Good running shorts

I purchased these shorts in March of 2016 so I believe they are the newer version that everyone is complaining about. Let me address the negatives first. The waist-string, I don't use it, but it is short and not sure how it would even work unless the shorts were significantly oversized. The pockets aren't protected, this is true the material is thin and anything abrasive would no fare well. The liner, others have complained of this and I thought I might have an issue as well, however I prefer Exofficio grab-n-go boxers which fit very similar. The liner worked great for me, but it does pull the shorts down a bit on the hips, though they never go lower than that. Finally, there are three pockets which is great, but if you fill them even partially it will tighten the crotch area to the point that you may not be comfortable. Now for the positives. The material is great and breathable, doesn't seem to stink easily either. Ran multiple 5ks and 15ks in these without chafing or any other issues. A Nexus 6P will fit into the side pocket without issue. I also store my key fob in the back pocket and they don't get too tight. I am 5' 7", 135lbs and the small fits a bit snug but medium is too large.

Chafed like no shorts have ever chafed me before!

Multiple pockets, much less multiple zipped pockets, on running shorts seem to be hard to find, so I was excited about finding these shorts. Until I wore them on a 12 mile run on a pleasant, dry day. Though there are no seams on the liner, the liner also provides zero support. I knew I was in trouble 1/4 of a mile in. I have never chafed so bad from a pair of running shorts during a run that wasn't in pouring rain - and in places that no man ever wants to chafe at that! Running commando in denim would have been less painful! This was my first purchase of anything by Patagonia. If these shorts are any indication of their understanding of male anatomy (or lack thereof), it is my only Patagonia purchase.

Shorts with secure pockets.

I found what I was looking for. Three pockets with zippers provide me with plenty of storage and the security of knowing my things won't get lost on the trail. The front pockets are big enough to hold an iPhone 6. These shorts seems to wear lower on the waist, but it's not an issue. I thought the 8 inch length would be too long, but they look and feel great. The inner brief feels good on the thighs. The drawstring it too short. You really have to use your fingertips to tie a bow. I will rig an extension string and make it work. I would have given 5 stars except for the drawstring. I will buy another pair and I will be set for many seasons for trail running.

Great shorts!

I own and coach at a CrossFit gym and spend a lot of time in workout clothes. So far I have done everything from olympic lifting to running intervals in these short and they have proven very comfortable and allow all kinds of movement. If they hold up like other Patagonia products I own, I'll be back for more!

Follow-up Review: Redeemed!

I initially hated the changes to these shorts over last year’s model but have since grown to love them. Since getting these shorts I’ve put in about 100 miles of road/trail running and have summitted multiple peaks in NY’s Adirondacks, and they just keep getting better. I’ve order two more pairs since, in different colors. Most notably, while mowing my front lawn two nights ago I unwittingly ran over an underground wasp nest and was immediately swarmed by hundreds of the angry little buggers. As per usual, I was mowing while “commando,” but the awesome lining of these shorts thwarted the wasps’ attempts to fly up my shorts and reach my critical lower region. Thanks, Patagonia, for making a pair of shorts capable of protecting my junk against angry wasps! Please note, these shorts should not be intentionally used as armor against wasps.

Greatest shortest ever built

I wear these so much! A few people have complained about the boxer inserts but I think they have a perfect fit. This is also why they make an unlined version for people who would like to alter the fit. I train, hike, and even bike in them on short runs. Perfect short for kicking around town or getting active. No binding, no riding up or down. Zipper pockets are great! The only thing I would suggest is about 2 more inches on the draw string cord, I can tie them up but it'd be nice to have little slack. Live simply. Love and pace.

Not a great fit, materials feel top notch

I'm honestly disappointed in these shorts and I wish I could return them, but I've already worn them. I usually wear a size 30 waste in Patagonia, sometimes can even get into a 29 in other brands. I ordered size small, which should comfortably fit However, these shorts are too tight such that they pull across my front regions. Also, after some movement, because of the spandex on the inside, they feel like they pull down in the back. I loved the color and the material feels great. The fit is just pretty bad.

Great running shorts - very versitle

Purchased these for running while traveling. Because these have zip side and back pockets they can be used for more than running - beach, pool, etc. Very good as running shorts as well. Nice fit, comfortable fabric.

Well made with zippered pockets

Searching for shorts with zippered pockets, I was pleased to find these in an REI store. I swim frequently, in the sea, and need a secure place for my keys. Velcro does not cut it, at least for me. Three zippered-pocket shorts are tough to find, and I grabbed these. The pockets are not large but work for a large set of keys, money in another pocket, etc. I am a nomad, the secure pockets equate to peace of mind. The fit is snug. I bought a large when a medium might work for other shorts.

Nice shorts except for the liner

The compression liner makes hiking and running in these shorts in warm weather unpleasant. They're great once I cut out the liner.
