Used these poles for a 4 week PCT and 3 wk Tahoe Rim Trail hikes in 2024 and 2025. They held up well, though both carbide points broke off. While the site says they have replaceable tips, it doesn't seem like they do: I've pulled off the black plastic at the bottom and there's no place to screw in a new carbide tip (or unscrew an existing, broken one. Only the Mountainsmith website offers for sale, not REI. The grip is quite nice for my mid-sized hands. The poles were reliable, though I did find I needed to adjust the height a few times each day, especially after descents when I was putting a lot of weight on the poles and they shortened an inch or two. They're fine for the price, though I'm now thinking of upgrading.
I've used one of these poles for three years now. I mainly use it when I know I will be hiking on very steep or rocky trails, or I need to make one or more creek crossings that are more than a simple hop-over, so that having a third point of contact with the ground is helpful. I don't ever use a pair of poles at the same time so I liked that I could buy just one of these at a time. My pole has stood up well to moderate use. The grip and strap are comfortable enough, but I'm not using them continuously all day, so keep that in mind. The lever locking mechanism holds much better than the typical twist-to-tighten mechanism on inexpensive poles. I need to re-adjust the friction wheel pretty often to ensure a tight grip, but it's simple and only takes a moment. These poles are a good value if you don't require a pair of state-of-the-art carbon fiber poles. Mine does the job for me. I'd happily buy another if this one ever breaks.
Ok poles. Locking mechanisms are ok, but every now and then it loosens, poles condense, and you have to readjust. No measurement markings on bottom extensions. Very large while in smallest settings for packing. The grip box is a little small, pinching my pointer to pinky fingers to stay in the premold grip. The back of the grip has a ridge that is uncomfortable in my palm/thumb pad unless wearing gloves, which makes the front grip even more cramped. Previously reviewed told me about locking issues but for price I thought it wouldn’t be an issue…but grips are making me return, only went 100 yards before putting them back in the car at first try.
I compared this pole with others, and it had the features I wanted and cost less. I hiked with this pole recently on the Dingle Way in Ireland. GREAT trekking pole. The mechanism for adjusting length is easy to use and not once did the pole collapse. I have used other poles but this is my favorite so far.
Got this one after returning another model from the same manufacturer. I find the cork handle to fit my hand well, the top of the pole is also comfortable when holding it on top. The cam locks are quite secure and I've not experienced any slipping of the sections when under pressure. I didn't expect the pole would be such a high quality at this price. Highly recommend.
This trekking pole only worked for 2 hikes. When on the third hike, it collapsed! We tried resetting it and it kept collapsing. Very disappointed! I thought REI was a reputable place from which to buy this. And says not returnable now.
