Love the simplicity of this.
This was an upgrade for me from the Edge 200 which worked just fine but the display was scratched up from a fall. Anyway, I was worried about it being too small but it is really perfect for me. I set the display to read elapsed time, distance and cadence and that is all I need. Have not had cadence sensor since I did roading years ago but I think that for my kind of XC riding it is useful for me. The Bluetooth works well on my phone. Calls display well. The app works fine and so far no issues with syncing but I have only had it about a month and have not really done much other than review my rides. Great quality and easy to use. Have never liked the idea of having my phone mounted out there and I really did not need the features in the more expensive models (even though I do like the color and large displays). It is small but if you do not need fancy and want small and light then this is fine.
Great little device
I like it. The display is small but easy to read. It has no problem getting a GPS signal fast. The Connect software is useful and connecting with other apps is straightforward. The cadence sensor seems to work well. Battery life seems reasonable. I have had decent results with the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone. It works most of the time without issue. Occasionally it will connect but not immediately upload new data when the connect app is accessed. Overall, it's really nice to have it auto sync then provide the data to Strava.
Great GPS for the price!!
PRO: Cost, programmable displays, programmable courses, connection to Strava/MapMyRide, size, turn-by-turn navigation CON: Monochromatic display, Bluetooth connection is difficult I bought this to replace a Specialized Sport computer, after about 100 miles, I’m loving it! The unit is small and can mount to handlebars or stem. The cadence sensor attaches a crank arm and both the unit and sensor were installed in under 10 minutes! The unit allows you to program you displays which auto-scroll during your ride. You can select the scroll speed. One screen is always time and date. The other two are programmable. You can select ride time, distance, speed, average speed, calories, cadence (with sensor installed), total ascent (GPS data only), and elevation (GPS data only). The display does NOT have a pace arrow, but I have speed and average speed on the same page, so I can tell with a glance if I’m keeping on pace or not. There is a backlight which can be turned on with a push of a button or can be set to remain on while the unit is powered. Since I ride early morning, this is a very nice feature. No more waiting for the next streetlight to check my pace! The GPS acquires very quickly. So far it’s been ready to go within two minutes of moving the bike outside. Through Garmin Connect you can import ride data into Strava or MapMyRide. Garmin advertises that live tracking through Bluetooth is available, but I’m been unable to synch my unit with my Iphone. Looking on line, I see that lots of folks are having difficult synching different Garmin products with IOS, so I don’t think it’s ‘operator error’. Creating a course is very simple through Garmin connect. You locate where you want to ride on a map and then start clicking your route. Another click and it’s sent to your unit. When you ride a course you’ll get prompts of upcoming turns. You get a ‘beep’ and then a countdown in feet until the turn. There is also a graphical depiction of which way you turn; this is a nice feature. When you hit the turn, the unit beeps again. The display just shows you a black line for the turn, there is no map data in the unit. You can also just hit start and the unit will start displaying and recording your ride. This only takes two button pushes to start. The unit is an inch and a half square, so there is definitely room on your stem or handle bars to mount. The cadence is a wireless unit that is completely self-contained. You do not need a magnet on your crank and an ANT+ sensor on your chain stays. The battery is rated for 8 hours and so far my longest ride is 3 hours. Even with the backlight on continuously, I was able to get two 3-hour rides between charges and I never got a low-battery indication. One drawback is the screen is monochromatic, but to move up to a color screen was at least another hundred dollars. Overall, I am very pleased with the unit. I have not noticed a difference in the data from my old computer which uses a mag pickup and the course programming is very nice when I want to ride a new route and am afraid I’ll take a wrong turn and get lost. The only reasons I'm not giving 5 stars is the Bluetooth issues (with all Garmin products as I'm learning on line) and the monochromatic screen.
readable, easy to use
The unit is easy to use. I bought it because it has a wireless, magnet-less cadence sensor. The sensor is one of those that is well designed and you wonder why others did not think of it sooner. It has a large readable display for the reading glass set of users. The buttons are intuitive, on/off, enter, back and scroll down. The small size allows me to carry it in my pocket and use it for recording a hike as well. The drawback to give it a low rating is its USB interface. It has a special connector as opposed to a simple cable. Then when connected to the computer it takes minutes to connect. If you get impatient then the unit loses all its data. The other is the unit must be connected to the USB connector BEFORE connecting to the computer. Done the other way and you could lose all your data because it could take a few tries to clip into the unique USB connector. Also, yesterday I was riding near sea level and all of a sudden it said I was at 300 ft. My other unit did not make the same mistake. I enjoy using it and as long as cadence is the main reason I purchased it, then I am happy with it.
