Has given our lab many more years of life.

Our lab is now 15yrs old. He's 85lbs and has led a very active and healthy life. (Holistic food/vitamins, etc.) We started noticing the first signs of aging when he was 9. He would need a head-start to get in the car, couldn't jump over things he once did, and by the time he was 10- we began to notice pain and discomfort on his hips at night from jumping out of the car (took us a while to figure out why he was stiff and in pain). We travel often (by car) and we also live on a third floor. My husband found this harness at REI and we decided to give it a try. It's been almost 5yrs now--we would have had to put him to down if not for this harness. It helps us get him in and out of our SUV (with the use of a 2-step latter for pets)- We had to train him at first, as he was nervous about using the steps. We also provide support on the front when going down any steps and we give him a little extra support on his hips when going up steps. We don't worry about him falling, or loosing his balance, as the harness has support on the front and on the back. This harness has also allowed us to help him through some "tough" easy hikes as he can't jump over certain rocks or tree trunks anymore. He can still get up and sit down on his own, but the harness also let's us help him get up on mornings where he's a little stiff (arthritis). This harness helps us take care of his hips by not allowing overuse (getting in the car, jumping out, falling, etc). He is now so used to having it that he waits for us at the top of the stairs to help him down- he appreciates the little extra support on the back him when going up, and the front support while going down. I don't know what we would have done without this harness. We definitely would not be able to travel with him in the car; go up to our 3rd floor apartment, walk through the woods; visit friends who also have stairs, etc. We highly recommended this harness to any senior-dog that is still active, engaged, ready to explore but needs a little "cane" support to make things easier. Also, if you buy a seatbelt tether attachment, you can use it on a car seat to prevent the dog from falling off the seat during abrupt stops. --I've washed it in the washer (let air dry) many times and it still looks new. Thanks Ruffwear for giving our dog (still strong) so many more years of life.

Best K-9 Harness

This product integrates well with K-9 packs. The handle is well balanced for easy lifting. D-ring is sturdy enough for rope hoisting and lowering. Dogs cannot back out or slip out. Does not impede movement when swimming.

Great, durable, and safe!

I bought this product because I have an extremely skittish dog. Terrified of everything (she is a rescue, we are working on it) and I found that normal harnesses/collars were no match for her, as she has a broad chest and just scoots backwards right out of other harnesses and takes off - which is a huge safety hazard. The back strap on this harness sits behind her rib cage which prevents it from sliding off like your normal harness. I also needed something I could lift her with as she is 70+ lbs. This does the trick! We have had many the vet and groomer visits go SO well because once she realizes the harness is inescapable, she tends to calm down. When she decides she isn't going to walk through a door, or down a hallway that looks scary the handle on the back is incredibly useful. It supports her well enough that I feel good carrying her the odd few feet without worrying about squishing her tummy or pressing on her oddly. Maybe not the "intended" use, but a life save to us nonetheless!

Houdini-proof harness

One of my dogs, a border collie, would make lightning-fast escapes from whatever harness I had tried whenever she saw something interesting on her walks. She has been using the Ruff Wear harness for about a year now, and she hasn't escaped once. She also seems to walk a little more proudly in her cool-looking harness.

going to buy another one

Alway worried about dog backing out of harness. This harness is easy to put on. He cannot back out of it. Seems he is comfortable with it on. He hikes, runs, walks and I use it in the car to hook to the seat belt. Like the handle if I need to get him closer to me. No pulling on the neck. Washs easily in the wash machine. Will be buying another for my other mini husky as soon as his girth reaches 22".

Great for long hikes

Great for both my girls! I have a small dachshund mix and a medium sized husky/shepherd mix and it has been a great purchase for both. Me and my husband are climbers, and for week long or even short day trips we want to have our dogs along with us. The webmaster is super well built. the handle is great for assisting dogs over obstacles. Unlike most harnesses it has one across the chest and one just below the chest so both our dogs are well supported when lowered or lifted. It also has two connection points for the leash. I love the way it doesn't shift around even when they are pulling hard. Arie always has a little extra prance to her step when she has her harness on.

Keeps my houdini dog secured

I got this for my dog who was limping badly, and I didn't want to take the chance of jerking her neck around in case it was nerve-related. Also, she is dog-aggressive and tends to do wild flips when we are out on a walk and she sees another dog; I wanted a better measure of control in emergencies. Third, she tends to escape from everything except her martingale collar (including previous harnesses), so I needed an escape-proof harness. This harness fits the bill. The loop for the leash attachment is on the top of the back, completely taking the neck out of the picture. She does pull a bit more now, but we are working on that. There is a handy "handle" at the top of the harness which I believe is meant to help lift your dog in climbing/rugged situations. I find it very handy for restraining her when she starts doing her wild flips! I also used the handle to help her along a few times when she was limping particularly badly (she is not limping anymore). Lastly and most importantly, she CANNOT escape this harness (she has tried!). She can back out of anything (as previously mentioned) but this thing is very secure (but still lightweight, and from what I can tell, comfortable). Great product!

I made the correct choice!

I'm so glad I bought this harness as opposed to others I had seen! We live in a tropical country at the moment, so it is important that it does not make our very active dog feel hot. I am pleased to see that it is not heavy at all and it stays dry at all times. The fit was also perfect, no abrasions on his skin at all, and it was really easy to put on. At first, he felt uncomfortable with it because he had never worn one, but now he forgets about it. We washed it a couple of times and it comes out of the washer nearly dry. This harness is really well made and if you want something light and sturdy, this is it!

this item is fantastic, it's a comfortable easy fit, my boys absolutely love it. Great for long walks or hiking. My only complaint is that it only comes in red. Would like to see more colors.

Good design

Everything about this harness is great except the durability of the top connection point. We've hiked less than 10 miles with our do and the cordura or whatever material the loop holding the d ring is, is already showing significant signs of wear.
