Purchased this jacket less than a year ago. For all intended purposes this jacket performed amazingly. Water beaded, Kept me dry and well insulated with support from other base layers. Sleeves fit a bit long and neck trim is a bit tight making it tough to zip up all the way with a sweater of some sort underneath. Unfortunately I can't speak highly towards the durability as I got a rip in the jacket whilst hiking (Likely caught on tree or rock), which is what the intended purpose of the Zeta AR is and again haven't even owned the jacket longer than a year. Expected a bit more from a jacket as expensive as this and from a company with Arc'teryx's reputation.
I was so hoping to buy this jacket. I wanted the version with the "Ember" colour from 2018 but that one was sold out. Was looking forward to the 2019 release but sadly it is only available in dark colours. I need to have a high visible colour for hiking/photography particularly in the fall. I've had one close encounter with a hunter and need high visible colour jacket to avoid an accident. Surprised Arcteryx doesn't recognise the benefits of having high visible fabric choices for safety reasons while hiking/trekking in the wilderness. No other jacket in the Arcteryx line has the right length for a person with a long torso. i.e. at least 80cm in length.
I assume Arc'teryx discontinued this line,as it is difficult to find anywhere. It's a shame because it fills a niche between hardcore outdoor activities and casual wear.It fits on the athletic side, and is much more quieter than the Beta AR or Alpha Leaf. I don't really care about the hood not being helmet compatible as I don't wear a helmet to work or when hiking.
Would be a 5 star perfect jacket if it was a regular fit and the Hem was wider. Anything more than an ultra light down won't fit underneath it without compressing the down and making for an uncomfortable fit and the Hem is so narrow it constricts moving if you have to take large steps. The trim fit makes for a better looking jacket when you're not layering but I think I'd prefer more space for layering. And the narrow Hem on such a long jacket is an oversight in my opinion Otherwise it's a great piece. I may sell mine and trade up to a burlier but also looser fitting beta sv. I prefer the higher denier face fabrics since in my experience they retain DWR better.
This thing is perfect for anybody that is tall and needs a lightweight, bombproof shell for hiking and trekking. At 6'6, 195lbs this jacket runs past my waist and even further at the back with the drop tail. Arms are perfect length as well. I took this thing out on a multi night backcountry snowshoe trip and it held up to sleet, snow and heavy winds without any issue. I felt invincible in this thing. The C-knit made the jacket feel much lighter, quieter and softer than the goretex pro shells. I really liked having pit zips to dump excess heat and the front pockets are perfectly placed to allow a backpack hipbelt. Only con is the sticker shock but that goes for almost anything Arc'teryx. Could not be happier with this purchase and look forward to testing it out more in every condition we get in BC.
I am 5'9" with a 37 inch chest and 32 inch waist. The small fits well and there is just enough room for a down sweater. I wear a 32inch shirt sleeve and the sleeves cover half of my hand with arms at my side. The sleeve can be cinched to stay back but backpacking in cool or rainy weather my hands can be fully inside the sleeve. It is light and appears as breathable as my old REI EVent Jacket (wish they had an accurate/agreed upon standard for jacket breathability like the EN rating for bags). I believe pit zips are essential since no current jacket is perfect in handing moisture and body heat. Hood works well in rain.Materials and construction are top notch as expected.
The Zeta AR is the perfect bad weather or cool/cold season shell for pursuits where a helmet is not required. This jacket does well in an environment where staying dry is essential. The great coverage, extra arm length (for reaching), integrated pit vents (essential) and smaller hood all add up to a jacket that is designed specially for hiking, standing in the rain, making/breaking camp, cooking and even looking good in the city. Layering is easy in this jacket and I never feel that my insulation is being compressed or is at risk of getting wet. Happy to cook a meal in the rain wearing the Zeta AR.
When I first got my new shell, I was a bit hesitant because of the price. Let me tell you, that was an epic fail on my part. This shell is "hard wired" for the trail just as it says in the description. The Goretex is solid, the pockets keep stuff dry, and the vents are great for regulating body temp. I also really like the length in the back. I can sit down on a bench or the ground in the pouring rain, and my butt stays dry. I also can fit a down coat underneath it very easily. The rip cords in the pockets that adjust around your mid section are great too! I just picked up a fleece, because I like the shell so much. Highly recommend this jacket for rain, hiking, mountaineering, and daily use.
I bought this as a replacement for an Arc'teryx jacket I'd owned for 6 years. Coming back to a company after such a long time is always a risk for me, materials and craftsmanship may have changed, customer service can be different etc. None of this was an issue with my new jacket. The C Knit fabric is amazingly soft on the inside compared to my previous jacket. It can easily be worn over a t-shirt with no discomfort. It breathes well and the armpit zippers are great ways to shed heat as well if you need to. I've worn this in some serious storms and never had an issue at all.
So had this jacket for over a year now and time for a review. All in all I really love this jacket and has all the features I need. The extra length in the main body is excellent for me, the cnit farbric feels great against the skin and is very quiet, although strange at first the upside down pockets I now prefer. The only issues I’ve had are with the hood as the peak doesn’t cover your face and you get wet. That being said it’s not a storm hood but it’s not great having everywhere dry but your face soaking. It’s a small one but I have found the failure point in 2 hours of constant downpour and the front zip started to leak through, those were bad conditions though! Great jacket in general though and would recommend!
