I've run trails for years and thought I was wearing good shoes (Brooks, Sportiva, Asics). I saw these shoes in REI every time I went in and kinda chuckled when I saw them... The soles were so thick. I figured that would hurt the stability on rocks and roots. When I was checking out, the associate recommended I give the shoes a try; so I did. Wow, these are by far the best trail shoes I've ever worn. The stability on uneven surfaces has been superb! The shoes are light, fit well and get great traction. After a long run, my feet aren't tired. I liked them so much, I bought a pair for my dad. I'm a fan! The insoles that came with the shoes were not great, so I swapped them out with another set of shoes. Other than that I recommend giving them a try.
Only put about 15 miles on this shoe so far so this is mostly just 'first impressions'. The shoe is lighter than my road running shoes and the toe box width is almost perfect! My other pair of Hokas have a much more narrow toebox (Conquest 2)... so I was plesantly surprised when I put these on. The tread on this shoe is pretty tame compared to other trail shoes I've owned so I'd think twice before taking these on a rooty or very rocky trail but they have been great on the well maintained local trails here. Pleased to say no complaints. Intended on buying a more expensive pair with more ambitious tread but our REI store didn't have those in stock to try on so I 'settled' for these... and glad I did. Saved myself $50 as these are great for my current needs.
The salesman at Rei talked me into these shoes for trail running. I had doubts but gave them a try. It turns out they are the best running shoes I have ever had! Very light, good traction, half sizes, good for the knees. The only bad part is that they don't last long. I have had 2 pairs. The first pair the tread came off around 200 miles the second pair started failing at around 50 miles. Running 20-30 miles a week gets very expensive. If I had the money I would buy 5 pairs at a time. Wish Hoka could find a way to keep the tread on.
I really enjoy running in this shoe for long distances on trails. It is light and offers protection from landing on roots and rocks. The shoe is an upgrade from the ATR 1. Improved toe bumper and a cushioned tongue. You may want to purchase Lock Laces to keep the laces from coming undone. All in all a great shoe right out of the box. Fit is true to size. REI great job carrying this shoe in your stores early.
Bought these two months ago, and they've been great except for one thing: the outer mesh frayed apart within two months! And I'm not even that active of a runner, maybe averaging 3 miles a week. There's almost no wear to the treads. Aren't running shoes supposed to last for at least 6 months when running way more than I have been?
Best pair of running shoes I have ever owned. I recently had ankle surgery and needed shoes with good arch support and these shoes didn't disappoint! Ordered a second pair just so I can have another one in case this design gets discontinued! The size runs half a size larger than what I normally wear so keep that in mind while ordering.
these are about the most comfortable shoes i've put on my feet and i've worn dozens. the previous iteration left too much volume in the ankle. adding the padded tongue really helped and i love the fit.
I have run trails for several years and streets before for many years. I never felt that I was using the proper shoes for trails until I got a Hoka. I used to have some foot, leg or back issues after running. REI helped me with the selection, were very patient and the shoes are great.
I wasn't sure at first but I decided to give these shoes a try. Three different tread designs to choose from so I decided to try the medium depth. So far I am extremely pleased with my choice. I have used them for everyday, hiking and general walking. I am extremely pleased with the comfort.
I have a severe case of plantar fasciitis and have a trip to Alaska planned in several weeks. I need a shoe which will give me support and cushion. This shoe has a high soft sole so we thought it would work. It didn't. The heel is lower than most shoes putting more pressure on the heel which is my primary source of pain. The shoe insert is maybe 1/8 " thick and a size 12 wouldn't accommodate a size 11 Sole insert replacement. Without plantar fasciitis this may be a great shoe but it didn't work for me.
