Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good at first, bad at last Worked fine at first; after several trips, I replaced the filter unit (it looked like it developed cracks). It then leaked through the back pressure outlet, even with tap water. Then, the center O-ring frayed (non-replaceable), but it still worked so-so. Then, with a filter only used for several trips, the filter developed cracks, letting though everything, leaving it useless to purify on a backpacking trip. So a filter that cost [$] worked for perhaps 10 liters. Then, I had to beg for water purification tablets. What seemed at first like a great filter has turned into a worthless weight to carry. I am still looking for a decent filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely fantastic! I have had my eye on this product for quite awhile. After doing extensive research into various filter methods and brands, I chose the SweetWater filter. I'm happy I did. During a 3 day backpacking trip deep into Rocky Mountain National Park, this filter performed flawlessly for the needs of me and my fiance. The rest of our group struggled with their own methods of filtering, due to low ability to filter water at a reasonable volume, and concerns of contamination. By using the SweetWater, we were able to filter more than enough water for cooking and hydration, and the ease of use and assembly were flawless. I highly recommend this product. Well done MSR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent customer service Used extensively for 5-6 years. Always worked well, with good flows. No concerns of filtering capacity. As with others, filters bacteria/protozoa. If virus a concern, need chemical treatment as well. This is just phyics and biology. Storage recommendation is to keep in freezer to prevent bacterial overgrowth, but I have not done this without problems. Customer service is where MSR/Cascade Designs shines. Noticed cracks in central piston recently. Returned to Cascade Designs after reasonably fast response to my email. Unit replaced-I would have considered this expected wear and tear. I'm only out one-way postage. This response is what ill keep me returning to MSR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just replaced cartridge after 15 years! I love this filter and this company! I bought my Sweetwater filter 15 years ago and used it a bunch in my 20s. It went into the closet the past 10 years (grad school followed by a baby) and I just was able to buy a replacement cartridge that fits the model I bought 15 years go and now it works like new! Unfortunately the pin that connects the pump handle to the filter just broke. But I called up Cascade Designs and got a hold of someone immediately who said he would ship out a new pin to me for free. I am a fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best pump I've owned To all those who have trouble with silt: coffee filters! I have used this in some of the siltiest waters in the Southwest (Paria Canyon for example) and have never had a problem. By wrapping a disposable coffee filter around the inlet, you can filter out most of the very fine sand. This filter has served me well for 4+ years despite pumping from some very questionable water sources.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable and easy to use This water filter works great as an integral part of my backpacking gear. It is lightweight, reliable, and easy to maintain. I wish they had thought of a way to keep the tubes for the filtered and unfilterd water separate after filtering. However, I've worked out a system for myself using separate ditty bags for the tubes, and I'd definitely buy the product again because it is simple to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flawless for a year now I have used this filter on all my backpacking trips in the last year or so, around 30 days total. I also use the paper prefilter. Isle Royale, Michigan UP, southern Illinois and New Mexico are places it has been used. All have water with high amounts of algae and silt except maybe NM. The filter has performed great! Replacing the prefilter and field cleaning on rare occasions has kept me with fresh great tasting water through all my trips. The filter gets cleaned after trips every time. Mine was purchased on the recommendation of a friend who has used his since they first came out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truster friend for years I've had the Sweetwater system for many, many, years (15 or more?) and it has been reliable, if not always perfect. Sure, it'll start to squirt out the top from time to time, but you have to clean it and pay attention to what the water quality is like. Here's a tip - glacial water is full of microscopic-particulates and will clog your filters fast. Here’s another one – Try digging a hole in a sandy area along side of a river and letting it fill with water. Pumping from this stilling well will filter out a lot of the suspended sediments that show up when pumping directly from a river.
