mid layer skiing. I'll probably even use it instead of a down jacket during the summer months when I don't necessarily need the extra warmth. This jacket performed very well while skiing as a mid layer. When I got too toasty I would simply unzip my shell and I cooled down to the perfect temperature. I can't wait to see how this performs while doing something a little more active and to see how long it lasts. Overall I am pretty happy with it. Great value with regards to warmth and weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this again Though I haven't put this jacket through its paces yet-that will have to wait until our east coast winter truly arrives-my early outings suggest this jacket is going to be one of my favorites. During modest exertion, it's kept me perfectly comfortable with only a t-shirt as an underlay. On a few truly windy days, I've been shocked by how wind proof it is. Time will tell about durability, though I must admit the light weight concerns me. I can imagine that some would prefer a slimmer fit but for my medium build, it has the right balance between length and the option to wear it as a an outer layer without flopping around or to comfortably take a warm outer layer over it.

Questions & Answers

Are the sleeves also lined with the "checker board" patterned fleece?

Asked by: Courious not George
The sleeves are lined with the same fabric that is on the body of the jacket beside the top half of the upper arm, which is the same ripstop nylon material on the outside of the jacket.

What is on the inside of the arms...fleece or a poly/smooth lining? Is it going to make the sleeves of the underlayer ride up when putting it on? That is what I am trying to determine. Thanks.

Asked by: SKVP
The sleeves on this jacket have fleece from approximately the elbow down to the wrist and polyester from the armpit to the elbow due to insulation placement.

My son is 6'4" and 150 lbs. (yeah, hoping he fills out).  He wears a 37/38 sleeve. What size would fit? He does layer.

Asked by: Momocello

How can I visually or otherwise tell the difference between gen1 and gen2 outer fabrics? I want to make sure I get gen 2. Thanks!

Asked by: flyguy
There is not really a gen 1 and gen 2. There was a revision part way through the production to increase breathability. This difference is not visible from the outside. We are only selling the revised version.

Does this have a slim or regular fit (I'm thinking about how Patagonia calls out their fit). Thank you.

Asked by: SteveE
This is in Outdoor Research's slim fit, which is more trim than their standard fit.
