Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Love!...but the pockets aren't spectacular
I bought these shorts primarily to wear over my bike shorts while I was bikepacking the Arizona Trail. Though not designed for such things, they performed exactly as I'd hoped. Off the trail, they're my favorite shorts, except for one big flaw: the front pockets ride up as you walk, creating a rather unflattering profile. Patagonia makes a very similar short but they sew the pockets to the short body, making it impossible for the pockets to ride up. It would also be nice if the inner-waist tie were elastic and a little less bulky. Overall, though, I absolutely love these shorts and am considering getting a couple more pairs.
Shorts are great but have changed from 2015 model
I have two pair from 2015 and recently bought a pair now in 2016. They are still the same material but one thing that has changed is the sizing. The current size is now a bit smaller then the same size from last year. I do not think the fabric stretches that much! The waist band is snugger then the 2015 pairs and the length of the legs are shorter and the legs are cut more narrower then the 2015 pairs. I also really love these shorts for the lightweightness and pockets but just felt I had to comment that the size 4 from 2015 and the size from 2016 have changed to smaller size 4. I too wish the color selection included black and navy . I thought asphalt was a black but it is not.
Love these shorts!
After a lot of returning of Sahara shorts and pants I finally bought this model. If you have hips start with these and order a size up. They have some stretch so fit great, look good, not too short and looked much better on me than than the Sahara which have no stretch and are more suited to someone without hips.
Tight fit for curvy women
Great fabric, secure closure, good length. Pretty tight on the legs and bum for any lady that has a curvy figure. I always have a hard time finding bottoms that fit waist without belt (why I like these shorts with the drawstring) and fitting my booty. If you like tight fit, these will work for you, if you like something looser and have curves, these won't be a great option for you.
FAVORITE shorts
They are the BEST. They fit nicely - loose enough for climbing or hiking and somewhat forgiving if your weight fluctuates. They have an inner drawstring (at least my two pairs do, I bought them years ago) so you can make sure they stay up if your waist is small. I wear mine all the time for casual weekends, camping, traveling, climbing, and hiking. They are light and breathable but not so thin to make you feel exposed. They pack down nicely so they are ideal for backpacking and traveling. I only own the asphalt color so I can't speak about the khaki pair.
favorite shorts of all time
fabric is perfect; slightly stretchy but not too stretchy. the length is perfect, everything about these is perfect. the pockets aren't bulky. size down; i usually wear a 16, but they were too big - a 14 fit perfectly. i wish they came in more colors. i bought the grey and they are the only shorts i have worn all summer. i have to do laundry almost daily because the grey is sold out in my size. i would have bought 2 more pair i love them that much.
Not what I was looking for...
I am 5'7" tall, 152lbs, bought a size 14 based on previous reviews. Bought these shorts hoping they would be nice for casual wear around town or out for an evening. Wasn't really impressed with them. Did not like the overall fit. Not sure a 12 would have been a better fit. Thought about keeping them, but decided to return.
Absolutely great fit!
I love the fit of these! I was looking for another pair of hiking shorts so that I didn't wear out my Columbia Saturday Trail shorts, which were my favorite. These may become my new favorite. The fit is so similar to the current Columbia sizing, that I would buy the same size with confidence if you have a pair of Columbia. I was a little nervous about buying online, but am glad I did. I laid the shorts out and compared them on top of each other, and they were nearly identical, though the REI Northway is just a tad bit shorter, which is probably a better length. At 5'5", my Columbia's hit me at mid-knee, and these hit just above. The nice bonus with these shorts is that they do have the internal drawstring, which can be helpful after a day with a pack on and sweating out water weight. My true waist and hips are 28-1/2 and 38-1/2 respectively, and the fit of the size 8 is absolutely perfect. The pockets are nice and deep, which is handy for carrying a phone (plenty of room for an iPhone 6).
Comfortable Stretchy Fabric
The fabric has lots of stretch for comfort but looks substantial. Lots of practical pockets which are subtle in appearance. The hips and waist are contoured to not create either a gaping effect or a boxy look. Very versatile shorts with good length.
Stay cool and dry
The Northway Shorts are lightweight and fit true to size. They are so comfortable and have 5 discretely placed pockets that the shorts can be worn as dress shorts. I only wish I had purchased more while they were available.
