Love.

I've been using these almost daily for about three years. They are still perfect, just perfect - and I don't baby them. The design of the rack clips is ingenious: I never tire of marveling at how precisely and effortlessly they work. I teach so they carry books and papers - small but heavy loads. Weekends, they haul groceries, kid's stuff, you name it. The top closure has in fact been perfectly waterproof all this time. The reflective patches are really reflective. What else can I say? I hesitate sometimes to drop this much $$ on something that seems like a luxury, but these bags - they're worth it.

Tough as nails for everyday use

I've been using a pair of these bags every weekday for over five years on a front lowrider rack and they are one of the best, most durable items I have ever purchased. My bike is my primary commute vehicle no matter what the season so they have seen rain, wind, sun, you name it between here and work. One bag did develop a tiny hole I have had to patch only because it came off the rack in a collision and slid 20 or 30 feet down the sidewalk. A single Park self stick tube patch covered the micro hole nicely and I was back in business.

Excellent Waterproof panniers

I have now been using these for six years for daily commuting. In the summer on long bicycle touring trips they are demoted to front panniers. In the winter, they get to ride on the back of the bike keeping everything dry. Some may find the front panniers too small, but I find them very adaptable and they get heavy usage. If you need larger panniers, go for the back rollers (or any of the other Ortlieb panniers that meet your needs). These ones I find are a good compromise and get heavy usage as a result (in the summer I travel with non-waterproof panniers on the back). When I finally had to replace my old panniers, there was no question as to what I would do - I am now on my second pair of these. Highly recommended.

Why did I wait to buy these?

I had another brand of panniers. I had purchased them over 15 years ago. They were nominally water resistant when I got them, with sort of a spray applied kind of waterproofing. At the time, I was looking for panniers that looked a bit like mini-backpacking packs, and these had external pockets. They also had a hook and bungie attachment method. Having spent some money on them, I wanted to get my use out of them. Fast forward to today, I realized that I was always shoving things into thick plastic bags before putting them in my panniers. Also, the hook and bungie system was resulting in a lot of panniers falling off. I went to look at these Ortliebs and I was immediately sold. The anchoring system is fully adjustable and gives a positive connection over your racks top bar. Even if they become unhooked below, they won't pop off your bike. I am able to mount these on the front rack on either of my bikes and the rear rack on the one. I know Ortlieb makes bigger panniers, but I find that, beyond a certain point, more bag space for me just means more junk I don't need. These would not work with racks that don't have a tubular top support (e.g., Blackburn Lowrider). They work just fine with my Jannd low-rider type front rack. They've held up well in my testing period and I am very pleased with my purchase.

Front Panniers

I bought these panniers a couple of days prior to a 400 mile bicycle trip through Quebec and NH. The fit on the bike frame was excellent and nothing moved no matter how bad the road was. We did have some driving rain and everything stayed perfectly dry. By adding these panniers I was able to better balance my load making handling much better and the ride much nicer.

Perfect Size

Well constructed, attention to detail, and perfect size for intended use. I have an English Audax Sport Tourer which actually rides better and offers more stability with the front roller classics, attached to my low rider racks.(6 pounds a bag is plenty) Flexible, when grocery shopping I can carry light, odd shaped items, with the top open or roll them up and they are completely waterproof. This works well in Tampa, Fl. downpours. The yellow and black provides good visability and looks great on my medium blue bike. These with my backroller classics and ultimate classic handlebar bag, are "a gracious plenty." I wouldn't want to carry much more than this. The only design flaw, I do not like the way the shoulder strap, attaches to the retaining clip, on the outside of the bag. I can always remove the strap and stow it away. Overall, I am very pleased.

Would buy again

I have the Back Roller Classics & have been using them every day for a couple of years. Love the waterproof & durability. The inside pockets are huge. Bought the Front Rollers to go on a decent camping trip from Eugene, Or to Blue River, Or. All four bags are great for light touring or commuting. Suggest something bigger for longer rides.

Son of Best Pannier Ever.

Ok, full disclosure: I own these panniers, but have never actually used them. But I have a very intimate relationship with my set of Ortlieb Backroller panniers, which I love dearly. These are basically the same thing, only smaller and designed for front-use. The Backrollers are awesome. I didn't use these for my tour because I fit everything into the back panniers, although it's still a good idea to use both. They are durable, stylish, absolutely watertight and they won't let you down while touring. Ortlieb = awesome.

OK smaller panniers

I purchased these for touring. I like the smaller size. I tend to overpack, and I need a strict upper limit on pannier space in order to force myself to pare down the load. I love touring with both front and rear panniers because my Surly LHT handles much better with a distributed load. The panniers both have two flat pockets inside at the back, which are nice for carrying things such as papers, a magazine or a thin book. I add a zip-top bag for small items such as my flat kit and have no trouble with organization. I also like the reflective panels on the sides, which show up really well in the dark. These panniers are nice and waterproof as advertised. An added bonus is that the waterproof exterior doesn't collect dirt or grime. The tradeoff is that they take longer to open and close when I want something out of the bag. When attached properly, they are very secure at the top of the rack. However, I really have to pay attention to make sure that both hooks are latched on correctly. I've also had trouble finding a good position for the bottom hook on both my front and rear Tubus racks. I can make it secure, or easy to put on and off, but not both. If the bottom latch is not secure, the pannier will flop around on bumps and compromise stability. Sometimes I think that I'm the only cyclist in the world who is not in love with these panniers. They're OK, but I'm not sure that I would purchase them again. I don't use them often for commuting because I am concerned about wear and tear; I don't get the feeling that the fabric will stand up to lots of bumps and scrapes.
