Quality Product, my 2nd pair in 4 years

If the price was lower, then I'd give this a 5-star rating. I lost one pole of my first pair, so I needed a new pair for stream crossings and more treacherous terrain on hikes. The new ones are almost identical to my old ones. The wrist sling, extended grip area, and index finger resting ledge are the best design for comfort. The locking mechanism is always reliable and easy to use. They fit in my luggage. They are durable and would probably endure under a much heavier person than myself. I used my old pair in rocky, slippery marine tidal zones and the metal pole has had minimal damage from these corrosive conditions. I bought a third pair, a gift for a friend, as I wanted them to have the best.

Great trekking poles

I bought the poles and immediately headed to Yosemite for a test drive. The were lightweight and compact enough to attach them to my backpack without notice yet strong and comfortable enough to get me to and from Nevada Falls without needing to readjust them and without blisters. The entire trail is pretty much stairs the whole way. They really did save the day! I continued to use one as a walking stick for my less strenuous hike around the valley floor and to Mariposa. They're definitely keepers.

The best for older trekkers!

I am very happy with my new Black Diamond trekking poles. The flip lock adjustments are a snap to use and the poles are sturdy and stable. The hand grips and straps are very comfortable. As a senior, 63, these poles give me the extra security I need while walking in town or hiking on the trails. I love them!!

The Shocks Shocked Me

I bought these for long, moderate to difficult leveled hikes. I will never forget how much I appreciated the use of these descending Longs in RMNP. The shocks are amazing and my knees felt like they could go forever. Another thing to note is these are easily adjustable and can be borrowed! I lent these to my mother and she loved adjusting these throughout the hike based on the terrain. The locks hold really well.

Very light and stable - no slips

This is my first pair of hiking poles - I got them ahead of doing the John Muir Trail (~220 miles) this summer. I took them out for a few shorter backpacking trips ahead of the trail and then used them throughout the JMT. They are fantastic poles, easy to adjust but the poles never slipped/collapsed at all over the course of the entire trail. I was worried the hand grips might feel a little gross after awhile but they actually were very comfortable and felt (and looked) less gross to me than my husband's poles with cork handles (which got stained black over time). Also for those who are hesitant about getting trekking poles as I was - I cannot be more of a convert! They help a lot to distribute weight a bit going uphill (you can get a little workout in your arms too and relieve your legs), but I was even more surprised by how much more quickly I could descend. I have a bit of vertigo and really slow down on steep declines, particularly over loose rocks, but having a couple additional balance points makes a huge difference. Every time I go on even a short hike and I decide to leave these behind, I regret it.

Where have these been all my life?!

These are the perfect Trekking poles! The shock-cushion is perfect. Not a noisy spring-system, not a huge amount of give, just enough to keep my wrists from feeling every jarring motion of planting the poles. I was worried the shock cushions would absorb too much energy as I was going uphill, but they don't. The lower grips on the shaft of the main pole section are below the shock mechanism so that's always an option, too. The flick locks work very well, and since their tightness is adjustable no slipping will ever happen (like my twist-lock poles did from day one). The L and R as far as I can tell mainly applies to how the hand strap is configured on each. They're each done so that the thicker portion of the strap goes around each hand's thumb. If the grips are different for each hand, I can't tell by sight or feel. These would be perfect if both ends of the strap could be adjusted. One end of the strap is fixed (the wider end) and can't be cinched closer to the handle (I'm 5'2" and have small hands/fingers), the thinner end of the strap can be tightened closer to the handle. The padding is comfortable and breathable as well. I'm neither young, nor old, but have bad knees and hyper-mobile ankles that have seen dozens of sprains. These trekking poles have made my knees happier with descents, and have saved my ankles from yet another sprain. I'll never go hiking without them!

Makes hiking so much easier

I used these for the first time on my recent hike to Pigeon Hill/Little Kennesaw Mountain trail. It was great having the extra stabilization going up and down the mountain. The trail was very rocky and having the poles helps prevent rolling ankles. I'm looking forward to my next hike.

Hiking poles

I have only used these 2 times, but am very happy to have the support while going up and down uneven terrain. The adjustable feature is a plus as my son borrowed them and said he wanted a pair. The handles are comfortable and the poles are so light. Easy to pack and carry when not using.

Essential on steep or unstable terrain

These pools are very sturdy with a comfortable grip. Downhill, they are most useful for steep grades or unstable terrain, like volcanic scree. I don't have much trouble with downhill typically, but Tongariro had some intense slippery slopes. I would plant one of this in and felt so much safer. Uphill, they help this slow uphill hiker keep a good pace going. I can use my arms to help hike. Well designed to stow when not in use. Never had any issues will collapsing, expanding, or resizing.. Do have some heft to them, but since the times when I'd most be worried about additional weight were the times I was using them, it's not a problem..
