Owned this for over six months now and had it out in a wide variety of conditions from multiple nights of blasting winds at Iceberg Lake on Mt. Whitney to a night of consistent rain on saturated ground in Colorado, and every thing in between. In the wind it held up structurally and was plenty warm. In the rain, the bottom remained completely watertight even without a footprint. Incredibly light and very durable after at least six trips. Super easy to pitch as well. Great breathability and visibility without the rain fly, good warmth and rain coverage with it. Love this thing!
I purchased this tent in February of 2014. I have used it on three two-night backpacking outings so far. The first night was in a wind/rain storm (moderate) and the tent very performed well, no leaks at all. In general the tent is made of strong but very light weight material. I wanted a two person light weight tent specifically for backpacking and wanted to keep the weight to a minimum. It does weigh in as advertised. So far I am very pleased with the quality and performance. I can assemble it in less than 2 minutes without any issue. I did replace the tent stakes to shave off a couple more ounces and get something stronger.
I was struggling to find a tent that was comfortable yet light weight. I had already purchased a one man tent that was snug but light weight. Going thru Colo Springs store and spotted this one. Little expensive. More of a 1 1/2 man tent vs 2. Very light weight. Very roomy for me and my stuff. Made it thru 10 day Philmont trek with heavy rains, wind, hail, rocks and sticks. Fly doesn't come to the ground especially at the foot but wasn't an issue unless sleeping bag was up against it. Easy to set up, and easy to carry.
This tent is an excellent entrant in ultra-light 2/1 person backpacking. It set up easily, was roomy for one person plus gear and has plenty of ventilation. The main drawback for me was the fly. It does not cover the foot area of the tent well enough. Most mornings, the foot of my sleeping bag was more than moist. I believe with better coverage of the foot of the tent (maybe one or two ounces of materials) and possibly more coverage over the vestibules, this would be the best tent on the market for it's intended use. REI, don't mess with the tent...Just the fly!
I had to replace my REI quarter dome 2 and wanted someone with less weight (I'm pretty petite), so decided on the Dash2. I took it car camping (next weekend it goes backcountry) and was pretty impressed. LOVE the ultralight weight. I will definitely have an easier time carrying this tent. When I set the tent up in my house prior to leaving, not having to read the directions, set the tent up in like a minute... maybe! And the rainfly tacked on a few more seconds. I didn't notice the rainfly at the foot issue when I initially set it up and did not need to rainfly this weekend. I did notice the vestibules were small when I set it up inside and with all the rain GA gets, I am a little worried about the rainfly issue I've read complaints about as well as the vestibules being small. The zippers seem quiet. I don't normally stake my tents, but feel I need to with this one to maximize the space. The quarter dome 2 easily fit 2 adults and 2 big dogs inside and wanted to buy a 1 person tent to go lighter. My dog and I had PLENTY of room inside. I think 2 adults and 1 big dog will be fit comfortably/ cozy. Pros: super lightweight and extremely easy to set up! Roomy. Can easily sit up inside. The zippers are pretty quiet as well. Cons: vestibules small, need to stake it to maximize space.
I've used this tent on multiple short backpacking trips and really enjoyed how light is was. I really put it to the test on my Philmont trek (Itinerary #17), and it performed excellently! There was plenty of space (to sleep) for two people. I shared this tent with my dad. I used a Thermarest Z-lite and he used a Thermarest Neoair X-lite. With those two pads in the tent, there were a few inches between them. We supplemented the REI footprint with a fitted Tyvek footprint and the REI stakes with MSR mini Groundhogs which made the final weight about 3.1 pounds. The only flaw: the single wall construction on the foot of the tent causes condensation problems. Great ultralight tent by REI!
Due to age and other maladies, I've decided to migrate to ultra-light camping. I'm new to ultra-light camping so my views are from someone who is most familiar with 60+ lb packs and the associated (relatively heavy) equipment. I picked up this tent without my typical research on the day I left for a short camping trip. The tent is very light and seems like it will last for several years with the proper care. The interior space is small but when compared to other ultra-light tents it has the most space for its weight. The design is well thought out. The double doors, light loop, and gear pockets are nice features. We had a light rain one evening and everything stayed dry. My minor issues with this tent are: 1) The vestibule area is too small for my gear. Perhaps when I get an ultra-light pack and equipment I won't need as much space. 2) The tent is not free standing. This means that I will have to be more careful when selecting a camp site. 3) The stakes that come this tent are serviceable but for the price of this tent I would expect better stakes.
This really is a nice tent with many nice features. I like the roominess of it, plenty of space for my pooch and I plus can easily fit in my backpack. I expect two people would be comfortable in this. Very easy to set up. I didn't read the directions and got it set up in a short time. I'd previously tried the Big Agnes Fly Creek 2, but the sloping walls made that tent feel too closed in. This is soooo much better. I bought this tent for hiking the AT in late April to early June. Because of all the mesh, that the mesh is so low, plus that the vestibule fly does not reach the ground, it's very easy for the air to flow thru. Great for warmish weather. But, if the weather turns chilly, this is not a tent that you'll be able to heat up with your body heat. I recently had two cool/cold nights on the AT, one down to 40F, and dearly wished this tent didn't have so much mesh, etc. Word to the wise if you plan to use this for cool/cold spring or fall hiking.
This tent looks and feels great. The double doors and rainfly zippers make this tent feel roomy and never awkward to get in and out of. There is enough room inside for two sleeping pads to lie side by side comfortably, without pushing against the foot of the tent. The rainfly stakes out and creates lots of great ventilation. The lines are easy to tighten after you've staked them, which is important because in heavy dew, water will soak through if the fly is touching the tent wall. In conclusion, 10 out of 5, great tent!
I bought this tent a couple months ago and pitched it once I got home. I was not happy with the design of the rain fly. It seems to leave the foot of the tent exposed and does not allow much ventilation. The vestibules are very small and inside it felt very cramped. I owned REI's Quarter Dome UL for several years and I am used to the size of a compact lightweight 2 person tent. This Dash 2 tent feels like it's for 2 skinny people who don't mind rubbing shoulders in the night. I give it 3 stars because I never actually used it in the field... so perhaps it would function better than my first impression. For the price, I decided that the Quarter Dome 2 was a better fit and have given that one 5/5 stars.
