Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Sizing was true to other Altras I’ve purchased. My last pair of Lone Peak Hikers ran smaller than their size indicated, thus I returned them to REI and got these Timps instead. I like the fit and the thicker soles, just not wild about the “sand” color, they will no doubt show dirt pretty quickly! Got the unlined model, as my experience with the waterproof lining is my feet can breathe as well and get too hot .
Toe box on these is 100% fantastic. Too bad the upper lace hooks/grommets dig into your inside ankle bone due to not enough padding or the way they are designed. I've worn them 4 times now and it's excruciating. It's not a breaking them in thing. I've never experienced this with any mid/high top shoe or boot. I've loved every pair of Altras I've purchased and never had any issues. These are my first boot style Altras. If this is how they all fit or are designed I will have to find a new company for boot style hikers with a decent toe box.
I've been wearing Lone Peaks for a long time, and the Timp is even a step up from those other early models. Though I've had surgery on both feet and can't wear a lot of other hikers, these are comfortable in all aspects. Lightweight, not too hot, good toe room, great look, quick to dry. They seem sturdy so far. Two small complaints - wish the tongue was gusseted to keep debris out, and would like a swatch of heel velcro for gaiters. But those are minor issues. I will be buying a second pair to keep on the shelf until next year or whenever these wear out. Highly recommend.
Spent the week in Zion. Timp hikers were very good. We put on over 50 miles of hiking and I have no complaints. I could use a bit more cushion for my feet, but happy with the purchase.
All purpose shoe for me, use for hiking along with every day use, very durable & very comfortable.
An Altra rep at an outdoor festival told me this shoe was in the works the summer of 2023. I was looking forward to it. I have used numerous Altra shoes, including timps, Olympus, and lone peaks. Ordered this. When I tried it on, I immediately noticed it was not a good fit. Slightly bigger than my typical size with Altra. Heel cup was big, and heel was loose in it. When I cinched up laces to stabilize heel, something in the boot punched a nerve in my ankle. It was excruciating to take a few steps. Loosen the laces slightly, heel movement was very pronounced. Laces were short. The grommet placing for upper lacing was extremely poor. I did buy the low top version, off eBay, and it’s better. I was very disappointed in this shoe. Altra quality is declining.
I've been wearing Lone Peaks for years and recently switched to the Timp for the added cushioning and Vibram soles. Despite the switch, I still feel close to the ground in these, and the soles grip very well on wet surfaces. I recently climbed the gnarly terrain of Grandfather Mountain State Park (NC) during a heavy downpour and felt secure the entire time. They are very comfortable, with no foot fatigue. Two negatives: The laces were too short so I bought new ones and I'd prefer more color choices.
Bought these as soon as they came out for a busy summer. My first adventure was a Grand Canyon Rim-2-Rim hike in July. 24+ miles in one day. These were fantastic. Perfect in the extreme heat and dried relatively quickly after a few stream crossings. I then wore these on a 24 hour (42 mile) hike through the mountains of north Georgia. Very hot and humid, and again no issues with discomfort or blisters. Even after wading through several streams. I have over 100 miles in these and my feet were not a factor and I never thought about my shoes.
I think Altra has finally "nailed it" with this hiker. I have been wearing various Alta lone peaks for years and most (not all) of them were pretty good. Now that I am getting older my feet need a little more cushioning when hiking .These Timp hikers are the perfect answer. I only have about 20 miles on these but I have found the toe box to be roomy, the heel secure ,extra padding welcome and the new sole quite good. Time will tell about durability. positive- The sole is noticeably grippier than the lone peaks...I think it is a good improvement overall. Fit and cushioning. Secure fit with roomy toe box. neutral- Feel is still there but slightly less than Lone Peaks. negative- No gator trap and loop. Why not put this on the hikers Altra !? ...I miss it!
This hiking shoe is so smooth. The weight of the shoe is so light which is exactly what I need with ankle issues. I went half a step up because I wear ankle braces that fit comfortably inside the shoe. I usually wear an 11 in Altra but got 11.5 to accommodate the ankle supports. The high top hides most of my ankle support which is nice. I highly recommend this shoe for those that are challenged physically by their feet with some mobility issues. For me it means I can enjoy more pain-fee hikes and walks around the city/country.
