Awesome Pack!!!!!

Prior to purchasing this bag I spent hours trying out various bags such as the Osprey Aether and the Gregory Baltoro. I initially purchased the Baltoro as it felt comfortable w/ weights and walking around with it for an hour inside the store, however, when I took it on a "mini" backpacking trip (5 miles) w/35 lbs to test out the gear I was disappointed. The padding at the shoulder straps and at the hips gave me sore spots - no matter how much I adjusted/loosened the straps and torso length, so I returned it, and purchased this bag, the REI Traverse 70. This bag blew me away! I recently did a 16 mile backpacking trip on the West Rim at Zion National Park and it performed fantastically. My pack weight came out to 47lbs because I had to carry 8 liters of water. I wasn't sure if the springs were running along the trail, so I thought I'd better be safe than sorry. My expectations were exceeded and the level of comfort it provided was astonishing. The soft and extra padding at the hips (very important as majority of the weight will be resting at the hips) and shoulders provided an unbelievable level of comfort. With some minor adjustments to the hip and shoulder straps I was on my way- no pain, no soreness at the hips, back, or shoulders. The 47lbs I carried felt more like 25-30lbs. I'm 5'9 and 160lbs w/ an average build and purchased the medium. For me, this backpack performed like a dream. The comfort level of this pack may differ depending on your build, but give it a try. REI returns policy is amazing so if you're not satisfied then you have the freedom to return/exchange it for something that suits you better. This pack deserves an A+ in my book.

Velcro lumbar pad/ hip belt attachment failure.

60 miles into my AT hike and the Velcro in the lumbar pad kicks the bucket. I had to tie the lumbar pad into place with paracord. Also a 70 liter pack was way too big for my needs, but is what was recommended to me. More comfortable now with under 50 liter pack.

I love this pack!

I've used it on a couple of trips now and just love the high quality, smart features and comfort. This bag was clearly designed by folks who have backpacked and they found a way to add all important items so the bag rides comfortably as well as the little features that backpackers are looking for like multiple zipped openings so one can access the main compartment and the lower part of the brain with a few easy zips. My only lament is that the side pouches are just a little too high for me to reach back and grab a water bottle; almost put my shoulder out trying. However, taking everything into account (including the purchase price), I would have to say that this is a top-of-the-line bag and I'm looking forward to many adventures with this. See my pics.

Last Pack I Will Ever Buy

This pack is AMAZING!!! It is comfortable if fitted properly, and is so easy to adjust. Straps do not slip at all, and all hardware is built well. The pack is designed to make all gear easily accessible. I've done 2 40+ mile trips, plus all traveling for more then 4 or 5 days and have had zero issues. I do wish the color was a little more vibrant in the chance of rescue needs, but the rain fly combats this. I'd recommend this pack to all beginners and experts.

Well designed/ Well made pack

I am very happy that I bought this pack. The material is durable, there are plenty of compartments, and the fit is superb. There are many different ways to customize the fit and put the load in the right spot. Plus, it comes with a rain cover AND the top brain converts into a daypack. Along with REI's warranty service, these are the reasons why I find this pack to be such a great deal. My one issue is that the side pockets are a bit difficult to access while the pack is on. Also, when the pack is full, you cant fit many big things like nalgene bottles in them. That is not a dealbreaker for me and other than that, I love everything else about the pack.

Great for backpacking

When preparing for an 8-night High Sierra trip last summer, I was choosing between 3 packs: this REI Traverse, Osprey Aether, and Gregory Baltoro. Based on comfort, I was torn between Traverse and Aether. The lower price point of Traverse broke the tie. And I've been very happy with this choice. My starting pack weight was 58 pounds. We covered 50-60 miles, and I felt great. This pack handled the weight well. It felt sturdy, and I never felt sore. And it was nice that the rain cover kept my pack dry in a torrential downpour / hailstorm. Also, I was able to fit the large Bear Vault inside the pack with all my other gear. This pack held up great for the trip!

Great pack!!

This is an amazing pack! I took this backpacking through Peru and felt that it had everything I needed. The included rain cover is helpful, as are the weight straps on the sides. I felt that the bag was sturdy and was big enough to carry everything I needed. I love that the top comes off and can be made into a daypack. Highly recommend this pack!

Best Pack I've Ever Owned Period!

I got this pack at my local REI. I went in to get another pack due to my Gregory Savant 58L hip strap broke and needed a pack right away for an upcoming trip. I went in not knowing which brand however I knew I needed something a little bigger. After trying on a few packs I was sold on this one for a few reasons. 1. Fit: It fits great ( much like an Osprey IMO). 2. Price: Other top brands that offer the same where at least $100 more than this one. 3. Versatility: lots of pockets and an all around great layout for a pack. 4. Quality: This pack is as good quality as any other pack out there. 5. Size: A 70 liter is the perfect size for me. I packed this thing full for my trip last week and held up just fine. The hip and side pockets are stretchy material which is great for trying to get those bulkier items in place such as water bottles etc..also they are at an angle so its easy access to your water bottles. 6. Color: This is purely a personal thing but I really like the color. Other things to note: Loaded this to the top with about 41 pounds to and the pack felt great the whole way through. The way the strap system works is a great design. It really gives your pack a clean packed down sleek and functional feeling. It's hard to describe, you;ll have to check it out yourself. I cannot say enough good things about this backpack. The list goes on and on. If you are thinking of buying it then you will not be disappointed.

Really enjoyed using this pack, had a great fit and form to my back, and had plenty of room or needed essentials while backpacking. It also came with a rain cover. The quality was great. I highly recommend it.

Fits Great!

Looks great, seems that most everything is where it should be. 4 Stars since the side pockets are all but inaccessable with the pack on. My water bottles are tall and I still can't easily get at them. I have only done some local hiking, but all my winter camping gear fits, with some room for more. The pack is a great fit. The included rain fly is a nice touch.

Awesome pack!

I got this pack for Christmas and just in time for a trip to Big Bend. I only wore once in the house before we left. Got it loaded with all my gear and two beers before we started up the Chisos Mountains. It wore superbly all the way up and down. The compression straps pull everything tight against your back. Can't wait to use it again.
