OK, kind of basic for the price

Ful disclosure I bought this because it's the only one at my price and capacity points that fits my freakishly long torso. It's great for that! I'm a woman and the shoulder and sternum straps are well placed for me. The main things wrong is that the hip strap is narrow (3/4") and the hip strap pockets are tiny, too small for sunglasses or a wallet let alone a smartphone. Side pockets can be reached if your shoulders are flexible, they're open and made of light mesh. Reachable storage is good but I'd have liked solid closable pockets here. (Why not just fix the zip direction on last year's model??) The fabric and zippers are overall lightweight, back panel a simple flat board of aerated foam. The main back padding is the hydration bladder, located between this board and the main compartment. A good location for load balance and it's nice that it doesn't eat into the main compartment, but it's not very comfortable when the bladder is full, I'd say effective capacity is 2L rather than 2.5. Bladder/tubing/valve, not the fanciest but it's nice that they're included, and you'll definitely want to let this setup outgas for quite a while before using it. No load lifters, no rain cover. Overall it'll do what I need. Tbh for the price I'd have liked just a little more -- there's not quite anything here that I can point to and say I love.

One major design flaw
PNW Explorer
I really wanted to like this pack. I got it primarily for a three-week hiking tour out of the country and was happy that the dimensions of the pack allowed it to be used as my carry-on for my flight. I also liked that the hip belt wasn't just thin straps and that it had hip pockets for snacks. Unlike other packs with hip pockets, these hip pockets didn't make the belt bulky, so I was able to lay the pack down flat and the hip belt didn't get in the way or stick up from the pack. Unfortunately, there is a major design flaw that had me frustrated with the pack several times during my trip. The lid unzips front to back, which was not the problems and was actually nice because I was able to keep the pack on my back while my wife opened the pack to get things out for me and the lid didn't hit the back of my head. Whenever I opened the main compartment, the lid flapped over and hung off the back of the pack. Again, that was fine, but on that lid are two small compartments. One is a meshed zip pocket to hold small incidentals; the other is just an open pocket under that mesh pocket. That open pocket is the problem and the design flaw. While the idea of that open pocket seems good as an easily accessible pocket to drop things in, the reality is that those things then easily fall out and drop into the main compartment when the lid is zipped back up. That's because everything turns upside-down once you zip up that lid. There's no closure mechanism (zipper, velcro, buttons) in that drop pocket and, therefore, gravity and movement takes over and things drop out. It's a frustrating thing to deal with, but if you're aware of that flaw, most everything else about this pack is great.

Great day pack

Well made pack perfect for day hikes. The only reason I gave it a four is because it does not have any torso adjustability, but what do you expect for the price? I have a ridiculously long torso of 24 inches but if you do not have the dimensions of an orangutan, it will probably fit just fine. It still works for me, but the sternum strap is kind of at my collarbone. I especially like the hidden pocket for valuables at the top.

Very comfortable and nice features

Might be a little early to be providing a review having only used this daypack one time but I feel good about it. I'm 60 yrs old, 5-11 and 190 lbs. I also have an Osprey Stratus but wanted something a little softer (less structured) and easier to travel with on planes, so I opted for the Skarab. It's very comfortable and has plenty of room for day hiking and as a plane bag. Very easy access to the stuff you want to get to quickly but big enough that you can bring plenty of day hiking gear (hammock, food, first aid, extra clothing, rain jacket, binoculars, etc.) and not have to carry a larger pack. Comes with a 2.5L bladder, which was plenty of water for me on a full day in the Appalachians. It's a well-made pack with great features. I will recommend this daypack to my hiking buddies. I wish someone could tell me what the double loop on the outside lower right corner is for.

Don't over look this pack. Will surprise you!!

such an amazing pack. I stopped on a motorcycle trip to Moab and picked this up on whim because I needed a pack. It's now my go to pack. so versatile, compresses tight with very little to nothing in it but expands when you grab way more then you expected at the grocery store. Quality that i've come to expect out of an Osprey pack. Bonus...my wife who's smaller than me can use it with just as much comfort as I do.

Outstanding... except for one minor flaw

This is a great pack that you are able to fill with just about anything for 1.5-2 days worth of hiking. The 2.5 liter reservoir is perfect to keep those kidneys flowing in any weather. It has deep lateral pockets for quick access and two smaller (one zippered) in the hip belt for snacks, pocket knife, etc. Inside there are 2 hood pockets that also can hold important items for faster access. The shoulder, chest and hip straps are all completely adjustable for great weight distribution and snug fit. There are not straps or hooks for external equipment (ie sleeping bag, mat, tent, etc) However, I have one minor complaint: The chest strap is magnetized which is a brilliant idea and works quite well, however, it is designed to also hold the water reservoir tubing and the magnet isn't quite up to the job to handle the stiff tubing or to hold it securely with deep breathing leaving your tubing flapping aimlessly in front of you. Yeah, I'd buy another but devise a way to hold my tube more securely. Happy hiking!

Great pack for what we

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great pack for what we need. The bladder works great and holds plenty of water for day hikes. Appreciate some of the features like the magnetic clip for the front strap and hose retention. Size was enough to haul what we needed but small enough to remind me we should pack light. Main compartment kept things pretty dry in rainy condition, though we did invest in a dry sac that worked as advertised. Only drawback so far is the main compartment zipper and flap is a little awkward or just different from other packs I’ve worn. All in all very happy customer!
