Great Addition to our Camp Set-Up

We bought this screen house in the summer of 2011 and have used it several times. We did not like the fly REI offered. After doing some searching on-line, we found that the L.L. Bean fly sold for its screen house would fit this one. We ordered from L.L. Bean (free shipping) and sure enough, it fits great. We now have a screen house set-up that can be closed in on all sides when we leave camp during the day and at night. It is not totally bug-proof because we go in and out and we don't install the floor, but almost. No see-um net works great. We had to add addition staking during a wind storm in West Yellowstone. Winds were 20+ mph and one side of the screen house was taking a direct hit. It caved in some until we added additional stakes and opened the fly on two sides to let air through. If you're interested in the L.L. Bean fly, check measurements for current version to make sure it will fit REI's.

Biggest thing at Wonder Lake

Last year, we drove up to Alaska as our last big hurrah before our baby came. I had read and heard of the horror stories of the mosquitoes, and knowing we were going to be in a tent for pretty much all of this trip, I wanted a place where we could be sheltered from those blood suckers. It worked very well for this purpose as we used it pretty much every night for a month. During many rainstorms, we were able to stay dry while reading a book, cooking dinner, etc. with the optional rain fly. However, while at Wonder Lake, a storm with some pretty good winds (rain coming in at about a 30-degree angle) came through that had soaked one side of the mesh wall. This turned that side into a sail (the wind would no longer breathe through the pores of the "wettened" mesh), and even though the shelter was properly staked (we had a good amount of practice since then), the wind kept wanting to collapse it like how one would break down a cardboard box. That day was the only problem we had with it; I'm sure that if we had faced the rain fly to face the wind, this may have not been a problem.

The perfect multi-purpose screen house

This was the star product of our recent trip. You have to be somewhat crazy to take a back country camping trip to Assateague Island, MD in the summer is because of the sheer volume of mosquitoes on the island. This tent was a savior and safe haven from the all the bugs. Set-up and take down took maybe 3 minutes max, it was super lightweight and could easily fit over a picnic table with plenty of room on either side to walk around. It felt roomy and spacious, the zippers moved like butter and there were some nice pockets in the side to stash some gear. We also took this to the beach and were again impressed with the versatility of the tent. It provided ample shade and even with a strong breeze it felt study when staked it in the sand. Overall, a stellar product from REI that could be used for a million different things.

Great shelter

Only used once so far, but quality seems good. Build in the grass and then carried to rock picnic table area and lifted over the table without issue. Light wind and rain over the weekend was not an issue. I updated the stakes with Groundhogs just in case. Bad weather was predicted but never hit. Screens on two opposing side open completely and store in a pocket nicely. During the day we left them open to easily enter and exit the shelter. Wish shelter poles had a bag for storage. They do give you a pole repair sleeve which was nice. I expect many bug free south Florida trips with this shelter.

Kept the bug at bay

We used this screen tent on a trip to Grand Lake Co over the 4th of July. Set up was straight forward and you could move it fully assembled with 2-3 people. I would suggest you do stake it firmly at all points and use the guy ropes to ensure no wind issues. But it provided a bug free enclosure during evening card games at the picnic table. As for the overall interior size, a standard park picnic table will fit with little room to spare. We had no issues with the zippers and do look forward to using it for family gatherings in the backyard. They were sold out of the rain fly, and we didn't have any rain, so the jury is still out on that aspect. I may fashion a DIY rain fly out of a large tarp before the next trip.

so-so until some bad weather

I've used this screen house for a specific family trip for 4 years, one time a year. I've been fortunate to have camped in good weather. And, in good weather conditions the shelter worked. As other have commented, it is a bit cramped, and the zippers are not the best. I experienced some "bad" weather on this year's trip and one tent pole failed. After "fixing" the pole with the supplied repair piece, the other pole failed... I wouldn't characterize the weather as particularly "bad". Shelters of other makes happily rode out the storm with no ill effects. Currently, I need to decide whether to have the poles repaired or buy a new shelter - not another Screen House.

screen house rocks

I took this on a 4 day canoe trip (swan lakes in AK) with my sons' scout troop. We used it as our tent at night and cook hut in the day time. I really like it , but didn't like the fly and did not get the rei fly as my friend did, I found a different one that fits well and I will use until rei makes one with four sides like the one I found, we stayed dry and happy while my friend was praying the rain would not change directions. We did not care about the rain or wind and slept great with one adult and 5 teenage boys all in the screen house.

Not as good as the previous model

I bought one of these in the late 1990s, and it served exceptionally well for the past 20 years, including multiple weeks each summer in my patio. Eventually the sun took its toll, and I didn't think twice when shopping for a replacement. Unfortunately, the new model has one critical difference from the old: instead of three clips along each pole, there are now two. This makes the entire structure extremely flimsy: when I threw a tarp over the top it nearly collapsed. With the old model I rarely set guy lines or stakes; with this one I had to, and this morning (after a frontal passage) learned that they don't do much.

Good, but not great.

I'm very pleased with the screen house. It is well designed and built. I like that it sets up with poles like a tent, and packs down into a small package when storing. My only concern (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars), when I set this up over a picnic table, you have to be careful not to tear the mesh on the table as it slides around during setup. I've been careful, but I still have a couple of small wear spots in the mesh. Hopefully these will not develop into tears.

Sturdy and well built

We bought this to put on our deck. It is sturdy and well built. It does not keep out rain but it is strong enough to withstand a downpour. We have had several thunderstorms since we put it up and there was no problem. Our deck is somewhat sheltered and we have it tied to the railing. I love how open it is and we can still enjoy the view of the trees. Air flow is OK but we have put a strong floor fan inside to increase it. I wish one or two of the roof panels were clear so we could see more of the sky though I know that would interfere with how much shade is offered. I know our neighbors bought something similar and it collapsed during one of our storms. It was a different brand that cost about half as much as ours. We are happy with our purchase.
