Always back to Oakley
I had a pair of Smiths and then a pair of Spy's. My friend had a pair of these and when I tried them on they were not too large and not too small, I am 6ft 185lbs. I have 2 young kids, needless to say they are scratch resistant and work well in low light. The only complaint that I have is that over time the plastic hinges get sloppy and that the silk bag it comes with is too small. I have had them for around 2 years and the rubber is getting loose.
Made in the USA Qakley quality and technology.
I bought these to replace the Smith Backdrop sunglasses I returned (see my review on those) and I'm very glad I went with the Oakley Valve Polarized instead. These sunglasses are "Made in the USA" and exemplify the craftsmanship, quality, and technology that makes Oakley the leader in sport sunglasses. The lenses are polycarbonate but have better optical clarity than glass lenses I've tried including my Ray Bans and the Smith Backdrops. The reason why can be attributed to Oakley's "High Definition Optics". Their website explains how and why this feature creates for the optical clarity these lens provide. As someone with 20/15 vision from Lasik, I can attest that these Oakleys do my superb vision justice in maintaining excellent clarity. The frames are lightweight and also have a rubber-like grip substance on the ear and nose contact areas. These make for excellent grips so they don't slip off when things get oily or sweaty. I have oily skin so grips were a requirement for my sunglasses. The Valve Polarized is offered in a "Matte Gray Smoke" frame which is quite unique. I originally wanted a high gloss black frame but given the fit of these Valves and their polarized lenses, I settled for these opaque smoke frames. I actually like them quite a bit now that the look has grown on me. It has a technical look that very few sunglasses offer. The only issue I have is that the space between the lenses above the nose is somewhat too see-through in full sun so if you have light skin, it can look a bit odd as you wear the sunglasses. Not a big issue. You can also get the Valves in other frames but the polarized lenses come in this Matte Gray Smoke frame. The polarized lenses work great and help eliminate glare in all kinds of situations. Oakley offers "Prizm H20 Deep Polarization" Valves for those who want maximum polarization for water sports like fishing. For purposes like general, sport, and driving use, I think these gray smoke Valve Polarized are best. These really eliminate the glare from your windshield while driving and helps you to see through the windshields of other cars to see the driver. The fit is also good for those like me who have wider heads. I'm very picky about sunglasses because many standard sizes end up hugging my head too tightly and causing headaches. These Valves are designed for "medium to large" faces so while they first felt like they were a little bit tight, I got used to them. The Smith Backdrops were for just "medium" faces and were too tight; the main reason I returned them. The Valves also have large lenses that fully cover your field of vision. Gaps are very small so these are great for those outside a lot on high glare, high reflection environments like water, sand, light concrete, etc. Oakley's polycarbonate lenses are also strong and shatter-resistant so these also offer a good level of eye protection. They won't shatter like glass lenses but may be more prone to scratches. Overall, these are excellent sunglasses and really exemplify the leadership of Oakley in sport sunglasses. I'm very glad I went with these in the end. If you're like me and have a wider head or are sensitive to temple-area pressure but need sport sunglasses with polarization, give the Oakley Valve Polarized a try.
