It used to be mine....
I bought this pack for myself a couple years ago. My wife liked it so she kept it. She doesn't use it as often as I would but since I carry everything, I got myself the fourteener 24. The mule carries what my wife needs: water and snacks, a jacket just in case, and other small items that she could use. I do wish I should've bought it in another color since she made it hers.
They removed the reserrvoir hook shelf
My wife has the 2019 luxe and it felt really comfortable on the back, so I decided to buy myself the mule. They're essentially the same pack but the mule holds 2 more liters of gear I just received this a few days ago and after going to fill the reservoir for the first time I noticed the reservoir was held in by a small loop wrapping around the flimsy hooks on the top of the reservoir. They removed the slot for the large hook that is on all their reservoirs. Why? This makes removing and reinserting the reservoir so much more difficult and a 2 hand process, I have to rest the bag on something then use both hands to remove that loop. I fill my bag from my fridges water spout that has purified water. I cannot keep the reservoir in the pack and fill it from this location so I have to remove the reservoir every time. What makes things worse is that these hooks that the loop goes around are very thin and flimsy, I definitely see these breaking off. This is a lazy design and makes the bag feel cheaper. My wifes luxe has the hook slot but not the 2020 mule? Other than this gripe, I like the but the main function of this has become so much more of a pain.
4.5 Stars
This is my first Camelbak product. I bought it to use as day pack for hiking in the Arizona heat. This held the 3L water reservoir, as well a 2L reservoir, and some extra equipment/snacks. Obviously holds even more without the extra 2L. The pockets for organization were great since this was also used as my carry-on on the plane. There are a couple things I don't like about the bag. The side release buckles get caught and don't always buckle properly, and the hook on the inside for the reservoir is probably not the best design they could have used. These aren't major issues, but enough to keep this from getting 5 stars.
Camelbak Mule
Great Pack with lots of extra room and suprises from the 2014 one I had.
Great for festivals
I bought this while it was on sale a day before a music festival that I've been attending for the last 5 years. Totally purchased on a whim, but wow was I satisfied! Never knew how thirsty I actually was until water was readily accessible at a moments notice! Also, this model has several very handy pockets and straps! With the straps, I didn't even think that I had a few liters strapped to my back! I love it, it's perfect, so do yourself a favor and grab one!
Not as good as my old M.U.Le
I just replace an old M.U.L.E because my new Note8 cellphone did not fit in the phone pocket. The new one is missing some features like a waterproof zipper on the phone pocket with a headset cord hole, no key hook, fewer interior pockets, and no bladder hook which would allow older bladders to be used. Disappointed but. . .
Great design and a great fit....however.
I’m definitely a Camelback fan I’ve owned three Camelback mules. The first two are still in use by my two children. This one however is wearing prematurely. The mesh backing is wearing on my waist band. A little design change and this Mule would be lasting for years longer.
2017 CamelBak M.U.L.E
I have owned and used CamelBak hydration packs since they first came out and they are the best, I am writing this review in regards to 2017 M.U.L.E which in my opinion is a bad redesign, the smaller tool storage pocket cannot be readily accessed till first unbuckling the overflow storage compartment , the magnetic clip for the drinking tube is a good idea but is limited to one side only and just happens to be the opposite side I have used for years. Returned 2017 model and ordered last years.
A far cry from the original mule
Not at all happy with this. Just purchased 3 weeks ago and not at all impressed. I’ve used the original mule for 15 years (loved it) and wanted a new one and this has fallen way short of expectations. The “ergonomic” bladder is a huge step back from the quarter turn lock bladder. Very hard to screw on and get a good seal. In fact, I got it stuck and broke the cap trying to remove it. It also won’t allow you to fill the bladder full as they’ve reduced the size of the pack so much that it forces the water back to the top, and there’s no way to hold the bladder in place like the previous mule. The pack rides up too high on your back and makes it uncomfortable. I would absolutely not recommend purchasing this pack.
Better than the old version - some small gripes
This is my second MULE after using the old version for 6 years. I like the new version - seems to have more storage space and is more streamlined on my back - doesn't stick out as much as the old version. I bought this for hiking, camping, day trips, and music festivals and it performs great for all of those things. Onto things I think could be improved...the way the reservoir fits is awkward. The handle has a small loop to hold it in place and it's difficult sometimes to put the reservoir with water back it - the tube gets twisted and is more difficult than the old version. The mouth piece is at an awkward angle - I wish it was still at a 90 degree angle. I'm just being fussy - this model is great. I plan on using this for the next few years.
