Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looking for stability? — Found it! After undergoing spine surgery I was in need of a stability aid for walking. This staff fit the bill to a tee! From the ground up: — It comes with both types of tips - the carbide spike for off-road and the rubber tip for indoors/urban environments. — It has a small basket for ease of movement while still preserving it’s ability to not sink to the handle in soft soil/sand. — This model has a built in shock absorption system - a very nice feature that reduces stress and fatigue which allows the user to travel further and arrive refreshed. — The locking system is a work of art! - the two locks allow for infinite adjustability with absolutely no slippage. Everything is no-tool, so flip the bail open, set the length, adjust the tension with your thumb, and close the bail. Quick, simple, and powerful! — The handle fits perfectly in the palm of the hand. The rubber material makes it slip-proof and comfortable. It seems very sturdy - time will tell. — Finally, there’s the wrist loop which allows you to use both hands (when necessary) without having to find a place to put the staff down. Bottom line is this staff has provided me the stability I need in what I consider the perfect package. It has all of the positive attributes listed above with no drawbacks that I could find. With the aid of this staff, my recovery and rehabilitation will be considerably shorter than it would have been without it. Thanks Leki and REI!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My Third One This is my 3rd Wanderfreund DSS Staff. This one is very strong and adjustable but it lacks the shock absorber of the first two. I'm handicapped and use this when I travel and want to do some hiking and not use a regular cane. The rubber top of the handle near the leash wears down rather quickly. This happened on the first two. I returned the second one after a year because the rubber top kept popping off and finally would not stay attached. Otherwise, I'd give it 5 stars. The rubberized handle top is a poor design and lacks long term durability.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Early problems The pole could not initially be secured at the location I set. Took a long time of putting the pole back together before I was able to get to stop from falling apart

Rated 3 out of 5 by from New model (2017 buy) is a step down from v.1 I have two of these that I now use as a pair for daily hikes and walks on pavement and trail. The latest acquisition (early May 2017) being noticeably a step down from the earlier (2015 vintage). The earlier model, while lacking a cork handle component, has been a solid performer and superior to the Leki paired poles with the smaller handles that I also use. The newer model, just recieved in early May, is similar to the 2015, but less with regard to stability and shock absorption - very noticeable since I use them together several times a day. The newer version fasteners have thus far slipped more easily (shortening the cane) than the previous generation which is a disappointment given how I am using them daily. The new stick also vibrates distinctly with every strike of the tip on the ground - distinctly different than the earlier (2015 or 2016) model that strikes solidly as a single-piece wood cane would strike.
