Figured out what to do with the bottom strap
Finally figured out how to use the strap on the bottom of the stool. At first we though it was for keeping tension on the bottom of the legs to keep them from spreading. But the loop was too big and there was no way to shorten it. The strap is for keeping the stool legs close for storage. To use the strap hold the closed stool in your left hand. Hold the loop/tab of the strap in your right hand. The section of the strap with the "loop" part of the hook and loop fastener should be facing you. The hook part should be on the back side of the strap. Now just wrap the strap away from you. You should be able to wrap it twice around the legs. On the second wrap the hook part of the strap should land on the loop part. It's easy, just watch the video.

Older versions were much better
Had the older REI version of this little stool and loved it, but after almost 10 years of use, the seat posts have started to wear through. For $13, it easily exceeded expectations and was a no-brainer in picking up another one. Boy was I wrong and have a lot of gripes about this newer, more expensive version. For starters, it's not nearly as comfortable as the seat posts are much more pronounced than before. The fabrics seem cheaper and far less substantial. Second issue are the leg support straps. They are absolutely useless. When sitting in the seat, the legs are suppose to expand out until those straps are taught garnering further support and stability. Instead they just hang there loosely offering none of the footing support they used to have. Previously instead of just a strap, there was a triangular piece that offered far superior leg support along with a handy shelf to store small items. I knew this when purchasing, but it's still a bummer nonetheless. The strap on the newer version also doubles as it's tie-down/packing strap having now been relocated from the top, to the bottom of the stool. The relocation makes no sense as now the stool has big "bunny ears" where the seat is making it less packable. REIs branded products use to be quality products engineered for quality and with functionality that its customers wanted. I don't see how any bit of this design follows anything other than to cut corners for cheaper build costs and then sold for twice as much. If this is any reflection on REIs other branded products, then they've gone seriously downhill. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unfortunately, this is the lightest weight travel stool out there.

Pretty solid field chair. Impressed.

Pretty decent chair overall. I’m 6’2” and 240 lbs and it’s held up so far. Pretty light weight and packs out easy.

So light, I live this little stool!

I love this stool. As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate having a place to sit when I stop for a break. This little stool is just the trick and weighs almost nothing. The only complaint I have is that the web strap at the bottom is too long and looks sloppy laying on the ground when using the stool, and seems too long when wrapping it up. I made one alteration by unstitching the web strap to possibly use on something else, and replacing it with a piece on bungee I had laying around.

Best camping stool for the money

I teach at a wilderness camp in Canada and as part of a program I run campers can "earn" one of these stools. Our campers go on extremely complicated canoe trips and these stools have held up to rigorous use. I've probably given out over 50 of these stools over the years (yes I know REI should be giving me a huge discount on them). They are also lightweight and when you are talking about long portages (over a mile) weight is a consideration. This stool is both rugged and comfortable. Take it from someone who has "tried" over 50 of them. For the money get this stool. No need to buy those very expensive versions unless you really like to overspend.

nifty little thing

This little trail stool is awesome! I originaly bought it to keep up off the ground in tick season but since then it has been a constant companion on many adventures; usually clipped to the back of my pack hanging down like a tail behind me. I don't even notice it until I wanna take a 5. Then I just pop it down and thats that. I've also found good use for this thing from doing camp chores to taking a break behind work. Anytime I want a seat its sitting in my car waiting. On camping or backpacking trips you cant beat it... poof instant seat.

lightweight and works well!

I bought this trail stool to use while I do landscape photography. it is light enough/compact to easily strap to my camera backpack (Lowepro ProTrekker AW400). It works well for sitting on to rest while taking pictures, but I also got it to use as a small table to rest my camera bag on if I dont want to set it on the wet/muddy/snowy ground. it isnt the most stable for that, considering it is meant for your butt to sit on, but in a pinch, you can use it as a temporary table. The velcro strap used to hold the legs together while it is closed is nice. All-in-all it is a nice little (somewhat dual purpose) trail stool.

You will be glad you packed them

Great value (what you get for what you pay); Will get used much more around a backpacking camp than you might expect (keep tent poles out of the dirt while you pitch your tent; put on or take off hiking boots; visit; complete a camp chore). Face any of three directions without moving camp stool. Very quick to set up and fold up. Easy and light to tote. Set small objects in fabric triangle below seat (keeps things out of the dirt and easy to find).

Lightweight, Super Convenient Chair

Overall this trail stool has been pretty fantastic. It folds up very neatly and is easy to store inside a backpack or strapped to the sides. Works on uneven surfaces and is pretty comfortable for short periods of time. Great to keep in the car/RV/closet for an extra chair in an emergency. The only complaint I have is that the structural integrity of the plastic feet is a bit shoddy. One of mine split right down the seam and I had to epoxy it back together. The other two have held steady even with my weight (200lbs).

my son has sat in this daily this summer !

My son is living in my home for the summer for an internship and I had this stool in my closet to use possible birdwatching or traveling ( I’m 59 ) so wanted a lightweight thug to use in emergencies traveling etc . My son lies to smoke to “ relax “ after work ( yep that type ) but I want no smell in my house so he is usually in my garage for several hours on this stool ! It has help up remarkably well w his 200 lb body ! I cannot believe I only paid 22.50! I’m here to buy another as I am gonna gift him the old one . If you’re here just buy it ! I promise you’ll never regret it ! It’s super lightweight and sturdy
