Great helmet mounted light

I have recently started mountain biking at night, so I was wanting to get a helmet mounted light to supplement my bar mounted light. The bar light is a Light and Motion TAZ 1200 that I originally purchased for road commuting. I looked at Light and Motion and did not feel they had a solid helmet mounted solution. The NiteRider is a perfect blend of brightness, weight and run time for my needs. My rides rarely go longer than 3 hours and so far, this light can be run at the second highest setting without any difficulty making it through those rides. The button on the head unit is easy to feel even with gloves on so I can change the brightness depending on the terrain.

Bad battery issues as well

Just received my Pro 1400 Race light. Unfortunately, I am having the same issues that other users are reporting with their my battery. Haven't even used it yet because it won't take a charge. Right out of the box battery won't take a charge. Red light goes out after +/- 15 minutes of charging. I will follow up with REI/NiteRider and try another battery, but proceed with caution. Product appears to have battery issues.

Battery is a Weak link

Did extensive research on a light for biking when the sun drops in the early winter. Not a lot of assurance industry wide on quality, powerful bike lights. Purchased the 1400 pro, charged the battery overnight and it seemed to charge fine. The battery didn't hold any charge the next day, without using the light! Plugged the charger back in to recharge it and the red charge light just flashed. NiteRider has very little information on troubleshooting their battery, so I called their customer service. They offered to replace the battery since it was new and defective. Decided to return it to REI. Got to have faith that a battery is going hold a charge in the dark. Should have known, when the battery only has a 180 day warranty.

Battery Issues

The first unit I received would only randomly charge. Usually the charge indicator (red/blue LED on battery) would just go out after a while. On the rare occasion that it turned blue, indicating a full charge, it still would not power the light at full brightness and I had it shut down completely about 30 minutes in to a night ride. I returned that one and got another. Same flakey charging issues. The one time that it indicated a full charge, I tested the light and it powered up to full brightness. Went out for a ride the next night and it was completely dead. Now it won't take a charge at all. I tried contacting NiteRider's customer service through their web site and haven't heard anything back from them. When it worked, it was a great, bright light with a wide and even beam pattern. Too bad they seem to have a bad batch of batteries on their hands. I've wasted enough time with it and missed out on enough night rides. Back it goes to REI and I'll try another brand.

Great Lite, Eventually

OK, so 4 stars, I love the light, but as several other reviews have indicated, there must have been a bad batch of batteries with this product. The first unit I received would not charge the battery. Just like another customer wrote: red charging light came on for a while, but never did the blue LED come on to indicate a good charge. REI was, of course, very helpful when I called. They shipped a second unit to me immediately and that one worked great. The features of the bike light are very useful. 4 brightnesss levels, bright flash mode for road riding. It’s so much brighter than any light I’ve used, including other Nite Rider lights. I trust the Nite Rider brand, I’ve used them for 24 hour bike races since the early 2000’s. That’s why I was willing to get the second unit. The battery life in the instructions looks to be accurate. Full brightness, really bright, 2 hours. If I have a long ride, the two medium brightness settings are still nice and bright, with long battery burn times.

Mixxed bag

Bought at the REI Garage sale. Now I know why. I knew the one I bought was a project. (X-ed , no. return) with a spare battery. Pros: bright , wide beam, large battery capacity, great mounts, runs cool, solid feel. good charge display Cons> very proprietary battery I build ebike bats and this is a funky design. Occ will be dead. BMS likes a 14 hour charge. light controller said to be inside the battery, sometimes fails to charge. At this price point it should have been failsafe. Seems like they had some cells that didn't perform well and the BMS is either odd or doesn't play well with them. It has worked much better after several cell conditioning cycles, so may have just been a cell balancing issue. I ride with a helmet spot to complement the flood, so have never been caught out, and a 350 lumen light is really plenty. if well aimed

Battery doesn't work

I bought this but the battery only holds the charge 30% of the time. I usually have to top it off for 25min before going out, which is annoying when you already wake up at 5am to ride!
