first impressions - mostly great but not perfect

I'll admit I'm writing this after 2 mountain bike rides, but it worked so well that I wanted to share. I wore it once on a 10 mile pre-ride just to make sure everything worked. I was expecting to have to do a lot of adjusting, but with the exception of positioning the double front straps I never touched it. The 2nd ride was on a muddy and brutal 65 mile mountain bike race. Again, I was expecting to have to adjust something over the course of those many hours, but not once did I have to. Like other reviewers, I forgot it was there. It fits very well, and I had it full loaded: all 1.5L of water to begin (and several refills), my keys, phone, about a dozen gels/bars stuffed in the various pockets, and because the mountain conditions called for a fierce storm (that never materialized), I also stuffed a lightweight shell and an extra pair of wool socks (in ziplocs) for insurance (those clothes went in the bladder compartment). Yes, all of that was pretty tight for this minimalist pack, but it worked and I didn't have one issue with fit, rubbing, etc. It worked extremely well. I also have the Manta 28 hydration pack, and that works equally well for a larger/daypack arrangement with more capacity- much different design and features. This Rev 1.5 weighs about 1/3 of the Manta to begin with and I'd say that it fit better. I was interested how it would "ride" while I was cycling without the added stability of a waist strap - but again, this thing fit so comfortably it doesn't need that extra complication, weight or feature. And, you can't fill it so full so that you have something heavy to begin with. The bladder system with the "holster" and the quick connect also was great for quick refills. The magnetic bite valve is the feature I like the most on the Osprey packs and the 1.5 liters was able to get me to the next wilderness aid station no problem (approx 1.5 - 2.0 hours of cycling; I also had a 22 oz bottle on my bike). Some imperfections/needed improvements: -the digiflip phone pocket is good in concept but pretty poor in execution; like other reviewers have said, it's not even close to going to protect anything from liquid - including rain, your own sweat or even some mis-fires with drinking dribbling. Also, when you put something rigid in that pocket, the fit on that shoulder strap gets ruined, since that's the part of the strap that MOST needs to stay curved. I ended up putting the phone in a ziploc in the zippered compartment and use the digiflip pocket for a course map and extra gels. I guess it could of course work in some situations. I think conceptually and ergonomically the only flat place to put an easy-access phone pocket like that is across the chest (probably awkward too) or the waist belt (non-existent on this model). In the future if I don't need the extra pockets for gels, I'll likely just take that pocket off (luckily it's fully removable) - even on its own it's kind of bulky compared to how svelte the rest of the pack is. -I could only get the white color variation, and some parts of the white fabric permanently absorbed some of the copious mud we encountered on the race. Odd is the fact that some fabric washed completely clean, but the stretchy fabric got permanently stained. Why they don't offer the Rev in any darker colors that hide stains of all sorts is beyond me - all the colors are "look at me" bright. Finally, personal preference here - I'm a pocket person, and I wish I had just a little more built in organization, so I might try the Rev 6 . But I really wanted to get as minimal as I could, and this 1.5 model ended up being able to stretch to allow some extras I needed that I didn't think would work to begin with. I didn't even end up using the front panel bungee cord, which of course adds some extra capacity when needed (but having had stuff fall out and into a wheel when mountain biking, I'd only use that when running/hiking). Hope this helps. Would totally buy again. Another great Osprey pack and would give it an A+ for fit and an A- for design. -

Osprey Missed The Mark On This One...

It pains me to write such a poor review on a brand that I absolutely love, but this pack completely failed me. There is no arguing that the pack is aesthetically pleasing, and upon trying it on at home with the reservoir filled to its 1.5L capacity, the fit was perfect. As an avid trail runner, this pack seemed to be the ideal compact, minimalist running vest. But now the bad part.... Roughly halfway into a 10-mile trail run, on the packs maiden voyage, I began to feel water running down my back. At first, just a trickle, and then moments later, the flood gates opened. Somehow, the bladder on the inside had sprung a leak around the base where the hose attaches. It appeared the plastic that the bladder is made out of had worn down to the point where a hole, the size of a pinhead, had formed. I must reiterate, this occurred during the very first use of the pack. I must also add that previous to taking the pack out, I did a thorough check of the equipment, to ensure everything was in working order (out on the hot trails here in SoCal, H2O is a major lifeline). And, just to add insult to injury, the water that had leaked all over the inside of the pack caused the lime-green interior color to seep onto the outside of the pack, discoloring the grey exterior into a strange looking yellow/brownish color. To sum things up, this pack appeared to be incredibly sturdy, and because it was built by Osprey, I had only high expectations for its performance ability on rugged terrain. Perhaps I just purchased a lemon, but it's really hard to tell.. I'll be returning this pack and wont be buying another- I would hate for it to fail me again during a trail run or marathon. Unfortunately, Osprey may have missed the mark on this one, or perhaps I'm just unlucky.

Great running pack

I ran 10 miles with this pack this morning in pouring rain and it did great. My favorite thing about the pack is the phone case feature--my phone stayed dry (I wasn't sure until I got it out after the race) and I was able to look at messages during the run and it was easy to change songs when I needed to. I did feel the water swish around while I was running, but other than that, I didn't really feel the pack. It had enough room for me to carry an extra top, keys, and wallet and the chords on the back are perfect for stashing a rain jacket. Also the water reservoir works really well, super easy to fill. I'm so glad I had this with me.

Great bag, too small.

Osprey makes a great product, don't get me wrong. I was misinformed as I ordered this hydration pack online. I was looking for one that could be used as a mountain bike pack and day hike pack. Apparently the Rev 1.5 is for running, and its way too small for a large frame guy like myself (6.0 214lbs). So if you have broad shoulders and a built chest, this hydration pack will fit like a purse. If your a small-framed runner looking for hydration on the go, buy Osprey for sure. I returned this pack and bought a larger Osprey that was made for what I needed.

Great pack for kids!

Bought this for our 9 year old daughter to use while hiking and skiing. It is the perfect size, holds more than enough water for her and has a couple compartments to store bars and other necessities. Not a ton of storage, but that's to be expected in a pack this small. The phone compartment will be nice when she gets a little older and has a phone. Looks great and is perfect for her needs. The bladder is top notch, too. She loves the bite valve and the detachable lines make it easier to clean. We will definitely look at Osprey packs for future purchases!

Wanted to love it, but it LEAKS ... design flaw

This pack fits great, looks great and is easy to use. Unfortunately, the flaw it has is fatal. The inside water bag does not have a rubber gasket on the screw-top opening. The way the bag hangs stresses the seal. There is no way to screw the lid on tight enough to prevent leakage as a result of the jostling that naturally occurs during running. I tried every way I knew of to fill and adjust the lid securely. I always had a small amount of leakage. I can't lose my water on a long run, so "no go" for me. The built-in phone case is an amazing idea, but almost too small for my iPhone 6s. Needs work, Osprey.

I keep forgetting I'm wearing a pack ...

This is an excellent light, unobtrusive pack for a long trail run, even in hot, dry conditions. The bite valve is easy to use and draws water quickly; it also seals quickly so that there's no dripping. This is also the first hydration pack I've used with a magnet, so when I'm struggling over difficult terrain, I can spit out the valve and it will fall into its place on the chest strap. It's so much better than fiddling with a clip! The storage pocket is bigger than it looks--it'll hold wallet, keys, sunscreen, bug repellent, and other necessities like an epi-pen without having any trouble closing. The cord on the back is easily adjustable and will secure a second layer (up to a thick medium layer) without any struggle. There are front pockets on each side; on the left is space for a phone; my iphone 4 with its slim case fits easily; a thicker case might be more of a problem. On the left, there are two pockets to insert gel packs or other nutrition. I just finished a 90-minute trail run with this pack fully-loaded: full reservoir, phone, wallet, keys, sunscreen, benadryl, gu-packs, and an extra layer. Never once did I feel encumbered; in fact, aside from using the bite valve frequently, I often forgot I was carrying so much. The pack sits just right and doesn't move around or chafe. I might be spoiled now; this is my first pack since my 12-year-old camelbak, which was clumsy, and the straps would often rub and fray any technical or synthetic shirts. With only a full reservoir, my old camelbak felt like an albatross weighing me down during my runs. This Osprey pack is so much more comfortable and useful, and even when it's crammed full of stuff it feels light as a feather. I've only used this on pleasant or hot days so far--we don't get a lof of rain in Southern Colorado, so I can't speak to how dry the storage pocket stays. I could easily see the pocket holding extra hat and gloves, and I've already figured out that the bungee on the back can hold a down sweater or midlayer very easily for running on those snowy days. I love this pack!

Simple, light, and effective!

I have used this pack for about two months now and I personally find this a much better alternative to running with a hand bottle or waist pack. There is nearly no noticeable sloshing or shifting of water within bladder, even while sprinting. You can hear a little bit of sloshing if you’re not playing music. But with music on, I do not notice it. Speaking of music, I find the location for the phone to be very convenient. You can access and operate the touch screen through the protective plastic envelope without any problems. The construction, weight and fit are all very good. I have a somewhat bigger frame (5’10” and 185lbs) and think the fit is very comfortable. My longest run with the pack is a little over 12 miles and I hardly noticed wearing it. My only gripe is that I wish the mouthpiece flowed a bit more water. It’s a bit stingy. But this is a really nick picky complaint because it leaks NOTHING and the magnetic fastener on chest strap works very well. The bladder is easily removable. I like the quick disconnect at the top of the bladder from the line. You just disconnect, putt the bladder, fill, and reconnect. Storage is great. You can fit a lightweight running jacket inside the pack and the smaller pockets are plenty generous for gels, keys, wallet, whatever. Overall, I find it perfect for any run longer than 6 miles.

Great bag with a few glitches

Pros: First off, great bag. Fits snuggly against the back through the chest straps and lower back straps. Flip open cell pocket fits my iPhone 5 and allows you to run headphones out the pocket and it easily senses your touch. 3 pockets on shoulder straps for gu's/bars/etc, along with a small zippered pocket on the top of the pack. Reservoir is 1.5L, which is all I need for about 2-3 hrs. Cons: Lots of sloshing. When I run by myself I listen to my headphones, so not much of an issue, but it is fairly loud and took some getting used too. The reservoir sometimes doesn't thread on properly, which can cause the water to seep or even gush out. Just need to make sure it closes properly. When the bag gets wet, it seems that the grey bag's interior green will actually stain the outside grey. It's a trail bag, so I'm not overly concerned with some green in there but that may sway you to another color.

Simple and effective

Great pack for lite water usage. No issues after using it this summer. Easy on and off, filling is a breeze for both crushed ice and water. I actually add small weight plates from my bowflex selecttech wrapped in a towel to add weight to my exercises with no issues. I have broad shoulders and at first the pack was a bit tight as there is no XL size. I pinged customer service and they sent me larger straps right away at no cost which make it fit perfectly!

Great pack for short-moderate adventures

I bout this pack 9 months ago and its worked like a gem. I like taking it on my mountain bike excursions which generally are between 10-25 miles. The 51 oz load it carries is enough to handle those distances, however its pretty low when I take it on longer rides (obviously). The straps are easily adjustable and sit very comfortably across the chest and abdomen, right over the 2 top abs. I had an issue with the bit valve as i put a hole in it last month but after emailing the REI team they immediately sent me another free of charge. The only down side to this pack is there is only one pocket (which is fairly small, holds a snack keys and wallet) and the pouch for your phone can feel uncomfortable at times. Still a wonderful pack, definitely recommend it
