I bought this pair of shoes at REI Boca PArk, Las Vegas. It was a treat, as I rarely spend over $100 on shoes, but the Saucony x REI made me think it was a smart buy. Within thirty days the fabric on the inner heals is gone (both shoes). The foam is almost gone at 45 days. I treated these proper: never wore them two days in a row, all jogging (limited as I'm focusing on incline walking) on a treadmill, and ALWAYS loosen the laces to the mid-foot before re moving (i.e., don't remove them by kicking them off unlaced). As a comparison, the other shoe I alternated with is a Nike sneaker designed for rain (not a performance running shoe) that I bought pre-COVID for a Dublin trip. 1000s of miles later it shoes only expected wear at the soles and moderate stitching fraying.
Been on somewhat of a Cinderella fool’s errand, looking for a shoe to replace an Italian leather hiking/trekking shoe for backpacking after they changed the design and production from Romania to Vietnam; same name but NOT the same shoe. I’m embarrassed to say how many shoes I’ve tried on, walking around the house, a couple of dog walks and hiking trails, trying to suss out how these would do on a 110+ mile trek with a light pack, lost in a paradigm only Goldilocks would understand. Extremely pleasantly surprised at the performance and comfort of these shoes. I didn’t want something with a huge stack height, Lazy Boy cushioning and a wide outer footbed; I wanted security, stability and agility for on and off trails scrambling, crossing scree fields and the like. Gotta say, I’m keeping this pair. Size: I typically wear a 10.5 and these are perfect with plenty of room in the toe box without being overly roomy and sloshy. Secure fit. Breathability: Previous shoes have been GoreTex and decided to do without given the areas I typically hike, and while they do pick up water quickly while walking thru wet grasses, they breath well and dry out pretty quickly. Elephant in the Room: The color/pattern design; it’s a lot to take on but I love them. The only downside is they dirty up pretty quickly which normally has never been a concern for a hiking shoe but given their stylishness, my OC kicks in on these. I’ll deal. Caveat: Your mileage may vary; these worked for me based upon my own needs and physiology but may not for you.
Tested these out on a quick overnight run. The hard plastic in the heel cup is way too rigid and gave me blisters on the back of both heels within 3 miles. The toe box is also very tight and destroyed my toes on the decline. 10 miles in and I’m bleeding in multiple spots on both feet. I’m a size 12 and these ran pretty small. No redeeming qualities from my experience.
I’m on my feet for 9.5 hours straight & these have been the comfortable & reliable.
