Ok for light use. Watch glued seams…

I have had this shell for about 5 years. Like many say, the DWR is enough for a 30 min shower, but wets through if you are in decent rain for longer than that. Wash it first to get that DWR working optimally. My issue is the seams made only of glue(no stitching) eg on the hood are now letting go. I will buy a fully stitched product in future, and for my Needs a truly waterproof material eg Goretex.

Thank you for your review. Based on the photos, it looks like this is an older version of our products; likely around the year 2017. Since then, we have gone away from fully welding our pieces and we now stitch and tape all of our products to prevent that from happening. We would recommend reaching out to our warranty team for assistance on this issue. Poor waterproof fabric

I used this jacket in a 4-day trek in Torres del Paine in Chile and got absolutely soaked in moderate rain. The fabric layer absorbs plenty of water and I had to get a plastic poncho instead. It was a very unpleasant experience unfortunately.

Great Hiking/ Backpacking jacket

Am in LOVE with this jacket! Just took at a 10 day tour mont blanc trip and it was perfect. Used for rainy days as well as a "wind breaker" on the high passes. Comfortable, light and with just a bit of stretch to make it feel barely there.

Needs a zipper upgrade.

I love this jacket and use it 4-seasons, but I bought it in 2023 and today is the second time the zipper has broken. Upgrade the zipper for 5 stars comfort, packability, waterproofing.

favorite rain jacket

THE most comfortable rain jacket I've had. Basically a soft shell jacket with a waterproof membrane. Build quality is top-notch, and the face fabric is soft and stretchy unlike any rain jacket I've tried. So far no durability problem after two full year of regular use. I've gone through hikes where I had to go off trail through some serious spiky bushes which I thought was gonna destroy the jacket. Checking the jacket after the hike I was unable to find any significant wear. If maintaining and properly washing the jacket one in a while, the jacket also seems to be sufficiently waterproof for most drizzles, but does seem to be more prone to wetting out than other more hardshell-like rain jackets. However, It’s worth noting that wetting out doesn’t mean leaking, and moisture level is probably already too high in pouring weather. Get this jacket if you plan on wearing it regularly as a wind-rain shell/soft shell on hikes rather than a dedicated severe weather hard shell.

zipper sucks.

Mountain hardware really skimped on the zipper. Because of that, it’s extremely overpriced. I had the older model with the plastic zipper last about 9months before the zipper broke and then another 6 months before the repair became unrepairable. The newer version I spent a lot more to replace it with feels cheaper in every way. The material is thinner and the zippers are the same size as ones you might find on a pillowcase - they’re absurdly small. You want to find a brand that’s resisting the race to the bottom, mountain hardware is not.

Bad DWR?

Jacket seems all good except the DWR on mine doesn’t seem to work. I sprinkled a little water on it, and the water only beaded up for a few minutes. Then it started to saturate the outer fabric. Per the mfr recommendation to ’activate’ the DWR, I washed it with double rinse and dried it on low heat. Outer fabric still saturates quickly. Other jackets like Patagonia Torrentshell do not saturate for long time with the same test. Do I have a defective jacket, or is the DWR really that bad on these jackets?

If you can only afford one rain shell...

If you can only afford one rain shell, this is it! Lightweight, breathable, comfortable, AND waterproof! I wore this during the steady deluge of a Pineapple Express rain event for over an hour and remained dry and comfortable. All of the zippers (main, armpit, pocket) have been trouble-free. Keep in mind this jacket lacks a two-way zipper and an internal pocket, but despite these shortcomings I find it to be an excellent value!

Great Jacket

Great lightweight jacket, I find the waterproofing works quite well. I've spent full days out in the rain and yes my base layer will get a bit damp underneath but as long as you're wearing wool/fleece under this jacket you'll be fine. I work outdoors in the PNW forests 4 seasons of the year and wear this jacket most days. It works great. The zipper is a bit lousy though I busted an end stop off mine and had to repair it.

Not waterproof at all

I expected better from this jacket. Used it backpacking on Vancouver Island this week and it soaked through in a half hour of meaningful rain. By the time I had the tent set up all of my clothing underneath was dripping wet. Despite being listed as waterproof the material absorbs water rather than repelling it. Either this particular jacket is defective or mountain hardwear doesn’t take their reputation seriously anymore.
