It's a Unique and Fun Helmet to Wear.
I have had the chance to ride a few hundred miles with the Giro Air Attack Shield and it’s a keeper. I love the look, and the Zeiss shield provides impressive crystal clear vision—much clearer than sunglasses with a large panoramic field of vision, and without anything hanging on your nose. Picture a tinted window on a convertible. I would not have purchased this helmet if it did not come in High Visibility Yellow or Yellow for the crowded cities that I ride in. More than a few motorists have pulled up to thank me for helping them to notice me. I will tell you that when I first took it out of the box upon delivery, I almost returned it immediately because it’s a heavy helmet compared to the Spec Prevail I have been riding with the past 1.5 years. I weighed them both (see pics) and the Giro is 4.5 oz heavier. If you subtract out the average weight of bike sunglasses (.7 oz), the net weight gain is less than 4 oz. The Zeiss shield weighs 1.2 oz. It is really the strong magnets on both the shield and the helmet receptacles that accounts for much of the added weight. It appears to be a very solid well-made helmet that hopefully I will never have to test in real life. No Specifications came in the box for the Zeiss Vision Shield so I wrote to Giro for details. I was concerned about the Shield UV protection primarily. They responded immediately: “The Shield is made of high-quality polycarbonate by Zeiss Optics, and offers the same performance as the best sunglass lenses in the world. The lens blocks UVA / UVB / and UVC up to 400nm (the harmful radiation).” This satisfied me. I also looked into getting a back-up or replacement shield and Giro sells them direct at a very modest cost. The shield is easy to clean by running under the tap water and then using a clean soft cotton cloth to dry it. It does not seem to scratch easily thus far. The tint is strong enough to prevent squinting and I was able to glance at the sun with no issues. If you are okay with average tint you will be fine, riders that like very dark/mirror tint may find this shield too light. I think it’s just right. The shield has minimal glare in sunlight, and as mentioned before—the clarity of vision makes up for it ten fold. You can ride without the shield at night or cloudy days and save weight. My photos show how the shield can be inverted and firmly attached to the front of the helmet. As far as stability and wind resistance—The shield is going nowhere and will not come off or move—The strong magnets hold it firm in the engaged position or head position. I tested it a number of times in strong crosswinds downhill at over 30 MPH and it never flinched. You need two hands to remove it. I did notice though that at least on my face, at speeds over 25 MPH downhill, there were swirls of wind that came under the shield to the eyes. It was just mildly annoying and only occurred in that situation. When I used glasses on this same exact mountain downhill they blocked the wind better from the eye. You may also gain better aerodynamics with the shield defecting the wind, but I could not test that objectively. Giro uses a standard web chin strap adjustment that is not my favorite, but I was able to get it set for my head and face per their instructions in approximately an hour at home in the mirror with lots of trial and error. The straps have been very comfortable. I always wear a liner under my helmets for optimal fit and comfort and that helps a lot with the Air Attack Shield because otherwise the rear plastic slider would dig uncomfortably into my head. This helmet does not have a lot of vent holes but it was still comfortable in blasting hot Southern California beach sun with temps at 80+ degrees. After removing the helmet there was very little/no perspiration on the liner or my head. The helmet complies with U.S. CPSC Safety Standards. However, it is Not certified by Snell as some cyclists prefer. In sum, it is a fun helmet to wear with the face shield—the biggest selling point and the only reason I wanted to add it my equipment. I guess you have to decide if you are willing to take on a bit of weight to lose the glasses, improve your vision, and wear a cool state-of-the-art cycling shield design helmet that few people have yet.
Awesome helmut, but........
This helmet is everything they say it is but the eye shield expands and contracts with the weather as it is a type of plastic. When it expands on mine the center magnet dislodges and rattles when you hit a bump. Took me awhile to figure this out. Thought it was my bike at first. The shield is great other than that, crystal clear optics! For the price they charge they should include a pouch for at lease the lens if not both. I had to use an old ski goggle pouch to store the lens and I swiped my kids ski helmet pouch for this helmet!
Excellent Versatile Choice
The Giro Air Attack Shield Bike Helmet by Giro is a super choice for cyclists seeking a balance between aero performance and adequate ventilation. The helmet's profile is a bit smaller than even my old Bell Sweep R, resulting in better balance and a high degree of comfort, even on longer rides.
My grandma what strong magnets you have!
I let my 4 year old wander around the house after he insisted in strapping on the helmet with the shield. Well, after wandering into the kitchen, things got pretty quiet and I jumped up to investigate. There was he, stuck to the fridge by the magnets that hold the shield to the helmet, quietly and determinedly struggling to free himself. I was prohibited, on pain of a weekend with my mother-in-law, from posting a picture of him attached to the icebox. As for the helmet and shield, they do a passable job keeping the wind from whipping at my eyes. This is the perfect price point for racers in spandex bib shorts who roll up on their carbon bikes at Starbucks to order their caramel lattes. And because the helmet only comes with a dark shield, it's great for sunny days, which should come with the helmet. I want one in all black so we can look more stormtroopey. No other concerns than that we pedestrian cycle tourists have no means by which to attach a brim to keep the roaring sun off our sun scorched necks. Meanwhile, I can't relegate my $50 helmet to the gear museum--it only needs for me to find a face shield at the Harley shop that I can attach with zip ties. Also, when is someone gonna make a helmet to accommodate the man bun?
Returned it.
First of all, I am an avid triathlete. I've done three ironman, and seven ironman 70.3 races. I wanted to try this out to minimize neck torque and not worry about dropping my sunglasses in the middle of transition. The helmet is light and very sturdy. The two flaws that take the two stars away are: 1. The shield hit my nose not allowing me to breath, I couldn't picture myself biking 112 miles pushing the helmet backwards every 30 seconds. 2. The Roc Loc knob is very small and hard to turn, again making it very difficult to adjust, especially during race day. Come on Giro, my little girls helmet has a better Roc loc knob than this. Consider the Rudy boost 01, uvex edareo.
Air attack
Bought on sale didn't get the color I wanted but still happy. Quality and finish as you would expect. Knob adjuster in rear is small and hard to adjust on the fly with gloves on. I wear glasses and it took some adjusting to keep the glasses from hitting the lens but I'm used to it now. I have a big fat head and this fits properly but looks like it sits a bit high. Helmet took some miles before I forgot it was on the Mellon so I recommend it but I have other helmets with better features for a lot less money. The cool factor of the lenses are worth it.
Great helmet
The things I like about this helmet: * I can wear my normal glasses * There is less wind noise in my ears than with any other helmets I have owned * There is no sudden change in windage/force on my head & neck when I look around at high speed The helmet is slightly warmer than helmets with lots of vents, but not excessively so. The vents are very well designed. The smoke-colored visor that comes with the red & black helmet is good for bright sun and in a pinch provides adequate visibility at night. A clear visor is much better at night though, and also on dim Northwest winter days. -1 star because one of the little magnets on my visor came off. After a while I realized it had stuck onto one of the other magnets. I was relieved I had not lost it. Now I check the magnets whenever I take the visor off. I would subtract one star from REI's rating if it were possible for not carrying other visors. Anyone who rides at night or in dim daylight conditions will want a clear or yellow visor.
Helmet fits quite well.
I bought this helmet a few weeks ago and have used it on several rides so far. For the most part the helmet fits great and has a great feel. The shield however could be a little lower, it does not fully protect the eyes without having the bottom of the helmet over by eyebrows. It is a very lightweight helmet and looks great. The straps adjust easily allowing for extra head coverings when weather calls for them.
Shield easy to scratch
Overall the Helmet does not make me go any faster....and the shield is funky. The shield does not center on the nose but pinches my left nostril, so I only breath with my right nostril when I wear this helmet. On my first ride the shield fell off and got scratched really bad. Not a good experience. Not sure if it is worth the $240. REI does not have any replacement shields, not sure how to get one.
Great Helmet
One of the magnets was broken. Manufacturer sent out a clear shield and promises to send a replacement for the smoke shield. I love the concept and would not want any other helmet.
