I needed a new pack for some longer day hikes this summer (including a few hut to huts in the White Mountains). Picked up this bag for it's size and price ($99 was a steal compared to others at the same size). Almost everything about the pack has been great. Material doesn't rip,the top opening main compartment makes it easy to find everything you need without rummaging, and the actual frame is sturdy and lightweight. One downside is the water bottle compartments. They are a little shallow for my bottles, and they popped out once when I lost my balance. Two carabiners attached to the loops on the pack fixed this easily.
I got the REI Trail 30 to replace a 15 year old EMS day pack that got misplaced in my last move. It was taken for a test drive in some slot canyons, and after 10 or so miles I have to say I am impressed. It's comfortable and durable, well ventilated on the back and has plenty of stash pockets and mesh compartments for snacks and water bottles. The coolest feature is the main compartment full length zipper that basically splits the pack completely open, giving access to everything without the need to rummage. I'm very pleased with my purchase, and for the price, even if you choose to add a bladder, you'll be hard pressed to find a better featured pack. The Trail 30 value is incredibly high.
After seeing this pack for the first time I knew it was likely going to replace my previous dying day pack. Since I picked it up, I really use it 5 to 6 days a week for my job. As an outdoor education camp educator/naturalist, I have to be able to carry lots of stuff at a time and this pack does a great job at it. Plus all of the straps means I can carry extra stuff on the outside. Also pretty solid water bottle pockets.
I got this pack last summer when I went backpacking for three weeks across southeast Asia. It held all my gear just fine. I put my tablet in the back pocket (where the bladder goes) and it worked fine. My only complaint is that nothing stayed in the side pockets-- things tended to pop out. It's not the most breathable but it was a fairly comfortable pack to carry.
I was in the market for a new backpack to travel with and to do some day hikes with... this pack is the perfect size for this. Love the daisy chains and full body zipper. The pockets on the hip belt are good sized and hold my cell phone and wallet without issue (along with my earbuds and some snacks with room left over). My son has the 25L version and used it all summer long doing biological and chemical testing of waterways during an internship - he was very pleased with the performance of that bag and I must concur... awesome bag. Quality is excellent. Color is kind of meh but with a few new zipper pulls and carabiners on the daisy chain it is growing on me.
I've been looking for a pack that I could use for travel (as my main suitcase/carry on) that would fit under the seat of a plane (I haven't tested this yet, but I think it will be ok), biking, walking, day trip, hiking, car camping, well-a little bit of everything. The size is perfect, and the 3 entry points with the zippers makes getting to the main compartment a breeze. All of the little pockets both inside and out (3 mesh external, 2 zippered external, 1 mesh internal, 1 zippered mesh internal, 1 bungee internal, 1 bladder/laptop area internal and 2 zippered side hip pockets, one solid and one mesh) are thoughtfully placed and sized well. The last bag I tried (Camelback Fourteener 20) seemed to have pocket placement that interfered too much with the main storage compartment. The hip pockets are very spacious-I'm able to fit a friends iPhone 6 plus (in a case) in it with room for a little smoking pouch. I haven't used a hydration bladder with it yet, but there is a compartment to hold it with a hook, and exit port. There are areas on the shoulder straps for the hose, and a holder for the nozzle. I actually bought this on 7/17 en route to Reno/Lake Tahoe. I repacked into it and used it on a walk about Reno, at the beach on Lake Tahoe, and a hike. I'm still trying to find the most comfortable adjustment, but beyond that this bag is really surprisingly comfortable. When I was looking at the Camelbak, I did briefly look at this bag, but admittedly dismissed it due to not being a 'brand name' like Camelbak or Osprey. That was a mistake! Don't make that same mistake...this would be an excellent pack even if it was priced like those brand names, but it's not. It's significantly cheaper. I happened to get a coupon for 25% off one full priced REI item, and with no sales tax in Oregon (where I bought the bag), I was able to get a bigger, better bag for $60 less than the Fourteener 20. I really haven't found any cons, other than I wasn't a huge fan of only getting to pick green, but I got over that pretty quick. Bottom line-Give this bag a serious look (along with the Trail 25 and Trail 40 depending on size needed).
I bought this pack to replace my standard backpack. I will be taking it on business trips, to the gym, to class and of course on day hikes. The pack is very comfortable and it's very accessible. There are two hip pockets you can put whatever you want in, phone, keys, snacks. They are why I picked this bag as opposed to a similar size Deuter. You can unzip the main compartment from either side or from the top, while leaving the rest of the zipper closed. Pretty sweet. And when you lay the pack down on it's back you can open the zipper all the way and you have access to the entire compartment. The zippers go all the way to the bottom of the pack. Instead of having to sit it up on it's bottom and reaching down in to it to pack, you lay it down on it's straps and you have access to the entire compartment. Very easy to pack / unpack. On my short hike of 3-4 miles that I took to get a feel for the pack it sat very comfortably on my waist. My girlfriend actually wanted to wear it on the way back from our hike. She might get one herself. I'm looking forward to wearing it for 15 miles on Long's Peak. After that happens I will re-write my review.
The Trail 30 is not the best looking pack out there, but the quality is good, and the price is right. It has great all around quality. It is a comfortable pack for hiking and holds plenty of gear. It is equipped for a water bladder, but the bladder is not included. Like most day packs, back suspension is not super breathable, so this pack can get a little hot on your back. It has excellent attach points for hiking poles and is a great general purpose day pack for hiking.
Have really enjoyed using the Trail 30. It is spacious, has several smaller pockets for smaller items and fits my body type well. I have only used it for one trip, but think it will work well for my travel and day hiking needs.
I got this backpack for my boyfriend who needed a new school and day hiking backpack. It works great for both. Despite having really only one big pocket, it has a lot of little pockets and places to put a lot of stuff. His one complaint is getting things in and out easily since there is only one big pocket and only one place really where everything goes.
