I have spent 5 days using this jacket in winter/alpine ice climbing conditions. I find it to be a great, lightweight shell to carry for "if I need it." I would not suggest this as a "stand in the rain all day" layer, but it poured on me for 2 hours today and there were no leaks. It breathes as well as any waterproof jacket for high exertion, especially in a winter environment. I would also expect this to function well as a lightweight summer rain layer. On the downside, I doubt the underarm snap vents will be terribly useful for venting, but they did not self-vent in 40 mph winds. A good piece for lightweight alpine / winter climbing pursuits.
In reducing weight, they eliminated the drawcords on the rim. Bad idea. When I am moving fast, like on a boat or a skidoo, the hood billows and pulls off or diverts a lot of cold air benith the jacket. In addition, I suspect that the stretch material they opted for will loose its stretch over time. Bottom line, you can't get a secure fit of the hood. Also, be sure to get a size larger if your going to wear much under this. It is a slim fit, as the information states. Overall, I woudn't buy this again. They cut too many corners to reduce weight.
The design of this jacket is very well thought out. The size and cut is awesome, just the right length. The oversized hood shrinks down and fits snug on your head with a nice brim. The pit vents are perfectly placed which is awesome with the large front pocket/vents. It’s very lightweight and storable which is a bonus. It looks good, and if you read up on the tech in this jacket on the pertex website, it’s pretty cool
This jacket is lightweight, but it IS NOT waterproof. I wanted to like this jacket, but I had soak through in a little over an hour in light-moderate rain. Also, the armpit venting uses a single snap instead of a zippered closure, which I assume is to maintain constant passive breathability but not watertightness. This might make a nice windbreaker and keep you dry in very light mist or dry snow, but not in the rain.
This get up resembles the cult classic look from mean girls. 10/10
Very comfy lightweight jacket. Perfectly waterproof and the pockets make good vents. Used in moderate showers and as a wind breaker / shell in sub zero temperatures, no complaints. Seems to be quality and the fit / function is great. Kinda strange pit snap vents but whatever, not needed. This will be my goto for a pct through hike 2025 hopefully it holds up!
Nostalgia. I bought two down coats from M.H. decades ago. Unbelievable warmth, an outer shell that you can't destroy. AN embroidered Mountain Hardware logo. A skin you cannot puncture. I still have them. There has been nothing that even comes close. Never duplicated. How could you walk away from the great thick with down coat. JOhn
This jacket is very lightweight and the color is great! Completely waterproof during the times I have used it while on hikes or walking through the city. There are areas on the jacket that allow for a ton of breathability and that helps prevent overheating. Overall has become one of my favorite rain jackets now!
This is my dream alpine climbing jacket. The cut and fit is superb with excellent underarm lift and pockets that I can access with a harness on. The hood fits well over a helmet and the elastic trim allows the hood to move side to side with my head.
I gave this jacket as a gift to my son who is a helicopter pilot. He says it is absolutely perfect: lightweight, slim fit, breathable, water-repellent. He is 6’2. Size L.
