Doesn't Secure To Axe
I bought a Petzl Summit Evo ice axe and thought this seemed like a great idea to cover the sharp points. It would work fine if your particular Petzl axe has the hole in the bottom of the shaft to attach the piece like in the photo on the package. The Summit Evo has rubber on the bottom of the shaft, with nowhere to attach, so I felt like the piece would fall right off. I returned to REI.
fits perfectly on Petzl ice axes
These fit perfectly, and stay firmly in place, on my Petzl Quark and Petzl Sum'tec. However, they tend to slip off the pick and spike of my Grivel Air Tech Racing. For that ice axe I found the Black Diamond protectors to be a better fit.
Safety first!
I keep my axe on my pack for miles sometimes and knowing that I'm not going to get a spike to the base of my brain is comforting. The pick protector gets used when it goes into storage.
Spike protector falls off constantly
The pick protector seems to work ok, but the spike protector falls off very easily, leading to pokes or damaged gear. Worthless.
works on non petzel ice axe
I didn’t realize that these were specifically designed for Petzl until I ripped open the package. But I put them on my CAMP ice axe and it works just fine. I like that they’re rubber so they seem durable and won’t scratch things up.
Fell off the Axe as noting attaching it to the axe
Try including a lanyard string so it does not fly off first time I hit a shrub
not great for quarks
Haven't used them outside yet to see if they stay on but I can say if you're considering them for quarks they aren't a perfect fit. They cover the main spike but leave the small one out. otherwise they seem solid, especially for pick coverage. I'm packing to go to Ouray so I needed something to keep my packs from getting shredded by the ice tools in the truck bed.
Great inexpensive protection for my Petzl Ice Axe
Bought these in the store for my Petzl Glacier Literide and they fit just fine and complement the look!
