Great for mountaineering
I bought this insulation to go with my Platypus Big Zip (http://www.rei.com/product/851503/camelbak-antidote-thermal-control-kit). I signed up for a mountaineering class and I was worried about the hose freezing when we were hiking up mountains in freezing weather. This insulation has been great so far. I have never had the hose freeze on a day trip, even when we have been hiking well above the snow line, in cold, rainy, windy, and/or snowy conditions. It did freeze when I left it out in my tent overnight while snow camping, but I suspect this problem could be solved by detaching and emptying the hose and storing in my sleeping bag overnight.
Works better than other insulated tubes
I bought this tube for a XC ski trip where temps dipped into the single digits with minus 15 wind chills. My partner had a different manufacturer's hydration pack with an insulated tube. The first time we went to take a drink, his tube was completely frozen. My bite valve had started to freeze but I could still pass water thru mine. I ended up putting the bite valve covered end inside my fleece to offer some protection from the cold and high winds. This did the trick to keep the bite value working. Water in the tube never froze. My partner's hydration system was unusable the entire time, so lucky thing that I took my 3 L bladder with me for both of us to drink!!
Leaks out.
I bought this for hiking and backpacking thinking it would give it some insulation protection but that part is fine, the problem is with its mouth piece. So after about six months it started to leak. I packed the night before a hike and the next morning i noticed a wet spot on the floor and half my bladder leaked on while I had the hose elevated up. Another time, I packed up for a simi winter trip down to Havasupai falls in November with temps down to the low 20's and went to grab my pack out of the trunk and my whole water bladder leaked out on all of my gear though this hose. I had the hose elevated, but for got to push the water back into the bladder. This hose would be awesome if it had a shut off valve so it wont leak.
Doesn't Fit Well On The H.A.W.G. NV
I live in a tropical climate and ride a dirtbike. The thermal control is nice. While the first drink of water is still hot, the insulation keeps the rest of the water in the tube cool. Though, the best thing about this item is that it keeps my bite valve from getting caked in dust. The problem I have with the design is that it does not fit well on my HAWG NV. The protective bite cover doesn't fit through all the tie-downs and is difficult to get through most of the openings. The clasp on the shoulder straps is too small for the insulated hose. I'm not sure if the negative review should be attributed to the design of this item or the HAWG. But it seems like Camelbak should design their accessories to work better with their packs.
I'd buy it 4 times
I've purchased 3. One for me, the girlfriend, and best friend. I will never use the stock blue hose again. I use this for summer and winter to regulate water temp and so far no complaints. While camping in temps below freezing I prefer to drink from my hydro flask at night in my tent and use this as a back up.... Hasn't failed me yet where as the standard naked blue hoses have. They ice over. That being said, I have not camped for days on end below freezing but I would imagine this will do okay? If you're doing wicked cold camping for a long time you should probably have a hydro flask or some other means of keeping your water warm. This works great for what I do and like I said... Bought 3 and everyone is happy. The extra girth still feeds through all my packs with water reservoir pouches so I say go for it! For $20? Oh yeah
Still Ices Up
Went hiking Christmas day, it was 20 degrees at the trail head and the bite valve froze solid within minutes. Not a good thing to happen. Not sure what Camelbak considers the temperture range for this item, but the original tube that comes with the Antidote system is good down to 25-32 degrees. I just assumed the Thermal Unit would be good well below freezing; bad assumption.
Perfect for my altitude study
I'm doing a heart failure altitude study on Kilimanjaro & one of the things I have to measure is my hydration. Camelbak has made it easy with this Flow Meter. I especially like the insulated tube, it's the same tube we use for winter mountaineering & is essential.
Works as advertised
After years of being frustrated by frozen tubes, I bought a Thermal Control Kit. First time out, the temp was barely out of the single digits and I had no problems slurping water while kick gliding for 2 hours.
Works ok, but free alternative available
It works, but I found that if I just blow into the tube when I'm done it clears the water out back into the bladder and keeps it just a cool.
Thermal hose
I love it , it's stiffer and more rugged for my needs while blazing trails
