Beautifully-engineered. Pleasure to ride
I was a little concerned when I realized I was going to be pulling about half my body-weight behind my bike. But the smooth engineering of this product made it fun and easy. The hills were a challenge (as expected), but the fact that my daughter could pedal made a surprisingly measurable difference. She was a little timid at first, but she quickly overcame that and now loves to ride her bike. I have also noticed that the experience on the trailer bike has translated into more confidence on her small, individual bike. She is not ready to lose the training wheels yet, but she definitely has more stability, etc. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to take family bike rides with smaller "big kids" who can't keep up on their little bikes.
Great ride.
I use this product for my 3 year old she cannot keep up on her bike on family rides. So we got this as the Ibert we used was getting challenging. The attachement is straight forward to the towing bike seat post and using the supplied tools, very easy following the Sales associates tips and advice, tighten the bolts a little at a time in a diagonal pattern to prevent binding. The attachemt of the "trailer" was simple and secure. Adjusting the seat and handlebars, again witht he supplied tools was easy to get a great fit that is comfortable for my daughter. On the road it is heavy, but I noticed it as much as towing anything behind a bike? Had to mention but adding the weight of your child also makes it heavy. Really like it and can't wait for her to start pedalling/get on her own bike in a few years.
Sturdy, safe, easy to use tandem trailer
My son has been riding with me on a tandem trailer since he was 4 -- old enough to safely hold the handlebars and be stable through turns and bumps. We replaced our old trailer with the Afterburner 2.0 because it seemed very strong (safe) and the hitch attachment easy to use and extremely secure. I have not been disappointed -- it's been just what I wanted and we are happily riding to school together and doing longer rides on- and off-road when we have time. My son is almost 6 now and we've done rides longer than an hour without any problems. My only minor complaints are the trailer's weight and the cost ($40) for a second seatpost hitch, so I don't have to unbolt the hitch receiver when I switch bikes. Overall, this is a great trailer and very well worth the price.
Well engineered, very reliable and convenient piec
This is a very well engineered piece. I use it to ride with my 5 yr old kid. Being made of steel, it's on the heavy side. But with the overbuilt locks and brackets, I feel it's a good tradeoff for the safety assurance. It has some nice features like a mud fender on the front to protect the little one's face from the mud and little rocks from the rear wheel.
A lot of fun
I love the "wheees" of my grandkids and the fun looks from neighbors as we ride around the neighborhood. Sometimes the seat post bracket on my bike shifts causing the Afterburner to tilt slightly, but other than it works great and is easy to get on and off, and to store. I hang it from a hook in my garage and fold up the neck so that I don't hit my head on it. It's a noticable help when the kids pedal helping to propel the whole tandem along.
Solid Bike Trailer
Very solid design. Much more stable (i.e. not a lot of left/right wobble) than the other trailer bike I had tried.
Great for taking kids on longer (or shorter) rides
Things I like: - Assembly tools are included (especially since the wheel requires a wrench for removal), - Attachment and pivot point is solid but quick and easy. - Folds to fit in our small trunk - Back passenger is able to help on hills and in the wind. It is noticeable when they are peddling, though it isn't going to be like they are not there. - My son loves it Things I don't like: - rear fender - there is none! Any wetness or muck on the route and he back is covered. With the dimensions and arrangement of the bike it is also difficult to get an after-market one to fit. Warnings: - It does take some practice for both riders to figure out how to work as a team, but usually progress comes quickly. But it is better to start small and work up. - This has improved my son's balance on a bike, his comfort on a bike, and his understanding of how to move around on bicycle it is not directly applicable to riding his own bike. The differences in balancing yourself and being in control of the steering are large. Good thing is that he really enjoys it, bad thing is that he is not too interested in taking the leap to his own bike. - Connection to the adult's bike should be done carefully for correct fit. Make sure that your post is compatable. I find that slow turns (with little pulling force) cause my seatpost or the connection to twist out of alignment (my son is also at the higher end of the weight allowance). No danger, but we do have to stop to reset it. - Front fender - good idea to protect the kid from spray of the adult's rear wheel, but size and placement are a little off and he still gets a good amount of spray. We have him wear glasses while riding
Seat post doesn't fit poor and poor quality
When we bought the Novara Afterburner for our 4 year old, we were quite excited to get it and try it. When I tried to hook it up to my bike, the adapter that attaches to the seat post didn't work. My seat post was too narrow. I tried attaching it to my wife's bike, and same problem. While I could get it to work by wrapping the post with some rubber, I didn't feel comfortable with the connection. If this were the end of the problems I wouldn't be giving it a one star review. I thought maybe I could install the bike on the seat post below the bolt where it is thicker so I took it off and rolled it back into my garage. While doing this I could feel the wheel binding. Checking on it, something inside the pedals was binding and I could no longer turn the pedals without a lot of force. So off to REI for a return. I'm sad, it looked like it had a lot of potential.
Great for my girl!
My daughter is finally enjoying biking! She is tall however, and I wish the pedals were a little higher from the ground.
Excellent purchase
Very happy with it. My 4.5 years old loves it. I would highly recommend it.
