Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a great knife I've had this knife for almost a year and have carried it quite a bit. The quality, fit, and finish are excellent. Lockup is rock solid, yet the open/close action is super smooth. It was fairly smooth right out of the box, but through use it has gotten even better. The thin blade slices really well and the steel holds an edge well. It is very thin and carries well in the pocket. The pocket clip tension is perfect. The only negative thing I can say about this knife is the ergonomics of the handle... there are some weird curves and points that don't feel great in hand, but for light duty tasks, it's not really an issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice steel upgrade, poor QC The 531 is a nice, lightweight EDC knife with the well liked Axis Lock. I was excited to see the REI limited edition with green G10 handles and upgraded steel. Based on other online reviews that questioned the quality control on this knife, I endeavored to check it out in-store, rather than order online - and boy was I glad I did. As others had noted, the primary bevel grind was very asymmetric and blade centering was off on most of the knives I inspected. I found one (out of four) that was acceptable, albeit not perfect. I expect much better QC from Benchmade on a blade that's upwards of $150. I'm happy with the one I took home, especially with the 20% member coupon, but your results may vary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Edge Retention The only other knives by Benchmade I had prior to this were all 154CM. I strip some wires and cut card boards at work, and noticed 154CM would require sharpening after some use so was looking for something that would last longer. Some mentioned 30V would lose the razor sharpness but retain a reasonable edge. That is fine by me, and exactly my experience with this steel. Some say it's hard to sharpen but I don't see that. I bought it with 20% discount and dividend from the store, so it was much cheaper and made the deal very sweet. Regardless, if you're needing something better than regular 154CM, this is a nice upgrade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best This is in my top 5 favorite folders of all time. There is not much that can compete with it. The overall design is beautiful and s30v is a fantastic upgrade over 154cm. Mine was perfectly centered with even grind lines of both sides. It is only 10 bucks more than the standard model but has an upgraded steel and is a limited edition! It is the ultimate lightweight edc. I love that their is no guard to get in the way. if you are a weight conscious person this is it, unless you want to spend another 100 bucks on the 940-1 which in my opinion the s90v is more of a pain than it is worth. S30v is tough gets super shar and holds an edge well. S90v is impossible for a regular person to sharpen (especially in the woods) and doesn't get as sharp in my opinion as s30v. Buy it it is awesome

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty Knife This knife is an REI exclusive. I'm a big fan of the Pardue Series from Benchmade and a sucker for anything green, so I bought this knife the moment I saw it in a store. I already have the Pardue 530 (no serrations) in black and planned on getting a 531; when I saw the green one, it was a 'no-brainer'. It was expensive, but I bought it with the member 20% discount and used a $22 dividend on the price was more palatable. As the first reviewer mentioned, I too noticed that the blade was off-center (when closed) but there is an easy way to fix it. Simply use a small torx screwdriver and loosen the top screw quite a bit. Then, tighten it back up so that it is tight, but not too tight. I always do this to 'assist knives' because it makes them easier to flick open and closed (smoother). Just make sure that the blade had no lateral have to finesse it. Once I did this, I noticed that the blade is perfectly centered when closed (it's just an OCD thing that perfectionists notice). My hunch is that the technician just tightens then up all the way before boxing them up; this process tends to torque them a bit off center, which is only noticeable when closed. However, if you think about it, this would also make the blade less smooth when flicked open and closed. Once the blade is loosened (very, very slightly), it not only looks better—it works better! I plan on buying at least one more for storage/collection...because when this particular knife is gone (sold out/not produced) I will not be able to get another one unless Benchmade decides to produce it for their main line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New EDC favorite I stumbled upon this knife in my local REI store and knew I had to have it. The slim, lightweight design makes this knife disappear in your pocket. This was my first Benchmade knife and I now understand why people love the brand, the quality of this knife is top notch and it came VERY sharp. The opening and closing of this knife is buttery smooth; I really like the axis lock mechanism. The forest green REI co-op exclusive handle really completes this knife; great work REI.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much nicer than the Benchmade 530 This is a beautiful and well constructed knife. I use it for ultralight backpacking. Minus the belt clip it weights 56 grams, which is plenty light by my standards. I also own the benchmade 530, which is about 10 grams lighter. The blade and handle on the 531 seems far more durable and well worth the minuscule additional weight. If you are after a slim and lightweight single blade knife - and don't mind spending the money - this knife might be perfect for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What you should expect from Benchmade This knife is stellar but it cost a little too much for what you get. This is the perfect knife to slip into your jeans everyday, as it is very slim and surprisingly light. I wish it was about a half an inch shorter though. It is very high quality and is also backed by a life time warranty. P.s. You can only find this color at REI, so that's where the extra cost comes from (compared to Amazon)

I feel stupid asking this. This is my first Benchmade knife. My question is opening the knife. I expected some kind of spring assistance and mine simply unlocks the blade and requires a wrist flip to fully open. Is mine working properly ?

Asked by: GWW
The spring-loaded AXIS locking mechanism is referring to the closing of the knife. This knife does not have a spring-loaded opening mechanism.
