Rated 5 out of 5 by from Same as Skybox Pro After years of borrowing from a friend, I purchased my own Skybox for our annual trek to Lake Tahoe from San Diego. This newer version is much easier to open and close and with the tapered rear end allows for better clearance above the rear lift door. The box is fundamentally the same as the Skybox Pro, with the only difference being the finish on the lid. Instead of a painted black or silver finish, the surface is dimpled like a golf ball. Oddly. this gives it kind of a carbon fiber look from a distance. I like it and the $100 I saved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adds Extra Space without sacrificing MPG I was a little nervous that my Forester was going to loose a lot of mpg's while this thing was on the roof but as long as I kept the car around 70-72 mph on the highway it was fine. At higher speeds the box does flex the cross bars. Despite the flexing it never came loose after a 2000 mile road trip. I wonder if yakima cross bars would be stiffer. It was nice that the rear is shaped in a way that allows the rear tailgate to fully open and the latch system is great. I was a little nervous at first at how flexy the plastic feels but I couldn't be happier at how it performed. We had it jammed packed with stuff but it kept it safe and dry. I like the fact that I can open it on both sides and the locking mechanism seems well built. I had used a Thule before but did not like how it worked, but you should go into REI to try both for yourself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For car camping. I use this box on a 2016 Toyota Corolla. It works fine on this small car. The distance between the Yakima rack bars is adequate. It has very little wind resistance and does not reduce my mileage. Many of the sales persons at REI told me this box is too big for my car. It's not true.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great SkyBox Just picked this cargo box up with the 20% off members discount a few days before it expired. So far I have driven around town and a little highway driving and seems to be a great addition to my 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited. I haven't done any long trips (more than 20 miles) but will be using it for family vacations this summer. I have loaded it up with strollers, golf clubs, lawn chairs, etc. And it can fit an amazing amount of cargo. I can also fit my Outback in my garage with this on top with about 3 inches of clearance (standard size garage for todays homes). I like the dimpled black with a slight gloss that compliments the Outback's Venetian Red. I give this product 4 stars..my complaint I have with this cargo box is the interference with the rear hatch. I knew this when I bought it, however there is an online tutorial on how to trim a piece of the box off without ruining the function of the Skybox. Plus I can set the hatch height to a lower setting to where it won't hit the cargo box. I honestly have debated about shifting to a Thule, not sure yet. With REI's return/exchange policies, I want to try this out and if I feel the need to exchange I will do so. Until then, I am pleased with the purchase and looking forward to long family trips full of fun with more cargo to take.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Skybox 18 Carbonite- Very satisfied Bought the 18cu.ft version in the summer from REI. Relatively easy to install and super easy to re-install in minutes once the interior fastening points have been adjusted. Used it heavily for trips from upstate to Manhattan and back on OEM Audi bars on an A4 and works perfect. It has been through rains, storms, snowstorms and winds and it just works perfectly all the time. No trace of water ever inside. Wind noise is not that bad and actually very little. Little to no drop in millage. I've been able to get 30-32 mpg actual on highway with this on the roof.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, expanded my storage more than hoped! I purchased this to make more room for camping gear for a few buddies of mine. It holds an REI Kingdom 6, marmot limestone 4, 6 sleeping bags, all the sleeping pads to go with them and enough clothes for a week away from civilization! I can now let all the guys ride in the car with me while our gear travels above us. Carpooling on our camping trips has been made possible with this roof box. No more caravaning 2 or 3 cars to the mountains!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extra room This thing is awesome. We haven't had it long but after a 1000+ mile road trip through thunderstorms with negligible to no drop in gas mileage (32 MPG @70 MPH) our gear was safe, sound and dry. We threw on top of a BMW X1 with a Thule rack since Yakima didn't have mounts yet for our year. Only issue was I couldn't open the tailgate all the way but i figured that going in and adjusted the opening height so it was minor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adds so much cargo space! I bought this just before Thanksgiving in 2016 - needed to replace the immense cargo hauling capacity that I lost when I replaced my Suburban. The box is pretty light - can be easily handled by two. It is also very sturdy when loaded and locked. On top of that, it looks great on the car. Very happy with this purchase. Typical great Yakima quality.

Is the skybox watertight?

Asked by: Featherfunk
Cargo boxes are water-resistant. For most situations, the contents will remain dry, but water can penetrate under extended heavy rain/high winds. Any cargo that can be damaged by water should be in water tight bags/containers.

what size cargo box for a 2014 honda odyssey. also how many suite cases would fit in the 18 vs 16?

Asked by: lyndseyl13
To determine fit, we recommend measuring hatch clearance by positioning your front crossbar in the foremost position and measuring from center bar to your hatch seam. The clearance needs to be at least 57" for a SkyBox 18 not to interfere. A SkyBox 16 requires 52". We recommend comparing the box dimensions shown in specs with the size of your suitcases to determine how many will fit.

Hello, I have a 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5L. Will the hatchback door on my car be able to fully open or does the cargo box interfere?

Asked by: Brian
In order to determine if the hatch will interfere, you will need to measure hatch clearance on your vehicle. With front bar as far forward as it can go, you will need to have at least 57" of distance between the center of the front cross bar and the to the open hatch for this box to work.
