These are the most comfortable hiking boots I've worn, and the Vibram Arctic Grip outsoles are incredible, I hiked multiple 14ers in winter conditions and they held up great with one very significant flaw, I wound up in situations where I was postholing in snow a couple of times, and it was consistently the case that the laces would pop off the shoes' hooks and I'd wind up with snow inside the boot. Really awful when it happened. When I went out with gaiters I had no issues, but I don't know that I would repurchase these due to this happening multiple times. If you aren't trekking through deep snow these are the most breathable, comfortable out of the box hiking boots I've ever worn, and the grip is insane, I've never needed to wear Microspikes with these boots, even on treacherous icy terrain. They're also great with snowshoes.
I recently purchased a pair of Merrell boots, which I was eager to try. Their appearance was quite appealing, but unfortunately, they failed to meet my expectations in terms of quality. During their first real test in a snowstorm, I discovered that they were not properly sealed, resulting in my feet getting wet.

Need a pair of boots for a trip to Northern MN, and these fit the bill perfectly. They handled the snow, ice and mud with warm dry socks the entire time. They also are stylish and fashionable. Highly recommend
So far so good. I use those shoes to run with my dogs in the snow! They are very light and give me great stability for my ankles. The grip is good and they stay warm! I do hope they last for a couple of seasons
These sneakers are warm! I've not yet really tried out how water-proof they are yet, but I appreciate the insulation. I like the design overall, but would really appreciate minimizing the name of the company as it really detracts from the overall design. I would also suggest that requests for reviews occur six months after purchase, so that longer term experience can be logged.
unfortunately both me and my partner got these boots at the same time and both of us experienced a failure in the gortech liner on multiple occasions. I personally took these through both cold snowfall and melting and in both cases any snow that was on the toebox had melted right into the shoe. This was unfortunate because every aspect of this boot is amazing however if you wanted to use these for backpacking like be in winter consider a more reliable options. As I was returning these the REI rep mentioned that I wasn't the first person to complain about quality issues.
I have a question for the folks at Merrell - I have snow in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada and have started hiking with these boots but am confused by the orange metal eyelets. They are placed very low compared to the metal hooks and other eyelets - their position makes synching the laces impossible. If you pull up on the laces, you can not tighten them through the last set of round metal eyelets before the large orange metal eyelet. Am I doing something wrong to properly take advantage of lacing up with laces going through the orange metal eyelets? For now I had to remove the laces from the orange metal eyelets and at least now I can synch every section of lace properly from the toe up through the top 2 sets of metal hooks. Please provide some feedback on the intended function of the orange metal eyelets. You also state in your description the following: "Merrell's best mid warmth boot option for winter days out on the trail" - does this mean they are not your warmest boot or that they are your warmest? I would like to come back and rate these again after a year of use. I hike in -40 degree weather (C & F) and generally boots crack at the sides of the forefoot. I have many Merrell boots and shoes. These fit a half size larger than the others - where normally I am a size 10 in a Merrell, I would have a better fit in these in a 9.5 mens.
I work in package delivery, which means a lot of time outdoors and walking up to about 150 front porches each day. When the weather is cold, these are my go to work boot (in rainy weather I use the Agility Peak 5 Zero). In sub freezing temperatures these boots are marvelous. My feet are always perfectly warm. The sole is particularly grippy, perfect for slippery wooden porch steps. This “boot” is as lightweight and comfy as athletic shoes while offering great protection. I feel no urge to take it off at the end of a 10 hour shift.
That's fantastic! Thank you for sharing your feedback.
These were rated well by a hiking magazine, and they did not disappoint. I spent an entire day in 5 inches of snow and ice. My feet were warm and dry all day. I am 65 years old and wanted something that made walking on ice feel more stable. The Vibram sole says it is designed for walking on ice and I have to say the performance walking on ice is nothing short of amazing. Add in the fact these are lightweight and almost as comfortable as a pair of sneakers and I cannot recommend them enough.
I obviously haven't worn these yet in the snow, since it's October... However I am looking forward to trying them out. I am VERY particular when it comes to a lot of my products. I've been looking to replace my boots for a few years, but haven't found anything up to the standard I want. These have Primaloft, GTX & Vibram. They are also very lightweight... Everything I want in a winter boot. Also, the colour is really cool. It stands out amongst everything else out there.
We're delighted that you're enjoying our shoes!
