love this kayak
I tried the kayak at Demo Days. Moves great in the water and very comfortable. Lots of room. Only negative is the weight, cannot take on/off vehicle without another person to help.
I've Owned 3 Malibu 2XL's so you know I think :-)
Over the last 20 years I have owned three Malibu 2XL's. The first one I bought at a REI garage sale for $300. It was the first kayak I ever owned. I used it for fishing freshwater lakes in NCAL and eventually began fishing saltwater. It actually handles well in swells but I sold it because when paddled solo on the ocean its a little slow because of the shape of the hull and it was had to keep up with my buddies. Then I decided to take my dog fishing with me and ended up buying a second Malibu 2XL. When we moved to Washington, I didn't fish the ocean as much and the Malibu 2XL became the only kayak I used. It lasted 14 years until it started leaking a few weeks ago fishing sockeye on Baker Lake. It was unrepairable and we ended up buying a third. Comfort, stability and lots of room are its strengths. With 2 paddlers, it can cruise at 3-4 MPH which is decent speed. Although most of the time I am fishing solo with my dog and we routinely paddle 4-7 miles a day with no difficulty, if she is laying down, LOL Yeah its windy in the gorge. Here is the important part. I have loaded and unloaded my Malibu 2XL myself for 20 years and I am 5"10" 175 pounds and now 67 years old and by no means burly. I use hully rollers on the rear roof rack and mako saddles on the the front rack. Use a rubber bath mat with suction cups to protect the rear roof of your car or SUV and a silicon seat pad to keep the stern from sliding out when you lift the bow onto the roof. The only caveat is the back of the car has to be level, otherwise when you lift the bow on the roof, it will slide off sideways. I tried hullivators but it is too bulky and heavy. It's the best SOT 3 seat tandem on the market. My wife and I almost cried when our little red tandem sprung a leak. :-( Then we got a new sunrise Malibu 2XL!
LONG Unit SHORT Storage
Great on the water but short on storage. For the price, all three hatches shouldn't be optional. Kayaks for less money come with these features included. Even the Venus 11 came with a 6" Cam Latch hatch and a Quick Seal Hatch. I'm not looking forward to cutting up the deck and adding Gaspachi hatches for more $$. Disappointed for this reason. Otherwise, I feel this is a very well made unit.
Love it for tandem or single!
This is the best for the price on the market, well balanced, good waterline, easy to navigate, shallow enough draft to navigate in shallow waters without having to walk it.
Let the fun begin!
This is such a value add to our lives. It met our every expectation.
Utilitarian beast
I bought this kayak used from a rental facility, along with an extra seat; they cut out the center oval for extra storage. We paddled in the Malibu on inland lakes with two adults and a kid for years, until our son was 8yo. Aside from scratches all along the bottom from being dragged to/from the car/water, none of which put the kayak at any risk, and some sun fading, it's good as new. I think a tank could run over it and leave only scratches. At 68 lbs it's unwieldy out of the water, even for two strong adults, but it beats lugging around a tandem + a single just to take a small family on the water for an afternoon. Easy to hop in and out of for quick swims, and lots of places to clip carabiners for whatever random stuff you'd like to take with you. Can't recommend it highly enough!
Great kayak but size can make it challenging
Great kayak for my wife and me. I'm 6'3 and she is 5'3 so very different sizes. Took us a while to find the right seating mix but once we did, we were gold. Seats could be a bit more substantial. Very lightweight for such a large kayak. A bit difficult for one person to move due to its size but doable. Only issue we have with it is that it is so big, it sticks about 6 feet out of the back of our pickup truck and takes up a lot of ceiling space in the garage.
Great family kayak!
This kayak works great for as family kayak. The stability is awesome with the young kids and dog. Very easy to get in and out of. Probably not the best for long distance paddles, but we've taken it several mile paddles up and down the rivers and lakes of WI.
Ample room for 2 adults
The sit on top kayak is easy to get in and out of. The seats are comfortable and there’s plenty of room for 2 bags/coolers. It’s a good looking kayak too. The only down side is that it’s heavy. Requires 2 strong adults to load/unload off roof rack.
Awesome
First day on the water. Very pleased with the kayak. Delivered without any issues, kayak was well protected during shipment and no scratches. Kayak held 2 adult males with no problem. Very sturdy and well constructed. Overall very satisfied.
