Excellent tire for ...
Excellent tire for the cost, for commuting and training. Good for a century if you're not particular about weight. I'm about cost and functionality. At 200 lbs, I commute to work putting in about 4800 miles on the tires (the rear does wear sooner, so I alternate them). On weekends, I train on them from 20 to 50 miles, then use them for a century or dualthon race. They can be difficult to put on, but they're wire. I use three levers for better and more stable leverage and have not broken a wrench. For my budget and usage, they're perfect for me.
LOL.. the reviews panning this tire are laughable
---Since when.. does the tubed clincher get the blame for air loss failures?? "Ain't".. that the tubes job....? ---Flats.. are a primary function of the junk one travels over.. one can go thousands of miles sans a flat. You can ride and get several in a day. Glass.. et al.. more a function of the riders attention to road conditions. --Hard to mount?? C'mon.. maybe for someone who can only mount the sloppy dimestore tire.. the one that takes often forever to center running centered on a rim. That flavor tire is the most frustrating for those of us encountering the cheap nylon junk tires. NOW.. the Ultra Comp by 'Conti' is far and away the BEST value in a road tire.. they wear like iron and hold the road well. Rolling resistance testing shows this tire near the top of the charts against tires costing 2-3x. I run these 32mm on gravel trails.. which an experienced rider knows the 'so called' gravel tires offer NO advance w their shallow grooves... vs the thread design of the Ultra's. The new Ultra lll has more shoulder grooving also.
Good tire for the price
I got 476 miles on the rear tire before my first flat. A big cut through the shoulder of the tire. Not sure what caused it. I commute 60-90 miles a week. Road debris is the norm. So almost 500 miles without a flat isn't too bad. The tire handles well. It's reasonably light. At this point there isn't much wear. I'm expecting to get 2k miles out of it, but without a flat protection layer it may not work out. Still overall a great value.
Love em so far
Got these on sale over Memorial day. I have over 100 miles on them so far. I bought the 23 c's. So far so good. The rolling resistance is fine. Traction is good. They were a pain to get on so I am hoping they don't flat often. I cringed the other day as I rode over some glass but 3 days later they are fine.
Don't stand up to the tough
I bought a Continental mountain bike tire a while a ago and hated it. The tread didn't even last 6 months. I thought I'd give them a shot again with road tires. I just put a new set on my wife's bike. We rode the Oregon coast. She got 3 flats, 2 on the rear and one on the front. She had another flat just training before we left. It has good rolling resistance but not worth the flats. They are also very difficult to get on and off the rim. I broke a plastic lever on our last flat just 4 miles from our finish point.
Make your ride more comfortable
I've been riding Continental tires for several decades and prefer them for their ride quality and durability. The Ultra Sport series is an exceptional value and provides a ride superior to competing brands that cost more.
Works great for me
I read the other three reviews and these guys are having a different experience than I am having. I probably have 500 miles on my tires, haven't had a flat yet and rarely have to add air. No, they aren't the lightest tire but I'm not in any race I'm out for the exercise. I liked them so much, I saved the order number to buy again.
look somewhere else
Great if you are just rolling around on fair road conditions. However if you commute look somewhere else. Positives are that it rides very smooth and thats it. Cons: extremely difficult to put on and does not hold tire pressure well. After about 5 days of use it gave in.
Returning
Had more flats (2) in 5 mos time than 5 years on original tires. Get what you pay for I suppose. Exchanging for Gatorskins.
