It combines hardshell protection with light insulation, making it a convenient option for cold, wet conditions. Perfect for bike commuting, hiking, and casual winter wear. Not ultralight, but highly functional. First Impressions: I received the Echelon Ecoloft for free in exchange for an honest review. Initially, I was skeptical because I usually stick to a traditional layering system (shell + insulation + base). But after a couple of months of regular use, this jacket has earned a spot in my rotation. It's water- and windproof, lightly insulated, and versatile enough for town or trail. Fit & Comfort • My size varies between medium and large depending on the brand; the medium fits perfectly. • The soft polyester lining feels great against the skin-much nicer than the rough interior of most hardshells. • Microfiber-lined hand pockets add comfort, though I wish the collar had similar lining. • Layers easily over sweaters, fleeces, or thin puffers. • While the coat doesn't stretch, it moves well for moderate activity like 3-5-mile bike rides or hiking. • The hood fits over a bike helmet. Skiing would likely be fine, but I wouldn't choose this for climbing, running, or backpacking. Warmth & Insulation • Not ideal for warm weather, but excellent for a range of cold conditions thanks to room for layering. • Works as a single layer around 50-60°F and, with layers, down into the teens. • Synthetic insulation is evenly distributed and paired with a windproof shell that traps heat when zipped and cinched. Breathability & Moisture Management • Breathability is not a strong point. The design prioritizes heat retention over ventilation. • No pit zips-a missed opportunity for temperature regulation. • Materials: o Shell 1: 55% polyester / 45% recycled polyester o Shell 2: 100% recycled polyester o Liner: 100% recycled polyester • Hood and shoulders use a more durable fabric. Weather Resistance • Outstanding performance in rain, snow, sleet, and wind. Water beads and rolls off; wind doesn't penetrate. • Haven't tested in prolonged rain, so unsure about wet-out timing. • Adjustable toggles at hood, collar, and hem seal out the elements. Velcro cuffs prevent wind and rain from creeping up sleeves. • Note: Collar toggles are inside the jacket, requiring you to unzip to tighten the hood-not ideal in driving rain or wind. Packability & Travel • Not ultralight and doesn't pack into itself. Weighs 31.1 oz on my scale. • Wouldn't be my first choice for trips where space and weight matter, such as backpacking. Durability & Construction • Solid build quality. After two months of use, no signs of wear. • Insulation stays in place; zippers work smoothly. Design & Usability • Two zippered hand pockets, one chest pocket, one sleeve pocket, and two large inner mesh pockets. • Color: Navy blue (my version). Classic look-not overly technical, so great for around town. Pros: • Excellent weatherproofing • Comfortable lining and good fit • Versatile for commuting, hiking, and casual wear Cons: • No pit zips (limited breathability) • Collar toggles inside jacket • Not ultralight or highly packable Overall Performance: The Echelon Ecoloft surprised me. It's not as technical as what I normally wear - Rab Neutrino for extreme cold or an Arcteryx shell setup for wet and cold, but that's okay. It fills a different niche. For moderate cold and wet conditions, it's a stylish, functional option that simplifies layering. If you want one jacket that handles winter weather without looking overly technical, this is worth considering. Recommendation: Yes, I'd recommend it for outdoor enthusiasts who value convenience and versatility.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I will start by saying the Outdoor Research sent me this jacket for free in turn for an honest review. I have tested gear in the PNW for the last 3 years. When I first received this product from OR, I was skeptical. My first impression was that I thought it seemed heavy, stiff and had no ventilation. In the PNW I am used to layering for my outdoor adventures and was curious as to how this jacket would fit in. Here is my honest review of the Men's Echelon Ecoloft Jacket Fit: I run a medium in almost all jackets. I am 5'9 and 165lbs. This jacket fit me very well. Sleeves are a perfect length and work with gloves while the tail of the jacket dips just low enough to cover the backside while biking. The jacket did not feel baggy or bulky. I like the velcro on the cuffs and the ability to tighten the hood. Very few adjustments were needed to make this jacket fit just right. Warmth: This jacket is warm! It has turned into my go to winter coat I love not having to throw on multiple layers to go outside. I walk my kids to school every day and found this coat to be great (with no layers) in temps from 20-45 degrees. On very cold days I would throw on a light sweatshirt and be very comfortable. The warmth is evenly distributed and I did not find any cold spots within the jacket. The hood and collar ride high and really protect your head and face from the elements. Breathability: Ventilation is not this jackets strong suit. I overheated in the jacket when doing strenuous activities like biking or hiking. It does not have any ventilation zippers and must be unzipped to let out heat. However, it was my go to jacket for shoveling snow, sledding or for laps at the pump track. This jacket performed well for intermittent workouts in cold weather and was excellent for any periods of standing still in the cold. Mobility: My first impression was that this jacket was very stiff. I did not think it was going to have great mobility. After 1 week of wearing the jacket, it really loosened up. All of the initial stiffness is gone and I find it very comfortable. It has stretch fabric on the inside of the coat in the armpits and running down each side. Though not as mobile as a puffy coat or soft-shell, this jacket has surprisingly good mobility for its durability. Packability: The jacket does not fold into a pocket, and is not very easy to fit into a backpack. I would most likely not bring this on an airplane. I commute to work and I always keep this jacket in my car. I drive over a mountain pass and if I breakdown in the cold, this is the jacket I want to have on me. We have a cabin up in the mountains, I always bring the jacket with me for our 3-4 day get aways. Durability: This is where this jacket shines. It's durable and water resistant shell provide comfort in all weather. I have worn this in the snow, heavy rain and heavy winds (sometimes all 3 at the same time). At no point was this jacket not up to the elements. I have worn it bushwhacking in the PNW and after 3 months of heavy use, it is still in amazing condition. The durability is my favorite part of this jacket. Design and usability: I was sent this coat with no information and had no prior reviews to go off of. It is a brand new jacket to the OR lineup. After all of my testing, I have found that this is the winter coat that I didn't know I needed. I love the design, the color, pocket placement and fit. My wife thought it was very stylish and I like to wear it around town. Not having to bring layers everywhere is a really nice change of pace when you live in Washington State. I like how it fits well with gloves and how the hood and collar protect from the elements. Overall performance: Once I figured out how this jacket fit in my lifestyle, it has become one of my favorite pieces of clothing. It has been very fun testing this jacket. This isn't a jacket I would recommend for climbing, hiking, mountain biking or skiing. This is a jacket I would recommend for everything else. A bombproof, stylish and warm winter coat for every day use in the PNW or anywhere you need to be warm and dry in cold weather. I strongly feel that this jacket will last a long time while standing up to everything I throw at it.
