We have been using it for three years camping in Shenandoah NP. Colour coded tabs, poles make it easy to set up in the wind, stays up in the wind and rain and really nice with pockets (for glasses), hooks for light, and vestibules (makes it easy to take boots or shoes off and on). The roof vents are a nice added touch for ventilation. Don't forget to order the footprint for additional ground protection. We downsized from the big family tent to this for the two of us ... its height and width make it easy to get dressed in. We have had other tents in our life but this is by far the best so far!!!
I bought this tent last month which replaced my old REI Taj 3. It's maiden use was on the beaches of Kauai, Hawaii. The tent was light weight for a 4-man tent, relatively easy to setup, and gave us great views of all of the different beaches we stayed on. Wish the pole setup was a little different instead of one, all inter-connected contraption that seemed a little awkward, but in the end it was still pretty easy to setup especially if two people were working together to do this. Also, it was super roomy for 2 people plus full backpacks and other gear all inside. Rainfly vestibule was pretty large too!
I bought this tent a few months ago and have used it about five times now. The first time I used it was on the coast of a small island and it really stood up to the powerful winds coming off of Lake Michigan. It rained a lot each time I've used it and there have been no leaks!! The most people that have slept in it were 3, with thermarest mattresses and larger rectangular sleeping bags. Our gear was kept in a friend's tent as we didn't want to keep it in the vestibule. All of the other trips it has been on it has only held two people, and along with gear it was very roomy!! So by my standards it's really a two person tent, but it is great quality and will hopefully hold up for many years!!
We love this tent! Our household has both the 2 person half dome and the 4 person. The four person fits my boyfriend and i comfortably along with our large dog. We had more than enough space for our bags too. Easy to set up, compact and light. The 2 person is 5lbs 1 oz. and the 4 person is 6lbs 12 oz... definitely worth the extra 2 lbs if you can manage. It was windy when we camped last and we didn't have any issues. This tent has SO many pockets!
Im a research maniac when it comes to my gear and finaly decided for this one. This tent does a great job. I use it as a 1 or 2 person tent. I like having lots of space. Usually go camping in the Mexican Baja on surf trips and this tent knows how to take a beatting and performs excellent. When I use it as a 1 person tent, feels like a condo, I keep my surfboards and my dog with me at night and still have good space. If you use the guidelines properly it can handle strong winds without bending. If you camp at the beach, buy the sand anchors and you will have a great rigg. Enjoy !!
This tent has had low use, maybe 5-6 x's total. The last trip we took, the bungees completely shot! For the price I paid for this tent, I expected more years of use. I had an old Coleman 4 person tent with many many years of use that was much more durable (it's still being used by my niece to this day). Come on REI, I have always trusted your equipment and warranty. As I see in this thread of reviews, a lot of people are complaining of the same issue which I would conclude is a problem with the poles. My hope is that REI will stand by their products and make it right for the many loyal customers having this issue. Consumer let down.
We've had the same backpacking tent for 20 years, so we take good care of our tents and expect them to last. We purchased this for use on occasional car-camping trips with my son's scouting group. After using it three times under truly mild conditions, we noticed that the screen had begun to stretch and pull away from the nylon seam in several spots and already had two holes in it. Because we car-camp so rarely, this was 18-months past our purchase and the store - disappointingly - would not take it back. Really disheartening experience. We'll think twice about purchasing the REI-branded products in the future - this is our second bad experience.
The tent poll bungees wore out after only 3 years of medium use. The tent polls were all connected on this model and I think consequently wore out the bungees much faster than having separate tent polls. Otherwise I really liked this tent. REI said this was no longer under warranty and we could buy replacement polls from tent poll technologies. Probably try to re-bungee ourselves but could be interesting with all the polls being connected. Next time I will also search for a tent that opened at head and feet rather than sides since folks in middle have to crawl over people sleeping on sides to get up in middle of night.
I have owned this tent for a couple of years now. Generally speaking the tent is good and would serve most people well. That said, I am giving this tent a 3 star rating because of the pole system design. All of the poles are connected, as in they do not come a part. An interesting idea that did not pan out this time around. I find myself constantly having to redistribute the elastic cord connecting the poles so the poles will connect properly when set up. This was not an issue until about six months of ownership. Maybe just my tent but its gotten annoying after two years of use. Hopefully this is addressed in the future as the rest of the tent is very good.
This tent is roomy and has kept us dry during several hard rains. After only five set-ups, one of the poles developed a crack. I called REI and was told this was not a common problem, but after looking at reviews, it seems that a number of people have had this happen. We asked about replacement poles and were told we would have to return the tent and reorder, as new poles were not available. My husband and I are 68 years old, with many years of camping and tent use behind us, and we are very careful with our gear. We have never had poles break before. In my opinion, this is a weakness in materials or design, and I hope REI will consider some sort of fix for this problem.
