NASTY
I carried this for a couple years, just in case I needed it. Last month I lost all my water due to the failure of my water containers, so I really, really needed it!!!It is very difficult to use with my medium strength hands, and the taste of iodine is so amazingly strong that IT MAKES ME GAG AND THROW UP! I was in 100 degree heat in Utah, and had a tiny amount of water from this thing that I couldn't drink. I had to make a very hasty retreat back to civilization, cutting my excursion very short. This is a NASTY PRODUCT, as throwing up when you have no water makes the situation even worse!!!
Really convenient
This lets me stay out hiking through creeks all day with just lunch. I carry it in empty and then just fill from the stream I'm fishing and I have cold water all day. It has to be primed at first use in the morning and I let the first few oz out without drinking. The water tastes fine. I was concerned when the order of the filter parts changed and the carbon filter was no longer on top to filter out the iodine but I don't taste the iodine at all. I've bought these from before Katadyn bought the company and have been pleased with everything except drying out the filter parts.
No Pumping, No Waiting
I've been using this with the ExStream XR bottle for over a year. It is great because it really lightens my load while backpacking. You can refill it with fresh, cold water at a stream crossing and you're good to go. You don't have to sit and pump or wait for tablets to dissolve. It's true that you have to squeeze the bottle to drive the water through, and the flow rate is no fire hose. Sometimes an iodine taste can be present, which to mean means it's time to renew. Regardless, this is a great product if you know water will be available. Carry less weight!
Poor value and performance for the money
I am mid-weight packer and adventurer and have an older Extreme XR bottle system, similar to the new Mybottle. Originally bought this bottle on sale for less than $35 at REI. Tried it out extensively while packing in and around Oklahoma back country during hot summer months and some solo stuff out in the Olympics. It does work and filters great even from relatively stagnant water. Be careful not to separate the individual pieces or you could defeat the sterilization process. The day before your trip, need to saturate the components in clean water to reactivate the elements if dry. It is not useful for filtering water for cooking, cleaning, etc. For the cost I would rather, use the Katadyn hiker system and with a Platypus 3L bag. May be a good all in one system for the ultralight purist.
Works just fine
I travel to 3rd world countries where there is a dirth of potable water. This has been great for my needs and has often kept me from using my hosts' scant potable water supply. The only awkward thing is that patience is required since it is necessary to squeeze the bottle and the flow, as mentioned before, is not large. I haven't any complaint about the taste; it seems ok to me.
