Who says chilaquiles are just for breakfast?
They call these "anytime chilaquiles," so I ate mine for lunch despite them typically being a breakfast meal. I enjoyed them during a beautiful hike through the woods on the first day of spring. It was very quick to rehydrate, used only one cup of water, and tasted delicious! The eggs and cheese didn't make a strong appearance to me, but the black beans, verde sauce, and tortillas really shone through. It was a filling, satisfying meal and was not so high in sodium like many backpacking meals are. It's high in protein, and the consistency was fantastic to boot! I have nothing bad to say about this one. I'll be adding this to my stash of grab-n-go backpacking meals I keep on hand for both outings and emergencies. It's hands-down one of the best dehydrated breakfasts I can remember having, and I look forward to trying other offerings from Itacate!
Too mushy
I appreciate that cooking time is only 5 minutes. That's helpful when you're in high altitude places, cold and ready for bed. I'm an avid chilaquiles lover (and cook), and was excited to try this recipe. It was ok. The main flavors that stood out for me were the tomatillo salsa and beans. I wasn't able to distinguish any egg bits or flavor, which I was hoping for. The overall texture was too mushy and not aesthetically pleasing for me. However, I'm aware that backpacking, dehydrated meals are challenging to have pleasing texture and look.
Packable, Lightweight, and Tasty Anytime Meal
These chilaquiles are great tasting, whether on the trail or in camp, and are one of the best dehydrated meals I have come across. The flavor is excellent and well-balanced. Also, the packaging and pouch size is well thought out--both highly packable and extremely lightweight. The packaging and size are so good that it might have impacted the tortilla chips being a bit more crumbled and broken then one might expect. However, the flavor and taste was still great, and I will definitely seek out this meal in the future. Also, one caveat, and why this meal did not receive 5 stars--package says "tomatillo salsa" but I was hard-pressed to find tomatillos in the listed ingredients.
Not the best, even by camp standards
Received a free product in exchange for an honest review. I really, really, really, really wanted to like this *vegetarian* Mexican-style camp meal. The chilaquiles was simultaneously bland, mushy, and soggy. Yes, it provided sustenance through calories, but it was not a pleasant experience. Too cold for camping, so tested it at home. On the plus side, preparation was easy and the instructions were clear. Based on flavor and texture, I would not use this product again. Had a similar experience with this brand’s Arroz con Leche - easy prep, but not a great finished product. Followed the instructions exactly, but rice did not fully rehydrate and left hard lil nuggets. Chia was a nice touch, but overall wayyyyyy too sweet, underscored by a chemical taste. I would completely pass on both products in the future.
Tamale in a bag!
I'm no food critic, but this was delicious! It's billed as a breakfast meal, but I think it would easily pass for any meal. It really was just like eating a mashed up tamale in a bag. Really delicious, and one would never know it was freeze dried. At 490 calories (23g fat, 55g carbohydrates and 17g of protein), I wouldn't call it health food, but it's exactly what you want on a long backpacking trip. I had this for breakfast and went lift skiing all day. I skipped lunch and didn't get hungry until closer to suppertime. Mission accomplished! This meal is mild to moderately spicy, and may be too much if you are seriously spice averse. For the rest of us, it saves having to carry extra hot sauce to doctor it up. It really doesn't need it. This is will definitely be on my shopping list as long as they keep making it.
Super tasty, surprisingly crunchy
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I was a little suspicious about the deliciousness of chilaquiles in a freeze-dried meal. And then I was surprised by how tasty this one is. It was only 5 minutes to rehydrate, and maybe because it was a relatively short time, the tortilla strips were still pretty crispy and crunchy. Kinda salty, but I love that in backpacking meals. The spice rating is a 2 out of 3, but I don't think it warrants that spicy of a rating. It was rather mild. If you don't mind the weight of bringing hot sauce along, I'd recommend that. There's not a measurement line (that I could find at least) within the package, so you're on your own for what 1 cup of water is for rehydrating. My pot has measurements, so I was able to measure easily, but it's something to consider. If you add too much water, you might end up with soupy chilaquiles. I forgot to stir halfway, but it still turned out really good. Maybe that's why the chips were still crunchy? I love this packaging!! It's short meaning that my hands and spork aren't getting completely covered in food while I'm eating. Anyway, tasty, crunchy, very light, quick to prepare, I recommend.
Tasty Vegan Camp Meal
I used this for fueling the morning of a 10 hour gravel bike race. I enjoyed the taste and texture and it was easy to consume a large amount of calories with this meal. I like that it’s vegan and it was flavorful without being overbearing.
Just like home
I was shocked to see this product at REI and just had to try it. What a treat! This is probably the best freeze-dried meals I’ve ever had. I am so glad to see some variety in the meals department. Chilaquiles are my absolute favorite comfort food. I’m so glad I get to enjoy it in the outdoors.
So disappointing
I was really looking forward to these. The first bite hits you with spice and flavor, but after the third bite it ends up tasting like mushy, grainy flavor without being able to distinguish what you're eating. Like flavored, wet sawdust. My partner and I both couldn't finish it.
deconstructed enchiladas
I bought this for my first backpacking trip. I was worried about the spice level, and although I would prefer a little less spicy, it was tolerable. Had great flavor and texture-felt like I was eating a deconstructed enchilada. Egg flavor and texture was not there. I had this for dinner-Great experience for a first time eating a meal backpacking.
