I was looking for a barefoot style, lightweight, waterproof mid boot and these fit all my requirements on paper, so I decided to get them. I have Altra Torin 8 running shoes and I really like the feel of their barefoot style shoes so I was excited to try these. I've put a few miles on them now, and so far they are great. They fit nice, I didn't get any hot spots on my feet, and the signature Altra toebox design was very comfortable for my feet. The trails I did were not extremely technical, but there was a lot of mud, wet leaves, slippery rock, and loose gravel, and nothing seemed to phase these boots. I was surprised by how grippy they were. My feet stayed dry the whole time, though I never tried fully submerging them in water. Since the boots are pretty lightweight, I would recommend good wool boot socks to keep your feet warm. The ankle support is a bit stiff, so if you're not used to mid rise boots, the socks will help pad that area. I didn't have any discomfort even after a 6 hour hike with some merino wool socks. These boots have the Altra EGO Max midsole, which is provides a good cushion for long hikes. They are still zero drop barefoot style shoes, so if you're not used to wearing shoes like that, I would not jump right into these. That being said, these boots might be the best barefoot style 4 season boot out there. Makes sense that they are an REI exclusive!
For having been rocking a competitor brand that's very cushioned, I've been experimenting and wanted to give these a try. I'm not hip on the zero drop or whatever chatter. I'm very basic and oblivious to the jargon. I let me feet tell me if they like a shoe or not. I've already taken these puppies on some monster trails and I don't feel pain or discomfort after being on my feet for so long. From a mean 15 miler with 4k in gains at Great Basin to a 10 miler with 3k gains around Mt Charleston. These shoes still look fresh and are keeping me happy! I'll keep putting them to the test, but so far so good
Recently bought this product on a whim for a yosemite trip. Boots held up very well and my feet stayed dry even in snow. I sized up .5 like i do with my altra running shoes and these fit perfect even with thick wool socks.
The most comfortable boots I’ve ever taken backpacking. First time wearing these boots was the first time my feet weren’t even a little sore after a long hike. Have been backpacking for over 20 years and have owned great boots in the past, but these are my new favorites. If your going through a lot of water or snow I would maybe want something more rugged like the renegade or a danner boot, but these worked great for the creek crossings I had to do and walking through the marsh lands near the lakes, feet didn’t get wet at all. Overall, for the price I give these boots 5 stars just for the comfort alone. Seen some complaints about discomfort around the ankle, I didn’t experience that, however I wear pretty thick wool socks on my hikes so maybe that helped.
I did not like the fit very much for the first few miles, but after adjusting the laces I’ve found that they’re great. Lightweight, comfortable, and waterproof (have only dealt with mild wet conditions so far). No complaints after ~50miles (4-8 per day) of CO mountains.
Out of all my high top Altra shoes this is the most lightweight of them all. I have to send the left shoe off to have a lift built onto the bottom, which usually makes it very heavy. It added weight to it, but it is still really lightweight in comparison. Always very warm and durable, just wish you would make this exact shoe with a taller top for better ankle support. I had a stroke and could use a little more ankle support. All in all a 5 star ranking from me!
I’ve been hiking in Altras (shoes and mids) for many years. Why, Altra? Why do these have strange uncomfortable stiffness around the ankles? To echo other people’s reviews for other iterations: did anyone try these??
Got these for the rainy season and my feet got wet! didnt even step in a puddle. It was just from the rain falling on my shoes.
I wanted to love these shoes so badly, but the area around my ankle bones was painfully firm. There is excellent padding higher up on the cuff of the shoe, but around the ankle bone is just Goretex that is quite rigid. I love the lower section of the shoe and it is as comfy as my Timp 5. If your feet work with these, they are awesome.
