Sublime
This review is not necessarily about the fuel, the fuel is fine, but is more about alcohol stoves in general. I love alcohol stoves. They are such a superior experience compared to the mini-jet engines I had used before. Every stove prior made me nervous, were loud and smelly, and felt like an invasion to many of the settings I visited. Not alcohol stoves. They are quiet, odorless, and incredibly compact. If all you do with your stove is boil water (which is my main use), you don't need the supreme power of other stoves. Just light the alcohol, sit back, and enjoy the setting. Sublime.
Great Fuel for alcohol stove
I have used this fuel for a couple of months now for my Swedish Trangia Alcohol Backpacking stove. It is a great fuel that works very well with my stove, quiet and very clean. Did not sooth my pots at all. REI should start selling the Trangia alcohol stoves.
Soda anyone?
Alcohol and the homemade stoves they provide fuel for are great. The first time you make a stove to correspond with this REI product it's intimidating, but so rewarding. This fuel product in a homemade stove, with a steel or titanium cup to boil water for a dehydrated meal is excellent. It will make you happy. K.I.S.S.
Solving the Pouring Issue
I've read the many reviews stating poor design pouring from the Crown Alcohol Stove Fuel can. This type of can is used for many other types of solvents, stripers, etc... It's an industry standard. The problem is not with the can, but with the execution of the pour. Most will pour having the can spout toward the bottom. Doing it this way, you have the weight and pressure of the fuel pushing down which does not allow good air flow in causing a vacuum which results in the fuel having gushing surges. The correct way, is to pour having the spout toward the top which allows proper air flow for even pouring. Additionally, it is more difficult to pour from a large opening to a smaller opening...lets say to a plastic Vargo fuel container. Best to use a small funnel when filling fuel container. On an other note, someone mentioned using Everclear. This is ethyl alcohol (or ethanol) which comes in 120, 151, 189, and 190 proof. Yes, makes great fuel! But very expensive because of Federal Government regulations as it is...well drinking alcohol, Camp stove fuel only has 20-30% ethanol and 60-75% methanol, which is wood alcohol (which is poisonous to drink), and other ingredients are isopropanol and methyl isobutyl ketone. HEET, in the yellow bottle is 100% methanol (very inexpensive and 100% poisonous, not recommended nesting in you cooking pot). Ethanol burns only slightly hotter than methanol. Don't use isopropyl alcohol as it burns a yellow flame and leaves soot. You want a clean blue flame.
You cant go wrong with this purchase.
Excellent fuel for cooking. It burns clean without residual effects. What impressed me the most was the way it cooks evenly just like denatured alcohol. I am very pleased with the purchase and will be buying more in in the near future. One more thing, I can"t cook, but the flame that this thing provides along with the right pan, your breakfast or lunch will taste great no matter what. Just make sure you have salt and pepper.
Exactly Perfect Alcohol Stove Fuel
I see other reviews about this splashing when pouring, but that is just from holding the can wrong. If you pour by holding the can with the opening up or on its side, there is no splashing. Pouring with the spout in the lowest position means there is no way for air to enter the can without "glugging." Burns perfectly clean, bottom of my stove still looks brand new has zero soot after a dozen uses. Grateful to find it at REI because no other retailers near me carry it.
Clean burning, Solid container
Great fuel for alcohol stoves. Clean burning, dries quickly. The container closure is tight and doesn't leak.
Lits very well
No smell, nice fire, exactly what I needed. One thing is that the bottle is not suited for pouring, had to change is into water bottle for convenient pouring.
light weight cooking
I've used this brand for more than 8 years. It appears to be the most readily available in quart cans. It is reliable and not too expensive although the price has almost doubled in the last 7-8 years. I made and use pepsi can alcohol stoves for year round cooking from sea level 10K feet +. If you use alcohol stoves this is the way to go.
It burns
Burns clean. Was able to light it in cold weather by warming it up inside my jacket. The only knock that I have is the container. It is difficult to pour out of and always dribbles a bit of fuel when filling the containers that I take with me.
