I bought this 8 months ago at the beginning of Fall. The fit color and details of the jacket are great. It is well built. The fabric, however, is poor. I had the neon yellow and after the first time I wear it for a walk in the city, the fabric started to scratch and show discoloration. Unfortunately, it's not only cosmetic but this discoloration is deep in the fabric that water leaks from it. At the start It was small areas here and there so I didn't mind as I love the look and length of it, but after 8 month of very light use, it's starting to wear and show the discoloration is uneven. This has to be returned. I'm not sure if it's the same with the other colors or I got a bad lemon!
I bought this rain jacket over four years ago- it was a pricey piece of gear for me at the time but in hindsight I should have bought it 10 years ago... I have worn it on dozens if hikes and backpacking trips in modest rain and probably at least 10 times in serious downpours of hours at a time. From the Cascades to the Olympics to typhoons weather in the Southwest in Zion and Grand Canyon- Its an AMAZING piece of gear- the only thing that I suggest to new users is realize that it has more pockets and opening than you think! I love how it packs into the hood and I also love the little brim that stands out. The details are great and the product has lasted me hundreds of miles.
I really liked the jacket. It's light, packable, and good looking. However, after just a few months of light wear, the inner pocket that is glued to the jacket is coming off. Something is very wrong with the way they have attached the inner pocket to the jacket. This is unacceptable for a jacket at this price range.
Waterproof stopped working after 20 months of very light use. Never used with backpack. Followed the company protocol resurfacing jacket with two treatments of Nikwax and water still soaked thru gortex.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this to replace the Columbia Titanium jacket which I did not like at all as it was too rigid. This coat, while basically a shell is perfect for for a powder day. Keeps you dry and wicks moisture from under layers. Let’s face it, if you ski hard, you don’t need many under layers. However, you want something to block the wind while riding the chair. This jacket does just that. The pockets are roomy and the hood fits perfectly over my helmet to block the windy ride up the chair. I like so much better than the Columbia Titanium.
I've used it in rain and it's fantastic - Love the hood, and as hoods go, head rotation/peripheral vision is pretty good - the hood doesn't catch much when you turn your head left to right and block your vision as some hoods do - I've also used it in colder weather with layers underneath as a shell and the wind block is good and it has room for 2 layers I'd say (undershirt/underarmour type and thicker fleece) without feeling cramped - I also really like the pockets both size and location, I like the more front placed side pockets and you can fit a lot in them Biggest cons - My biggest complaint is that everytime I zipper it above about the top of my chest it gets snagged and it takes some straightening of the neck material/zipper to get it zipped all the way up It's really been a great jacket,
I work outdoors on the canal system that requires me to walk as much as 9 miles a day. Occasionally I must walk in rainy weather. About a month ago I purchased the Redstar jacket with the nano pro three layer fabric. I got to try this jacket recently in a rainstorm and was very disappointed in the performance of the jacket. The weather was 55° and raining, after about a mile or so of walking I noticed I was starting to get hot and sweating. By the time I had gone 4 miles I could not wait to get the jacket off as I was soaking wet underneath the jacket and everything in the pockets was getting wet. I had some food in one pocket and phone in the other and they were both soaking wet. Before I started my second walk I took off a base layer as I thought maybe I was overdressed. Well same thing happen again thankfully the second walk was only 2 1/2 miles because I was not only wet I was getting cold.
Real harness and helmet compatibility are hard to find now days. The super breathable material combined with pit and leg vents built into the Red Star Pant and Jacket let me work all day long in the nastiest of the Pacific Northwest's weather and finally be DRY inside raingear. I feel like I'm cheating on Helly Hansen but I hung my Odin gear up for good.
I have had this jacket for 2 years now and still looks new. I take this on every Backpacking Trip and Climbing adventure and backcountry ski trip. This thing gets a lot of use and wears better than other GoreTex pieces I have had from Arcteryx and Mountain Hardware. This breaths a lot better for the price and packs better than my GoreTex Pieces. I Just ordered one for my brother and one for my wife. Few items Can Beat this Product. i read a few of the reviews on this page and my only guess is that they were defective items. and the pockets on jackets are not meant to be "Water Proof" Just water resistant. If it is pouring outside you should wear something underneath that has a pocket to keep it dry no matter what the brand unless it has an inner pocket. This jacket has an athletic fit which is great for me being that i am 5'10" and 165 and layer lightly because this is an active piece for me so i wear a Medium. $100 cheaper than competing GoreTex.
Impressed with the quality, but the size was NOT what I expected. I recently bought a ROM jacket that was an "Athletic" XXL and it fit perfectly. The Red Star was nowhere near the same fit. Way too big. To give you an idea - I'm 6'6" and 240lbs. Sleeve length is great, but the body is massive.
