Rated 5 out of 5 by from State of the Art Winter Shoe I purchased the Merrell Coldpack Ice+ Moc Waterproof several weeks ago for casual winter wear in Colorado. These slip-ons combine a waterproof membrane, a fleece lining and most importantly, the new Vibram Artic Grip sole. If you’re looking for slip-on shoes that will keep your feet dry, warm and planted on the ground, there is nothing better. Period. In addition to daily wear at home, I wore these shoes to Breckenridge for a ski trip. Changing into and out of ski boots in an icy parking lot is a great test of a shoe’s traction on ice and the Merrell Coldpack performed superbly. Later after skiing, I put the Merrells back on and walked around on icy steps and on the edge of a groomed ski slope near the lift. These shoes are excellent in snow and excellent on ice. The Artic Grip sole performs a lot like a Blizzak dedicated snow tire. It stays soft at freezing temperatures and has extra bite that makes moving on snow and ice significantly less treacherous. This sole is a game changing technology and is the future of winter shoes. There are some things you should know before buying these. The shoes are made more narrow than most others and have a tight toe box. I have a narrow foot and I still had to buy a half-size larger than I normally wear to get a good fit. You could say that these run a half-size small. Also, the arch support is noticeably higher than other outdoor shoes. My foot has a high arch so this worked fine after getting used to it, but it might not for someone with a lower arch. The inner footbed is easily removable so you could find one with a lower arch and replace it. Overall, I would try these shoes on in the store before buying them. Also, be aware that the fleece insulation does work. Outside on the snow, my feet were comfortable and slightly cool (these aren’t Sorel boots with a half inch of insulation). Coming inside these shoes become like insulated house shoes. Combined with socks, your feet may become extra warm in a room temperature environment. But that’s what these shoes are designed to do. I either take them off inside or accept very warm feet. Merrell does sell other less expensive slip-ons with the Artic Grip soles. The Jungle Moc Ice+ has the high-grip sole without the waterproof lining. The Jungle Moc Ice+ also does not have the rubber toe wrap-around that the Coldpack does and the Jungle Moc is suede where the Coldpack is full grain leather. You may prefer the look of the Jungle Moc and it is $30 cheaper, but my experience is that the rubber wrap-around provides years of longer life in leather outdoor shoes. I also hate how poor suede looks after exposure to muddy water. For me the Coldpack Moc is the perfect shoe. In all I would say that these are the best shoes you can buy for wear around the ski slopes, walking your dog in the winter or wearing out for errands on a snowy day. Very highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sole, grip and extra warmth for winter. I bought them on sale and considering to buy another pair. My husband loves them. The size 12 in a jungle moc was slightly snug with his thick socks, so I bought these in a 13 and it is a perfect fit. Excellent grip for the frosty winters. His top shoe preference is the Merrell Jungle Moc and this fits the bill. The only negative in this brand is that sizing is not consistent. It's sort of the luck of the draw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good basic work shoe! I buy Mocs about twice a year to wear at work on construction sites (I'm a project manager) and these go well with business casual, and clean up pretty well over and over. This is my first try with this type, but so far, so good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with purchase These were on clearance. I bought them mainly because they are waterproof and my Mocs always get dirty. So far, I'm glad I did and hope the style is available when these need replacing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Another disappointed owner This is the second pair of Merrells I have had the same problem with. I first had a pair of Moabs that squeaked when walking, even on carpet. I took them back and upgraded to the coldpack Ice. I have had these about 3mo and now these started squeaking. I like the shoe but I can't have them squeak when I walk. Disappointed Merrell can't fix this problem. Happy with REI's customer service about this though, except now they no longer carry this shoe. I hate to return them but have no choice in the matter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs As Advertised Needed to replace a prior pair of Merrell's shoes, very similar and about 5 years old. This shoe more than did the trick. Comfortable. Wears dry and well in both rain and light snow. Feels durable and promises to be so. A definite winner.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fell apart I bought these shoes in late October. The black reinforcement separated from the shoe and completely shredded after 1-1/2 months. There is an open hole to my foot. I am going to try to get a full refund or replacement when I am near an REI. Unfortunately, I do not live near one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works very well for me I bought this a couple of months ago. I'm a big fan of Merrell's; so, I'm not surprised that I'm very pleased. They fit well, have excellent traction, and slip on and off easily (great for air travel). Too early to give any long-term follow-up but great so far.

Because these shoes stop at the ankle, what's stopping snow from getting in all the time? Surely your socks must get soaked and water drips down?

Asked by: Peter
It is possible for snow to fall into these shoes. We recommend gaiters if you plan on using these shoes in deep snow.

Some reviews indicate that the men's Merrell Coldpack Ice+ Winter Shoes run a 1/2 size small, & have a narrow fit, and therefore, one should buy it in a 1/2 size larger.  Can REI confirm this?  Also, does this shoe have a higher than normal arch support?

Asked by: 3sport
Based on reviews, this shoe does tend to run narrow. These shoes do have arch support but are not categorized as higher than normal.

I live in new Jersey. I work outside are these boots for walking on concrete.

Asked by: Ivsky
These shoes excel in wet, snowy, and icy conditions. They can certainly be used to walk on concrete, but they are designed for the winter conditions described above.

I see buying a half size up has been recommended. My husband tried on the Merrell Jungle Moc in the store and found that 12 fit well. Should he order 12.5 in the Coldpack, or is the fit the same between the Jungle Moc and Coldpack?

Asked by: Lois
We recommend ordering the size of what you find comfortable in Merrell shoes.
