Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Sole is coming apart a few weeks after I got them and REI is giving me the run around
I ordered these shoes after trying to find a replacement for my favorite solomans that were falling apart. They have a wider toe box and fit true to size. I wear 13s and have wide feet and these are by far the most comfortable shoes right out of the box that i've worn while hiking. I don't have a ton of miles on these but so far I love them. I think I'm done with solomans. Try these if you have wide feet.
I was looking for a fully waterproof alternative to the Lone Peaks, and these seemed to be the closest match. Pros: Waterproofing – I walked through wet grass, and my feet stayed completely dry. Durable Rubber – The rubber feels more robust than on the Lone Peaks, which should hopefully mean better long-term wear. Excellent Grip – The traction is impressive, offering solid footing. Cons: Pressure Points – There are two hotspots on the top of the foot where the stitching below the second eyelets sits over a gusset made from stiff fabric. This combination creates pressure points when the laces are tightened. It’s manageable if I keep the laces somewhat loose, but that’s not ideal. Toe Spring – Like many running shoes, these have a pronounced toe spring, which may aid in running. However, I was looking for a more natural, flatter shape. Too much cushion - just a matter of preference, but I prefer a bit less material under the foot
I have worn Altras almost religiously for 8 years. Have done 3 thru hikes with them. Decided to give the waterproof ones a try. While I initially liked them for snow and cold hiking, the heel foam wore through incredibly quickly and caused rubbing that turned to cuts. Maybe put 100 miles in them before this happened. Have heard from an REI staff member that Altra shoes only last now about 200ish miles when a few years ago I could get 600 out of them relatively easy. Don’t know if it’s just this specific shoe or a trend, but hopefully this was just an opinion rather than a fact.
these shoes are great I teach pe and all different surfaces my only issue is the insert isn't comfortable like the road shoes
I wanted to do an update on these shoes I have had the shoes for 6 months now and I have put close to 800 miles they are finally done I teach pe and I put my shoes through everything on top of going hiking in them as well
like the fit even more so than the non GTX version
