By far the best
I'm an avid traveler (seem to always pick the mosquito-infested, malaria endemic locations) and an outdoorswoman. Unfortunately, mosquitos love me, so I've spent years sampling various repellants. I stay away from DEET products altogether. I tended to purchase natural, oil-based products but they were greasy, intense smelling, and absorbed by clothing & furniture. I tried Natrapel for the first time last year and I cannot rave enough about it. It's non-greasy, easy to apply, has a moderately intense scent (but nothing I can't get used to), and I've never been bitten while wearing. I also found that it works all day. However, during the muggy east coast summers, if I sweat a lot, I have to reapply once more during the day. I'm so glad REI is selling in a larger size spray bottle this season.
A brilliant greaseless, nontoxic alternative
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Natrapel 12-hour pump, with 20% picaridin listed as the primary insect repellent component, is almost colorless, odorless and greaseless that easily washes off afterwards with plain soap and water. During our 10-hour wooded terrain hike, the easy to apply picaridin Natrapel spray, which released a fine mist at any angle eliminating the hassle of rubbing, remained efficient against a wide variety of biting insects throughout our lengthy activity (as picaridin is not waterproof, the only time a reapplication deemed necessary was after the kids went swimming.) In all, a great choice that is nonirritating, nontoxic and remarkably effective.
Actually repels
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] An insect repellent that actually works! I sprayed some in my hands and applied the repellent to the areas of exposed skin; washed hands immediately afterwards as instructed. I like that it is clothing safe, but I didn't feel I needed to apply any to my clothes. I was outside in my garden for a while and then went for a walk at farm park where there are a ton of flying insects that bite. When I came home, I noticed not a single bite on my legs. It's nice to know that this product can last 12 hours should I need it that long. It has a really strong smell initially, when I was outside I didn't notice it after a while. Overall, an effective product!
Works and doesn't burn
I'm a mosquito magnet; I've used this stuff from Florida swamp to the WA rainforest, and I'll pick this every time over any alternative. It works and doesn't hurt. Besides melting plastics, DEET makes my skin burn. Picaridin does neither and is as effective. Don't just take my word for it, though - go ahead and search "Picaridin vs. DEET."
Excellent!
Don't know why, but I am a proven mosquito magnet. They can't resist me, and until now the ONLY product that works is DEET. Then I went to Panama for lots of early morning and evening bird wathching in mosquito heavy areas. The Picaradin worked as well as DEET, and of course, it's so much nicer to use!
this works
In empiric tests of frequency of mosquito bites, picaridin was equally effective as DEET. Since I find DEET unpleasant on my skin but can't tell that picaridin is there, since DEET is neurotoxic while picaridin is not, I really prefer picaridin.
Part of my mosquito avoidance kit now
We play in the Sierras year-round. I am one of those "mosquito magnets". My husband barely gets any attention if I'm around. Until this season, I've treated my long-sleeve shirts and full pants with Permethrin (Sawyer) and exposed skin with a very small amount of 3M Ultrathon (33% DEET). I cannot recall when I've been bit when wearing the Ultrathon. I *always* have it with me (repackaged in a teeny bottle). Trick is to use very little, so I don't get that DEET "taste"... Based on reports and comments from trusted friends, I tried this Natrapel spray earlier this year for the first time. I tried applying it to my exposed skin. The smell at first was sweet and pleasant, then within minutes I thought it was too perfumy and cloying. I also could "taste" the product in my mouth after applying to my face and fingers. Note that I sprayed my fingers and then patted my skin, I did not spray directly on my face. A breeze may have blown some onto my face, but it lasted an awfully long time. I've read that Picaridin is odorless. I wish they hadn't added so much scent to this product. Almost immediately we were in a heavy bug zone. The little devils seemed to come closer than they did with the Ultrathon, but they didn't bite. But I was hating the smell. When the Permethrin-treated clothing wasn't working (this has been a problem for the past few years), I used the Natrapel spray on my clothes in hot spots where they were biting me. This worked! (Can't do that with DEET-based products.) On that trip, I was forced back to DEET on my skin after the Natrapel wore off (after about 5 hours???).. the 3M Ultrathon lasted the rest of the day. I can use so little of the Ultrathon and get great results. And with such a sparing application, I don't "taste" the DEET. This left me less-than-whelmed with Picaridin on my skin. I just returned from the worst mosquitoes I've encountered this year and figure I'm lucky to have escaped with a dozen bites over two days and 33 miles going in and out of mosquito zones. Until I find better, my protection is now: Permethrin-sprayed clothing, 3M Ultrathon on face and fingers, Natrapel sprayed on clothing hot-spots: gloves, arms, shoulders and hips. Sea-to-Summit mosquito headnet when they were so thick and stubborn they were flying into my mouth, nose, glasses. Biggest downside: I have to use so much Natrapel spray that the volume and weight adds up for longer trips. The Ultrathon repackaged in a tiny bottle can last me weeks and weighs nothing by comparison. Note: I bought the bigger Natrapel bottle and used it to refill the small one to take on trips.
Too heavily scented
Works well to repel mosquitos. But it is heavily scented, so even with it only on your arms and neck, you smell like you have been doused in cheap perfume! And the scent persists for days if you put it on your clothes! Suggest using the Sawyer picaridin product - which does not come in the 1 ounce size.
Works great, not gross!!
I've been using this regularly while hiking and camping for a few years, and there's nothing I dislike about it. For it to work, I've found you have to squirt some on and then rub it over the entire area you wish to protect. It doesn't take much, and you don't feel gross or sticky when it's on, except maybe on the palms of your hands. You can watch as the mosquitoes touch down on your skin and then immediately take off again, they never pause to think about it. I rub it on my clothing and hair, too. I hate mosquitoes and can't be comfortable sitting still if I see even 1, but this stuff allows me to relax!
Scary directions
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I read the directions for use of this product. It really scared me to apply it on my kids. I have used it on myself only. I sprayed my legs and used my hands to spread it evenly. The smell is not pleasant, but it is not the worst. What made my concern was that I couldn't get it off of my hands even after washing them with warm water and soup repeatedly.
